2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

5. Introduction
Crusell Bridge Data: Background
• The Crusell Bridge becomes the most prominent bridge in Finland to be
designed and built using BIM (Building Information Model)
• The design is solicited by the owner in a design competition announced in the
winter of 2001
Picture: http://bit.ly/tbIVKG 4/22
6. Introduction
Crusell Bridge Data: Background
• The competition aimed to find a quality bridge solution that would bring out
the characteristics of the area and take into account the requirements of the
landscape
• Although a British design firm win the competition, the project is awarded to
the second place winner: WSP Finland

8. Introduction
Crusell Bridge Data: The Use of BIM
• This case study focuses on the
construction stage of the project,
highlighting two aspects:
1. The extensive use made of the BIM:
- For fabrication of steel girders and
concrete reinforcement
- For monitoring and management of
the supply chain of fabricated
components
- For formwork and temporary support
structure design
- For quality control using laser
scanning, and
- For construction planning using 4D
animation;
2. The ways in which BIM supported lean
construction practices, such as its support
of production management onsite using
the Last Planner System™.

9. BIM Learning Experience
A Building Model Supports a Wide Variety of Information, Uses of BIM in the Construction Stage
• The Crusell Bridge project becomes a BIM learning process for everybody
involved, even for those who had previous experience using BIM, because
many new solutions and techniques were tried
• For the client (City of Helsinki’s public works department), it was first
bridge project using comprehensive BIM, including time and management
dimensions
Picture: http://bit.ly/uHuzoU 8/22
10. BIM Learning Experience
A Building Model Supports a Wide Variety of Information, Uses of BIM in the Construction Stage
• For the designer (WSP Finland) that had
modeled simpler reinforced concrete
bridges previously; this bridge with its
curved geometry, cable-stays, and
composite structural steel and reinforced
concrete structure, is significantly more
complex than what they had experienced
previously
• For the contractor (Skanska) this project as
well was the first bridge modeling, using
Tekla Structures and made a strategic
decision to use a model in the construction
stage as much as possible, including 4D
planning and modeling temporary
structures
• Due to the pioneering nature of the use of
BIM on a highly sophisticated bridge, the
main BIM software provider to the
project, Tekla Corporation, is also involved

12. Interoperability
Information Exchange through File Transfer
Picture: http://bit.ly/t3zjlw 11/22
13. Model Synchronization
Synchronization Procedures
• Synchronization required not only a technological solution but also a
management protocol, agreed to by all parties, that stated who was
allowed to edit what and when
Picture: http://bit.ly/t3zjlw 12/ 2
14. BIM Use in the Construction Phase
Visualization
• The Crusell Bridge is not an extremely large project, but has an interesting
design and makes excellent use of BIM for a number of construction
purposes
• The 3D model of the project helps different parties to better understand
the concept and especially the details of the design, forming a common
mental picture and understanding far more quickly and effectively than
with traditional drawings
Picture: BIM HandBook 13/22
15. BIM Use in the Construction Phase
Design and Planning of Temporary Structures
• The site team decided to thoroughly model all the missing temporary
structures, including formwork shoring towers and the site tower crane on
its tracks, directly in the design building model maintained onsite
• This provided a better understanding of the structures, enabled
identification of numerous collisions (clashes), extraction of accurate
quantities, incorporation of these works into construction schedules, and
visualization of their sequencing during 4D planning
Picture: http://bit.ly/t3zjlw 14/ 2
16. BIM Use in the Construction Phase
Clash Detection
• Clash detection was done not only at the end of the design phase between
steel and concrete parts, but also in the construction phase, incorporating
additional systems and the temporary structures and formwork
• Many clashes in the bridge structure that might only have arisen during
construction were prevented
• This BIM functionality save a large amount of money and prevent many
problems
Example of a clash detected between a cable anchor and formwork ties and its resolution
Picture: BIM HandBook 15/22
17. BIM Use in the Construction Phase
Construction Planning and 4D
• The 4D video animations of the schedule were done at the resolution of a
single day
• Thus the team could generate daily visualizations of the project, which
enabled assessment whether the decisions made during the reverse phase
scheduling stage of the Last Planner System™ (LPS) meetings were realistic
in terms of their use of space
• The animations also gave everybody a better understanding of which works
they were agreeing to execute
Picture: BIM HandBook 16/22
18. BIM Use in the Construction Phase
Fabrication and Installation of Structural Steel Components
• Ruukki reviewed and edited the components in the model as needed to suit
their fabrication constraints, and then sent the updated model back to the
structural designers at WSP and to Skanska for approval
• WSP then edited the structural steel components in its own
model, incorporating Ruukki’s comments, and updated the server model
for all other participants
Picture: http://bit.ly/uOHVKL 17/22
19. BIM Use in the Construction Phase
Rebar Detailing, Fabrication, and Installation
• Modeling the bridge
reinforcement turn out to
be more difficult than
was anticipated
• Bridges of this type
(cable stayed) have a
high density of
reinforcement and
complex deck and
abutment shapes, which
makes the modeling more
difficult and time
consuming than for
simpler structures
• Tekla Structures provides
rebar material takeoffs in
ASCII, EXCEL, and other
file formats
Picture: BIM HandBook 18/22
20. BIM Use in the Construction Phase
Laser Scanning
• Skanska employ a surveyor onsite whose task was mainly to control the
quality of the work and to assist the trade contractors with positioning
• Skanska purchase a machine named Trimble® VX™ Spatial Station for use
onsite to capture coordinates, take images, and combine them
Picture: BIM HandBook 19/22
21. BIM Use in the Construction Phase
BIM Suport for Last Planner System™
• Skanska had used the Last Planner System™ (LPS) in their projects for three
years before the Crusell Bridge project, and have their own specialists who
train site crews to use it
• LPS has two main focuses:
1. Reliable short-term planning,
2. Creation and development of a social system onsite.
Picture: http://bit.ly/tGhb4E & http://bit.ly/t7v8wM 20/22
22. BIM Lessons Learned
A Building Model Supports a Wide Variety of Information, Uses of BIM in the Construction Stage
• Plan using BIM and LPS from the very beginning of the project
• Use the model to complement construction management techniques
• Use the model synchronization feature to achieve fast information exchanges
• Model temporary structures gives a better understanding
• Import laser scanning point clouds into the model to check locations and work
quality is highly effective
• Use the model for visualization during LPS planning meeting to improve
understanding of the product and the process
• Involve project partners from outside the site as well as site teams
• Ensure participants are commit to upgrade their software tools simultaneously
Source: BIM HandBook 21/22
23. Summary
A Building Model Supports a Wide Variety of Information, Uses of BIM in the Construction Stage
• The case clearly illustrates how BIM can be used in a bridge project
• The teams’ willingness and openness to using BIM and new management
methods (LPS) gave all of the parties the opportunity to experience and
learn from their own failures as well as from their successes
