  2. 2. Emily Dickinson nearly wrote 1,800 poems throughout her life.Because she had no interest in publishing her poems, none of herpoems were discovered and published until after her death onMay 15, 1886.
  3. 3. THERE WERE FEWERTHAN TWENTY POEMSTHAT EMILY DICKINSONTITLED. ONLY THELETTERS AND POEMSTHAT SHE SENT TOFRIENDS AND FAMILYWERE TITLED. THE RESTOF HER POEMS THATBECAME PUBLISHEDAFTER HER DEATH WERENUMBERED. DICKINSONIDENTIFIED HER POEMSBY THE NUMBERS INWHICH THEY WERECREATED OR BY THEFIRST LINES OF HERPOEMS.
  4. 4. Emily Dickinson, unlike other poets in herera, wrote with a peculiar style. She useddashes to indicate pauses in her poems, shecapitalized random letters and herpunctuation was odd; all of which werewidely criticized because her poemsviolated the conventional laws of poetrywriting.
  5. 5. She was known for using the common meterin her poems. The common meter is a line ofeight syllables followed by a line of sixsyllables, repeating in quatrains of an8/6/8/6 pattern. A popular Christian songthat uses the common meter is “amazinggrace.”
  6. 6. Emily Dickinson followed the rhythm of the hymn in her poems. A hymn is areligious song or poem, typically of praise to God or a god. Two famouscomposers, Barber and Copland, were able to use her poems in their musicbecause of her use of the hymn.

HER POEMS “i cannot live with you” anD “wilD nights” ARE THE MOST POPULAR IN REGARDS TO LOVE. DEATH AND IMMORALITY WAS THE ULTIMATE EXPERIENCE FOR DICKINSON. HER MOST POPULAR POEMS IN RELATION TO DEATH ARE: “Because i coulD not stop For Death” AND “i hearD a Fly Buzz when i DieD”
