This document discusses applying a cultural approach in teaching the short story "The Fruitcake Special". It defines culture and lists four fundamental principles of cultural studies: cross-cultural encounters and the creation of racial/cultural hierarchies, assimilation of dominant cultures, resistance to dominant cultures, and cross-cultural identities. It suggests generation gaps affecting culture as a suitable issue to analyze, with activities for students to compare characters representing old and young generations and relate them to their own environments.
The Rise in Awareness Regarding Culturally Appropriating CostumesMaisie_Talbot
As advances in communication and technology blur the lines between nation, race, and geography, the concept of cultural appropriation has gained traction in a mainstream audience. Defined by Richard A. Rogers in a paper written for the Northern Arizona University as “the use of a culture’s symbols, artifacts, genres, rituals, or technologies by members of another culture,” cultural appropriation has led various ethnic groups to cry foul at instances they feel either stereotype or reduce their roots.
Museums are Places that are Quietly SubversiveWest Muse
Has your museum ever tried to engage audiences in controversial topics, moderate discussions about social movements, or introduce inclusive practices only to be stymied by your board or director? Does it feel impossible for your museum to be an advocate for social justice issues? This session is informed by the growing movement of museums and museum professionals working to dispel the myth of institutional neutrality or nonpartisanship, the reality of museum professionals who can’t overtly address controversial topics, and a belief that “museums are places that are quietly subversive.”

Stereotyping Gender in Children’s LiteratureQUESTJOURNAL
ABSTRACT: The persistent imbalance of gender representation in children’s literature has become an issue. The stereotypes and worldview embedded in children’s books have become accepted knowledge, and such deepseated socialized thinking has created barriers that prevent authors from implementing their egalitarian beliefs. This paper contends that a huge imbalance exist in the presentation of gender in children’s literature and therefore states that despite the positive attributes that typify children’s literature in Nigeria, the literature is gender biased. Gender stereotypes in children’s literature in Nigeria enhance gender inequality by imparting notions that privilege masculinity and downgrade femininity, gender bias exist in content, language, and pictures in a number of children’s literatures and reinforces the building and maintaining of biases towards the female genders. This paper analyses imbalance in gender relations in selected children’s books in Nigeria. The study found out that children’s literature in Nigeria is gender bias and displays imbalances in the representation of textual characters and as a result there exist the absence of dynamic and positive female characters in the literature produced for the younger ones.

African-American Children’s Picturebooks: Examining the Genres of Childhood, ...Angelina Bair, MLIS
By tracing a genre of resistance and cultural identity through African-American children’s picturebooks we can learn about the importance of how children understand themselves and their place within the community. Even during the current Golden Age of publishing, picturebooks still continue to lack African-American writers and illustrators. The question of why this is happening will be covered throughout this study by investigating statistical and scholarly sources. Also, the history of how African-Americans were portrayed in picturebooks through racist and stereotypical portrayals will be examined. Even today scholars continue to debate as to whether published works for children continue to contain racist depictions of Blacks. African-American children’s literature can be used as a tool to discuss how to reimagine racist stereotypes and be aware of the racist history within the stories marketed to children. The political benefit of teaching African-American picturebooks within community settings has key value for children of all races and backgrounds and provides role models that validate the importance of the Black experience in literature. Positive portrayals of African-Americans teach Black children the importance of diversity and prepare them for adulthood. By highlighting African-American children’s literature through, before or after school programs and camps, children will learn the importance of the Black cultural experience and understand the value of sharing and recognizing in the positive depictions of everyday Black life.

AbstrAct
One of the biggest challenges in
nursing education is to develop cul-
turally sensitive graduates. Although
theory and lecture are appropriate to
introduce cultural issues, the applica-
tion of those skills is limited by the
kinds of clinical experiences and pa-
tient populations students may treat.
Literary works are a rich source of
information for nursing. This assign-
ment was created to sensitize the
students to the influence of cultural
diversity. Students were assigned to
read one novel from an approved list
and answer the questions posed on
the Cultural Discovery worksheet.
The only direction that was given re-
garding novel selection was that the
novel had to represent a culture other
than the student’s own. The focus
was to expose students to a different
culture. Classroom discussion, based
on worksheet answers, followed. The
assignment’s good, bad, and ugly out-
comes are discussed. Suggestions for
adaptation of this assignment to an
online format are also provided.
T
he United States is home to
one of the most ethnically and
culturally heterogeneous popu-
lations in the world. There are more
than 150 ethnic groups (U.S. Census
Bureau, 2006) and 430 recognized
tribes of Native Americans in the
United States (Redish & Lewis, 2007),
all with their own diverse practices
and beliefs. Culture and ethnicity of-
ten determine the clients’ perception
of health and illness. This includes
kinds of acceptable treatment, type
of follow up permitted, and who will
make health care decisions. As a cul-
ture defines health and illness, it also
defines health care and treatment
practices. Cultural values determine,
in part, how patients will behave.
The provision of culturally compe-
tent care is a dynamic process that
requires individuals to be aware of
their own values and beliefs, as well
as understand how these affect their
responses to those from cultures dif-
ferent from their own. Leininger
(1991) defined culture as the learned,
shared, and transmitted values, be-
liefs, norms, and life practices of a
particular group that guide their
thinking, decisions, and actions in
patterned ways. Cultural competence
includes the attributes of caring, re-
spect, adaptation, honesty, appropri-
ate body language, and interest and
the ability to develop working rela-
tionships across lines of difference
(Galanti, 2004). This encompasses
self-awareness, cultural knowledge
about illness and health practices, in-
tercultural communication skills, and
behavioral flexibility (Strivastava,
2006). Even the concept of transcul-
tural nursing is relatively new in the
nursing literature. In fact, only in the
past 3 decades have nurses begun to
develop an appreciation for the need
to incorporate culturally appropriate
clinical approaches into the daily rou-
tine of client care (Giger & Davidhi-
zar, 1999). Educators strive to develop
students into sensitive practitioners,
and they are challenged .

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
