2. Why did poet choose this poem?
• Her solitary nature found peace in the
imaginative realm of gardens, flowers and
natural landscape.
• However, her life long fascination with
death and morbidity forced her to write
such verses.
3. What does she want to explain in the poem?
• Emily views nature as an imminent danger to life as she
describes what happens during and after a storm.
• After the havoc and destruction caused by the storm, Dickinson
also portraits that a heavenly being saved her father’s house.
• In depth, she makes us realize that life is full of surprises and
difficulties. These troubles comes in a row, one after the other.
• But we should be hopeful as we will always be looked after by
God.

4. What is structure and form of poem?
• Structure : The original version of the poem was in one
stanza but its edited version was divided into five stanzas of
four lines. The extensive use of unconventional
capitalization of alphabets and her way of comparing and
contrasting abstract ideas with concrete images is
unmatchable. Dickinson avoided pentameter.
• Form: This is a pastoral poem and a free verse poem.

Meter: The meter of our poem is lambic tetrameter alternating with lambic trimeter every other line.
Capitalization: It occurs at the beginning of every line.

In the first stanza he refers to the storm.
In the second stanza themselves refers to the leaves.
In the fifth stanza my refers to the Emily Dickson or whoever is in the poem.
Symbolism:
This entire poem is supposed to symbolize a storm.
In the first stanza a menace is also supposed to symbolize the storm and strong winds.
Personification: It has one big personification such as 'The dust scooped it self like hands'.

things to themselves to hide from the storm.

• The poem talks about failure and achieving a goal.
• In this poem the darkness surrounding a man represents a place where
he could go if he fails.
• The light however and following the path of light would bring the person
to his goal and success.
• The poem convey an idea that failure is bad and sucks. But when a
person wins or achieve the goal that he has set for himself.
• He will be full of happiness and this sudden feel of success is
overwhelming.
