Freight is payment for transporting goods by ship. There are different types of freight depending on how payment is calculated. Methods of freight pricing depend on cargo type, transport mode, weight, distance and other factors. Shipping services can be charter (tramp) or liner. Charter involves renting a ship for a specific voyage, while liner uses scheduled services along fixed routes. Types of charter include voyage, time, demise and contract of affreightment. Split incentives between ship owners and charterers can reduce energy efficiency.
Chartering involves reserving a ship or transportation for others' use. Charterers employ shipbrokers to find ships to deliver cargo for an agreed freight rate. Shipbroking involves brokering between shipowners and charterers. Shipping agencies handle shipments and cargo on behalf of shipping companies, ensuring supplies and documentation are arranged. Key terms in chartering include charter parties recording rate, duration and terms; types of charters depending on cargo ownership; and delivery points affecting hire start times.
This document provides an overview of maritime practitioners and chartering markets. It discusses that shipping demand is derived from trade. The dry cargo market relies on a range of vessels for trades like iron ore, coal, grain and timber. Commonly used dry cargo charter parties are Baltime and NYPE, which favor shipowners and charterers, respectively. Time charters and voyage charters are described. Time charters require the owner to provide a ship and crew, while the charterer is responsible for cargo operations. Voyage charters cover a single voyage. The tanker market has separate crude oil and petroleum products trades. Crude oil trades are impacted by Middle East politics while product trades transport refined oils. Chemical carriers require clean
This document provides information about sea transport and the types of ships used. It discusses bulk carriers, container ships, gas carriers, chemical carriers, roll-on/roll-off ships and passenger ships. Cargo securing involves properly loading, handling, stowing, carrying, and discharging goods. Motions at sea can cause cargo to shift, so it must be secured against pitching, rolling, yawing, swaying, heaving, surging, and other ship movements. Common securing methods include lashing, anti-skid mats, structural alterations, filling, air bags, and following cargo securing manuals and guidelines.
This document discusses different types of cruise ships. It describes older, classic cruise ships as typically being built before 1970 with sleek designs for transatlantic voyages. Modern cruise ships are larger, accommodating thousands of passengers across many decks with amenities like numerous activity venues. Small expedition-style ships carry fewer than 200 passengers and emphasize education and adventure. River cruise ships allow passengers to explore rivers like the Rhine. Ferries in Europe provide overnight or multi-day cruise-like experiences between destinations.
A ship's tender is a boat or ship used to transport people and supplies between larger ships and shore. Tenders serve as the link between ships that are too large to dock and land. On cruise ships, lifeboat tenders double as regular tenders but are fully equipped to function as lifeboats in emergencies. Before modern technologies, warships and submarines relied heavily on tenders for maintenance and resupply support at sea.

Finally, it lists the 10 largest cruise ships in the world by passenger capacity, ranging from Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas carrying 5,400 passengers to Cunard's Queen Mary 2 carrying 3,873 passengers.
This document discusses various types of chartering agreements in the shipping industry. It covers voyage charters, time charters, time charter on trip basis (TCT), contracts of affreightment (COA), and bareboat charters. For each type, it describes the key characteristics, costs, forms used, and differences between them. Voyage charters are for a single voyage, time charters are for a set period of time, TCT is a time charter for a single voyage, COA provides transport capacity over multiple years, and bareboat charters amount to a lease of the entire ship.
Laytime is the agreed time for cargo operations like loading and discharging in ports. If laytime is exceeded, the charterer pays demurrage/damages to the owner. There are typically four stages to laytime calculations: commencement, duration, exceptions, and calculation of time used. Demurrage is usually specified as a daily rate in the charter party, and documents like NOR and statements of facts are used to calculate actual laytime. The charterer, bill of lading holder, parties to sales contracts or booking notes can potentially be liable for demurrage payments.

This document provides an overview of voyage estimating, which involves forecasting both costs and income for a proposed shipping voyage. Key aspects to consider include calculating cargo quantity based on deadweight capacity accounting for bunkers, stores and load line restrictions. Estimating time in port requires factoring loading/unloading rates, weekends/holidays, notice periods, and potential weather delays. Additional delays from bunkering or canal transits also need accounting. The goal is to produce an accurate skeleton estimate to evaluate a voyage's potential profitability.

Quality of the team
Special constructions, long trips, heavy work. Within Wagenborg Offshore it often comes
down to the quality of the team. ‘What is most important to us? Our people. When you
have to rely on each other during major projects at sea or somewhere in the desert, good
colleagues make the difference– not only outside working hours. During every job, like
the one in Norway, you need to be able to rely on each other. When I select a team,
personality is very important. New guys will gain experience automatically.’
The same applies to the other Wagenborg divisions – ‘A quick call to Wagenborg Nedlift
and the transport of the drilling rig towards the coast or over land is sorted. They don’t
need it spelled out.’
Respect for people is something really important to Bert as a supervisor, including when
he supervises new colleagues. ‘Wherever you are, you can always learn something from
someone else. We respect every culture and every language. That is when you have the
most meaningful contacts, and when you learn something from being away from home.
There is a vast desert around you with no one else only your colleagues. Where the
morning sky has such magnificent colours that you can face any job that day.’ Bert smiles...

For nearly a hundred years, Wagenborg ferries have transported millions of visitors to the

Services is certainly one of the best known divisions of Wagenborg. It has a history of wonderful
encounters, stormy passages, and above all dedicated people.

19. We’ll carry them, if we have to
For many years, Wagenborg Passenger Services has transported millions of tourists, day
visitors, and island residents to and from Schiermonnikoog and Ameland. Tiemen Boelens
has worked for this Wagenborg division since 1975. ‘We sail throughout the year – in the
summer we transport many tourists. In the winter we transport day visitors and collect large
equipment from the mainland for restauration projects on the islands. A lot has changed
over the years. Our ships have become bigger over time. These days we are even more
conscious of safety and use extra ships when demand is high. It is wonderful to see such
developments within the company.’
The born and bred Amelander has lived with the sea his entire life. ‘I’m a true sailor, quite
right. The Wadden, our home, has changed a lot over the years. You used to have mussel
beds that held the sand in place. These days the seabed is different and has a hard clay
layer with a sandy layer on top. That means the sand layer changes very rapidly and in
some places that has consequences for the permanent sailing routes – they change as well.

Tiemen Boelens lives with nature, but transporting people
is in his blood too. ‘These two things can conflict at times.
I remember an evening that was pretty wild at sea. We
sailed our normal service, a full ferry from Holwerd to
Ameland. That evening it was a spring tide, so high water
and strong winds. Despite the conditions we decided to
sail anyway. Well, the crossing went without difficulties,
but once we arrived in Ameland, the water was so high
we could not moor the ferry. Normally we would shore up
the ferry with ropes on the quay, and lay a gangway to
the pier to get people onshore. However, that particular
evening it was too wild to use that option. There was no
way we could moor in such a way so that our passengers
could disembark safely.’
