Coral reefs are large areas of plants and animals (choice B) that grow in shallow tropical waters. They contain invertebrates called polyps that have exoskeletons and grow slowly. Coral reefs are brightly colored due to algae living inside the polyps. They need sunlight for the algae to photosynthesize. Tropical fish live among the reefs for shelter and food. When water temperatures rise due to global warming, the algae leave the polyps, causing the reefs to lose their color and turn pale white in a process known as coral bleaching.
