Diversity of Thought – what is it and how do you implement it as a Diversity initiative
Learning objective: Discuss creating an environment of diverse thinkers and improving successful business strategies
Diversity is a resource to be accessed and utilized for superior performance and innovation in part because of “more-than-one-way- thinking” which results in innovation and creates an agile workforce. Access to diversity of thought is blocked unless organizations also create an environment of fairness, non-discrimination, respect, trust and where employees feel that their voices matters. The social justice side of the diversity conversation is directly linked to the performance side, without it, Diversity of Thought is a human resource withheld. Diversity of thought allows for differing perspectives on ideas and unique insights into problems, it creates opportunities for innovation and partnerships in unexpected places where ideas will develop into newer and more forward-thinking ideas that can be implemented as successful business strategies.
At the end of this seminar, participants will be able to:
a. Identify Diversity of Thought and it’s evolution
b. Understand the challenges to creating a culture that Embraces Diversity of Thought
c. Implement and measure Diversity of Thought
d. Explore the Four Point Sequence and the Predictive model framework
Without an active innovation culture, organizations fall into stagnation and lose to more innovative competitors. You know this all too well if you work for a corporate business that strives to compete with the likes of Tesla, Airbnb, or Uber. Every industry has startups like these, and they’re on a roll. The services and products they provide are not too different from those you offer — but why do they outperform established corporations?
Innovation culture has long been one of the most challenging, and oft-discussed, topics in our conversations with business and innovation leaders.
Given the extraordinary importance of innovation for businesses, and society in general, and the fact that culture has been shown to be one of the biggest barriers for innovation performance, it’s not much of a surprise.
Because most large companies we talk to want to create a more innovative company culture, we thought we’d create this extensive guide to help understand what really makes a culture innovative, as well as how to actually shape an existing culture towards innovation.

If you want an innovative organization, you have to
be committed to a diverse workforce that
encourages debate and differences – BUT – it has
to be managed.
12. Organizational – Where are you on the continuum?

Innovation at this stage occurs on an “as needed” basis,
typically during annual planning or when a crisis emerges.

Introduction
There exists some standardized process for idea generation in
the organization, but at this stage it is not always directly
connected to or functioning as a driver of strategy – and not
always measured/evaluated by formal means.

Cultural
Adaptation
The organization has a culture that embraces innovation.
Ideas are connected and driven by strategy; employees are engaged
and have avenues to participate; there’s an ongoing pipeline of new
products and services in development; there’s a system in place to
encourage, recognize, and reward new ideas.
17. Need to balance playing to win with playing
not to lose factions in the organization.
18. Success can be the enemy of innovation…
…because it can create cultures that are
unwilling to change.
19. The more radical the innovation and the more
it challenges the status quo, the more and the
stronger are the antibodies.
20. Managing the Process
Keep the common goal front and center
Share information in advance, create an agenda for action – and
make sure to get the question right
Create operating guidelines upfront and enforce them; discuss
cognitive differences
Depersonalize conflict by helping people understand cognitive differences.
People who do no understand cognitive preferences
tend to personalize conflict or avoid it – or both.
21. Asking a good question
•
Make it as specific as possible (retain and grow)
•
Have a singular focus for each brainstorm/ideation; don’t try to do too much
•
Have an objective for the question: How might we _____________, so that
__________.
•
Ask others for input to refine
•
Give all participants the question in advance (days, weeks) along with any
background information; clarify any questions and share with all participants
22. Let’s not forget our ABC’s
•
Selling your ideas – don’t overlook this step
- What’s the profile of your organization
- What is the risk tolerance of the person you need to support your idea
- The more $ the higher up
- Wrap it up with a bow
