2. Introduction
• Road safety is a topical issue in Nigeria, due to
the increasing rate of road crashes in the country.
• The most populous black nation in the world is
faced with the challenge of road traffic fatalities
which is a growing public health challenge in the
country.
• Designs of roads in the country rarely take into
cognisance the infrastructural needs of the
Vulnerable Road Users (VRU).
3. Introduction
• The road traffic fatality rate for the country is put
at 33.7 deaths per 100 000 population per year
accounting for the highest in Sub-Sahara Africa.
• An appreciable increase is recorded in Road
Traffic Crashes (RTC) in the country with the
attendant morbidity and mortality between 2006
to 2013.
• Reasons articulated by the Federal Road Safety
Commission (FRSC) include Human factors,
Mechanical factors and Environmental factors.
4. The Federal Road Safety
Commission (FRSC) has set a
maximum speed limits, acceptable
blood alcohol concentration, the
use of helmets by two wheeler
operators and the seat belt laws.
5.
6. • Proximity of all road users poses a great treat
and makes it easy for accidents to occur
7. Conclusion
• Road traffic crashes is a growing public health
challenge in the country.
• That the health benefits that accrues from active
transportation (cycling and walking) still remains
elusive in the country as a result of the road
design.
• That the current design of roads in the country
which allows all road users compete for the
available limited road space, in no small measure
contributes to the mortality and morbidity
recorded in the city.
