These questions are ever more urgent as human action changes the natural environment, while human labour is increasingly automated. What will become of us when robots achieve consciousness? The answers seem to depend much more on culture than on technology; and popular speculative fiction seems to be well ahead of formal scholarship in thinking them through. Using a cultural science framework, this presentation looks at how the problem of the human is imagined in two current hit TV series – Westworld (USA) and Humans (UK). What is at stake in their very different answers to the same troubling questions?

The Philosophy of Science
Past civilisations have nurtured small populations of those trying to understand and manipulate nature to some advantage in materials, tools, weapons, food, and wealth. However, they never formed communities and lacked the means of recording, communicating, and sharing successes and failures. They also lacked a common framework/philosophy to qualify them as scientists, but that all began to change in the 16th Century. In this lecture we consider the progression to a philosophy of science, and the underlying principles and assumptions that now guide scientific inquiry.We also examines the nature of scientific knowledge, the methods of acquisition, evolution, and significance over past centuries, and reflect on the value to society.
In the struggle to solve problems, deliver understanding, and reveal the truth about our universe, science had to suffer and survive: ignorance, bigotry, established superstitions, and the ‘diktats’ of religions and politics, and latterly, falling education standards mired by social media. We chart that ‘scientific’ journey emphasising the importance of observation, experimentation, and the search for universal laws. Ultimately, this essentially Aristotelian perspective was challenged and overtaken by the rise of empiricism, which emphasised the importance of sensory experience and the limitations of human knowledge.
Science continues to evolve and provide us with the best truths attainable with our leading edge technologies of observation and experimentation. Today, it stands as the greatest and richest contributor to human knowledge, understanding, progress, and wellbeing. In turn, debates and controversies are ongoing, shaping the field and philosophy which remains essential for understanding the nature of scientific knowledge and the models it creates. But unlike any belief system, the answers and models furnishers by science are not certain and invariant, they tend to be stochastic and incomplete - ‘the best we can do’ at a given time.

The study aimed to demonstrate that high and low life satisfaction results from how people differentially use information about their life domains. 201 online participants rated their life satisfaction and satisfaction across 12 domains like relationships, health, and job. For life satisfaction ratings, participants described their thoughts. Responses were coded for domain mentions. Those highly satisfied mentioned best domains, while less satisfied mentioned worst domains, supporting the idea that judgments are shaped by selectively using positive or negative information. The findings suggest a cognitive mechanism influencing life evaluations.

The Philosophy of Science
Past civilisations have nurtured small populations of those trying to understand and manipulate nature to some advantage in materials, tools, weapons, food, and wealth. However, they never formed communities and lacked the means of recording, communicating, and sharing successes and failures. They also lacked a common framework/philosophy to qualify them as scientists, but that all began to change in the 16th Century. In this lecture we consider the progression to a philosophy of science, and the underlying principles and assumptions that now guide scientific inquiry.We also examines the nature of scientific knowledge, the methods of acquisition, evolution, and significance over past centuries, and reflect on the value to society.
In the struggle to solve problems, deliver understanding, and reveal the truth about our universe, science had to suffer and survive: ignorance, bigotry, established superstitions, and the ‘diktats’ of religions and politics, and latterly, falling education standards mired by social media. We chart that ‘scientific’ journey emphasising the importance of observation, experimentation, and the search for universal laws. Ultimately, this essentially Aristotelian perspective was challenged and overtaken by the rise of empiricism, which emphasised the importance of sensory experience and the limitations of human knowledge.
Science continues to evolve and provide us with the best truths attainable with our leading edge technologies of observation and experimentation. Today, it stands as the greatest and richest contributor to human knowledge, understanding, progress, and wellbeing. In turn, debates and controversies are ongoing, shaping the field and philosophy which remains essential for understanding the nature of scientific knowledge and the models it creates. But unlike any belief system, the answers and models furnishers by science are not certain and invariant, they tend to be stochastic and incomplete - ‘the best we can do’ at a given time.

The study aimed to demonstrate that high and low life satisfaction results from how people differentially use information about their life domains. 201 online participants rated their life satisfaction and satisfaction across 12 domains like relationships, health, and job. For life satisfaction ratings, participants described their thoughts. Responses were coded for domain mentions. Those highly satisfied mentioned best domains, while less satisfied mentioned worst domains, supporting the idea that judgments are shaped by selectively using positive or negative information. The findings suggest a cognitive mechanism influencing life evaluations.

This document summarizes a study on lessons in happiness taught to secondary school students in the Netherlands. It provided an overview of the study which randomly assigned 15 classes (381 students) to receive 6 lessons on happiness over 50 minutes each, while a control group of 10 classes (250 students) received the usual mentor classes. Questionnaires were given before and after to measure happiness and health, and grade point averages were compared before and after. The results showed that students who received the happiness lessons had higher GPAs at the end of the school year compared to the control group.

Positive organizational psychology is the scientific study of positive subjective experiences and traits in the workplace that improve organizational effectiveness and quality of life. A review of 315 peer-reviewed articles published between 2001-2013 on positive organizational psychology identified key topics like positive leadership, psychological capital, job satisfaction, well-being, and engagement. Positive leadership was found to enhance performance, organizational citizenship behaviors, commitment, and satisfaction through promoting positive organizational behaviors. Psychological capital characterized by self-efficacy, optimism, hope, and resilience led to improved performance, satisfaction, commitment, engagement, and lower absenteeism and stress. Future research opportunities include more empirical studies across diverse contexts and the application of evidence-based practices.

The researchers hypothesized that relational cognition would moderate the links between components of high-quality connections (emotion-carrying capacity, tensility, openness) and outcomes (positive regard, mutuality, vitality). An online survey of 401 employees found that emotional experiences were strongly related to vitality. Women reported fewer questioning thoughts about relationships and a larger decrease in vitality from such thoughts, compared to men. Psychological safety in teams is important; team members must feel safe and able to communicate and collaborate effectively to deliver value. It’s also necessary to build long-lasting teams since things will happen and relationships will be strained.
But, how safe is a team? How can we determine if there are any factors that make the team unsafe or have an impact on the team’s culture?
In this mini-workshop, we’ll play games for psychological safety and team culture utilizing a deck of coaching cards, The Psychological Safety Cards. We will learn how to use gamification to gain a better understanding of what’s going on in teams. Individuals share what they have learned from working in teams, what has impacted the team’s safety and culture, and what has led to positive change.
Different game formats will be played in groups in parallel. Examples are an ice-breaker to get people talking about psychological safety, a constellation where people take positions about aspects of psychological safety in their team or organization, and collaborative card games where people work together to create an environment that fosters psychological safety.

We can combine our innate empathy with our analytical skills to gain a deeper understanding of complex situations at work. Join this session to learn how to prepare for difficult conversations and how to improve our agile conversations in order to be more influential without power. We will use Dave Gray’s Empathy Mapping, Argyris’ Ladder of Inference and The Four Rs from Agile Conversations (Squirrel and Fredrick).
In the session you will experience how preparing and reflecting on your conversation can help you be more influential at work. You will learn how to communicate more effectively with the people needed to achieve positive change. You will leave with a self-revised version of a difficult conversation and a practical model to use when you get back to work.
