The Elizabeth River Project is a nonprofit organization based in Norfolk, VA that was founded in 1991 with the goal of restoring the Elizabeth River watershed. Over the past 30 years, ERP has led numerous restoration projects including wetland restoration, sediment cleanups, and public outreach programs. Their current major projects include continuing sediment remediation, promoting sustainable practices among homeowners and businesses through their River Star programs, and restoring oyster habitats. Looking ahead, their 2025 goals are to increase environmental protections and restoration efforts throughout the watershed. Continued funding remains a key challenge to support their long-term restoration plans.

This program is led by ecologists within the Fairfax County Stormwater Planning Division. Some added benefits include, an outdoor classroom greenspace, enhancement of school ground aesthetics, and increased biodiversity.

Comparison of Pelletized and Agricultural Lime for Effect on Soil pH and For...
This study compared the effectiveness of pelletized lime and agricultural lime applied to bermuda grass pastures in Baxter County, Arkansas. The pelletized lime was applied at rates of 500 and 1000 lbs/acre, while the agricultural lime was applied at rates from 0 to 6000 lbs/acre. Soil samples taken 6, 12, and 24 months after application showed that pelletized lime at the lower rates was not as effective at raising soil pH as agricultural lime applied at 2000, 4000, or 6000 lbs/acre. There were no statistically significant differences in dry matter yield between any of the treatments.

It serves as an educational demonstration site, teaching organic gardening techniques and healthy eating. Several restaurants in Asheville have achieved 3-star and 2-star certification through sustainable practices like installing solar thermal systems to preheat water, implementing water conservation measures, educating staff on energy efficiency, and performing lighting retrofits. This green restaurant initiative was presented at the WNC Culinary Expo on April 16, 2012.

Monitor indicators of genetic diversity from space using Earth Observation data
Genetic diversity within and among populations is essential for species persistence. While targets and indicators for genetic diversity are captured in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, assessing genetic diversity across many species at national and regional scales remains challenging. Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) need accessible tools for reliable and efficient monitoring at relevant scales. Here, we describe how Earth Observation satellites (EO) make essential contributions to enable, accelerate, and improve genetic diversity monitoring and preservation. Specifically, we introduce a workflow integrating EO into existing genetic diversity monitoring strategies and present a set of examples where EO data is or can be integrated to improve assessment, monitoring, and conservation. We describe how available EO data can be integrated in innovative ways to support calculation of the genetic diversity indicators of the GBF monitoring framework and to inform management and monitoring decisions, especially in areas with limited research infrastructure or access. We also describe novel, integrative approaches to improve the indicators that can be implemented with the coming generation of EO data, and new capabilities that will provide unprecedented detail to characterize the changes to Earth’s surface and their implications for biodiversity, on a global scale.

Water polluted by dyestuffs compounds is a global threat to health and the environment; accordingly, we prepared a green novel sorbent chemical and Physical system from an algae, chitosan and chitosan nanoparticle and impregnated with algae with chitosan nanocomposite for the sorption of Malachite green dye from water. The algae with chitosan nanocomposite by a simple method and used as a recyclable and effective adsorbent for the removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solutions. Algae, chitosan, chitosan nanoparticle and algae with chitosan nanocomposite were characterized using different physicochemical methods. The functional groups and chemical compounds found in algae, chitosan, chitosan algae, chitosan nanoparticle, and chitosan nanoparticle with algae were identified using FTIR, SEM, and TGADTA/DTG techniques. The optimal adsorption conditions, different dosages, pH and Temperature the amount of algae with chitosan nanocomposite were determined. At optimized conditions and the batch equilibrium studies more than 99% of the dye was removed. The adsorption process data matched well kinetics showed that the reaction order for dye varied with pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of the algae with chitosan nanocomposite toward malachite green dye reached as high as 15.5mg/g, respectively. Finally, multiple times reusing of algae with chitosan nanocomposite and removing dye from a real wastewater has made it a promising and attractive option for further practical applications.

The incorporation of a 3DCSM and completion of HRSC provided a tool for enhanced, data-driven, decisions to support a change in remediation closure strategies. Currently, an approved pilot study has been obtained to shut-down the remediation systems (ISCO, P&T) and conduct a hydraulic study under non-pumping conditions. A separate micro-biological bench scale treatability study was competed that yielded positive results for an emerging innovative technology. As a result, a field pilot study has commenced with results expected in nine-twelve months. With the results of the hydraulic study, field pilot studies and an updated risk assessment leading site monitoring optimization cost lifecycle savings upwards of $15MM towards an alternatively evolved best available technology remediation closure strategy.

History of Organization (ERP, 2020) ● November 1991 – First conversation around a kitchen table ● May 1993 – Incorporated ● June 21, 1996 – 1st Watershed Action Plan, developed by consensus of community, announced by CBS’ Charles Kuralt ● 1997 – 1st wetland restoration - Birdsong Wetland ● 1997 – River Stars Program for industries launched ● 2002 – 2nd Watershed Action Plan ● 2008 – 3rd Action Plan ● 2009 – The first goo goes! Money Point Phase I & II cleanups completed ● 2009 – Learning Barge christened to teach all ages how to restore the Elizabeth. More than 30,000 have come aboard ● 2011 – River Star Homes Introduced ● 2013 – 36 million lbs of "goo" gone. Twenty-five species of fish return; fish cancer drops 6 fold. ● NOW – Over 5,000 River Star Homes commit to 7 practices to protect the river ● NOW - More than 50 wetland restorations by ERP and partners ● NOW - 180 River Star Schools ● NOW - 131 River Star Businesses have achieved more than 1,787 acres of wildlife habitat restored or conserved and 331 million pounds of pollution voluntarily reduced. Over one billion pounds of other materials have been recycled, reduced, or reused. - cumulative results since 1997
- 3. Overview of Current Activities Major Projects: ● The Goo must Go A restored marshland at Money Point. The restored wetland is intended to help remove contaminated sediments. Since the project’s start, over 26 species of fish have returned to the marsh. ● River Star Homes This pubic outreach program is designed to help homeowners in the Elizabeth River Watershed learn how take steps to protect the river. Once the steps are taken, a homeowner can sign up to be a River Star Home, and receive a flag for their yard to show pride that they are doing their part. ● Eastern Branch Restoration This campaign is the Elizabeth River Project’s aim at gaining citizen involvement to help restore the health of the most polluted section of Liz. “...we’re placing 1,000 tons of concrete covered by 300 tons of oyster shell to recreate oyster habitat.” (ERP, 2017)

Future Plans and Challenges ● The 2025 goals: ○ 1,000 new River Star Homes ○ a region wide plan adopted ○ Sustainable redevelopment of East Downtown ○ Increase in vegetated wetlands ○ 40% tree canopy throughout watershed. Source: elizabethriver.org ● Funding is a key challenge: The Elizabeth River project’s 10-year plan is funded in part by a capacity- building grant from Chesapeake Bay Funders Network, an Innovative Nutrient and Sediment Reduction grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and generous donors to the Elizabeth River Project. Funding for the suture project of building living shorelines will come from the VA Department of Environmental Quality’s living shoreline loan program. Funding for education will come from educators and their facilities reaching out to request state funding.
