ARIA is a W3C specification that can be used to dramatically improve the accessibility of custom widgets, especially for users of screen readers. This talk provides practical tips and design patterns for using ARIA to create accessible user interfaces that work across all of the various combinations of browsers and screen readers that support ARIA. Additionally, this talk will focus on the tools and methodologies developers need to test ARIA in order to ensure the best possible user experience.
Building configurable applications for the websupertom
Today's web application needs to be many things: fast, intuitive, always available. In addition, today's web app needs to be something else: highly configurable. In this session, we'll discuss strategies in building your application so that it can be tuned in real time, minimizing downtime. Also discussed is configuration management, a necessity in deploying apps to multiple environments.

"APIs: the Glue of Cloud Computing"
CloudExpo Europe Keynote - June 22, 2010
The second day of the CloudExpo Europe that was taking place in Prague the 21st and 22nd of June, Steven Willmott, the CEO of 3scale, made a presentation on APIs and their importance for Cloud Computing.
The key highlights of this presentation are:
1. Cloud Computing pushes to the “hyper integration” of the Web and the enabling of key platform to emerge (e.g. the new SkypeKit)…. But not only for computing power
2. Cloud Computing and its different elements fit into an MVC “Cloud Edition” framework thanks to APIs
3. APIs enable Cloud Scale MVC
4. You need to become indispensable in the Value Chain otherwise someone may eat your lunch
5. APIs are key to become indispensable but need to be managed
This presentation compares Flex versus HTML 5 in terms of features that compose a typical RIA (rich internet application).
This talk given at Ignite Sydney 2009, where every talk was 20 slides, 5 minutes, 15 seconds each slide. These slides have been annotated with the narration from the talk. Check Youtube soon for the actual video.

SD Forum Java SIG - Service Oriented UI ArchitectureJeff Haynie
Presentation given by Jeff Haynie at the SD Forum Java SIG in Palo Alto, CA on 12/02/2008. Service Oriented UI Architecture in the world of web, desktop and mobile applications. How the web has gone beyond the browser and we’re headed back to Client/Server.
This session takes a deeper look at the AJAX paradigm by discussing key development patterns. It demonstrates implementing them using a combination of out-of-the-box features and as well as features built by leveraging the extensibility of the platform. Patterns covered range from fundamentals such as networking, search optimization, navigation, and unobtrusive script attachment to user interface usability techniques such as visual notifications, and customization. The demonstrations are illustrated in the context of a simple scenario, but are designed to be applied directly to real-world applications.

Yahoo widgets are written in blueprint, a new xforms based language that allows you to write your mobile app once and get the best possible experience in any device.
According to jqtouch.com, jQTouch is a “jQuery plugin for mobile Web development on the iPhone, Android, iPod Touch, and other forward-thinking devices.” Web apps can easily be created using jQTouch, and they resemble native apps. jQTouch includes native WebKit animations, automatic navigation, extensions for geo-location and offline capabilities, and themes built specifically for mobile WebKit browsers like the above-mentioned mobile devices. In this session, Chad Mairn will explain the differences between native and Web apps, highlight some free and useful web development tools, and will then demonstrate how to install and customize jQTouch in order to help kick start your library’s mobile Web presence.
A storm is brewing in the world of mobile applications, with the current model of OS-specific application platforms challenged by a new generation of webapps and widgets using HTML 5 and Device APIs that can work across a far wider range of devices (and not just phones either).
This makes deploying mobile apps in education far simpler and cheaper than the current model of building one-app-per-device in different programming languages; it also makes it possible to develop applications simultaneously for web applications, mobile and desktop. Rather than make a mobile app for your VLE, you can make your VLE out of mobile apps!
Scott Wilson looks at how the standards work, who is adopting them, what you need to do to get started.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex ProofsAlex Pruden
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).
