About Our Presentation
The Young and the Techless: The Daytime Drama of the Digital Divide
Students deserve to have timely and engaging tools to access for success in the
classroom and in the ever-changing world in which they live. In order to be
successful and compete in our world, students must be proactive in their attempts
to find the best ways to gather and use knowledge. They also must promote
themselves as capable, driven individuals and have the ability to network with
others to stay competitive.

Equity
Equity is fair and just treatment of
everyone. It is also making sure there
are equal opportunities for every
person. We believe that equity is very
important, because every student
should be able to have the same
opportunities for their future. No
matter where kids go to school, where
they live, or any other factor, all
students should be able to have the
same enrichment.
7
An opportunity gap creates a strong
barrier between a child and the
education the child or young adult
deserves. Below are some of the big
factors that play into creating an
opportunity gap.
Big Factors Include
8
OPPORTUNITY GAP
Negatives:
➔No internet access
➔Difficulty learning
➔Not effective
➔Not entertaining
9
Positives:
➔ Collaboration
➔ Own Pace
➔ Help
Solution:

Self-Advocacy
When a child is a self-
advocate, that means he/she
knows their strengths and
weaknesses, and works for the
benefit and success of
himself/herself as an
individual. Self-advocates
know why they need to work
hard for their own success and
how to achieve their goals.
12
21st Century Skills
Communication: The ability to share thoughts and ideas with others
Collaboration: Working together to solve problems or fulfill new ideas
Critical Thinking: Discovering new ways to approach problems
Creativity: The ability to use imagination to work through challenges
CHOICE: Students have a voice in their curriculum design!

One-Tool Vs. Multi-Tool Classroom
It is key to note that these methods of
technology integration are adaptable, able
to be manipulated to fit the needs of a
diverse array of classroom types.No
matter if your classroom has one
computer or ten, integrating technology
into your room is still possible. Although it
is not always necessary, technology can
be a wonderful way to unlock creativity,
enhance attentiveness, and also promote
connecting with classmates.

teacher to monitor where the
student stands academically
through a series of online games
and quizzes.

Tech Versus No Tech
Educational technology has been the spark
for countless arguments regarding how
conducive tech can be to learning and if
tech does more harm than good. There is
strong evidence from either side. We are
not here to take a definitive stance, but to
advocate for the opportunity for students
and teachers alike to be exposed to
technology and get the same chance as
every other school in the country.

  4. FRY The Young and the Techless: The Daytime Drama of the Digital Divide Students deserve to have the right timely and engaging tools to access for their success in the classroom and in the ever-changing world in which they live. In order to be successful and compete in our world, students must be proactive in their attempts to find the best ways to gather and use knowledge. They also must promote themselves as capable, driven individuals and have the ability to network with others to stay competitive.
  5. Equity Self Advocacy The One-Tool or Multi-Tool Classroom Tech vs. No Tech Special Projects
  6. Blabberize--”Thank you for being here. Welcome to this Episode of the Young and the Techless.”
  7. “The Opportunity Gap” - Refers to the differences between a school's access to educational resources needed to be successful in different districts and communities. http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2015/03/26/is-improving-schools-all-about-money/a-lack-of-resources-for-many-classrooms -in this article a teacher describes her expieriences working in both high and low poverty schools, and that she understands it is not comletly up to schools to reverse poverty but money should be put towards low poverty schools to help improve education. Students come from all different backgrounds and should atleast be exposed to the technology out there Increased funding for high quality resources such as ipads or even more computers to help students At least one computer could make a difference in a classroom that has little to no technology
  8. Having two teachers gives students the option to choose how they want to learn. Flipped Teaching: Students watch videos made by their teachers at home and do homework and ask question during class. I had a teacher who did this and I really enjoyed it. It was great to have time in class to ask my teacher for help. The main problems with this is that some students don’t have access to technology at home or don't learn well with this method. This problem could be fixed by having one teacher do flip teaching and another, who teaches the same subject, teach traditionally. Students can choose the teaching style they prefer or that works for them when enrolling. Flip teaching positively affects students grades and how well they learn. http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-30814302 https://www.knewton.com/infographics/flipped-classroom/ Benefits of Flip teaching: http://alchemylearning.com/flipped-classroom-benefits/ https://www.panopto.com/blog/the-benefits-of-the-flipped-classroom/ http://www.ascd.org/publications/books/112060/chapters/Why-You-Should-Flip-Your-Classroom.aspx Students can work at their own pace. Have time to collaborate. Sick days don't interrupt learning. Classtime is for asking your teacher questions and getting help from classmates. Kids are used to technology (raised on it) Flip Teaching is Bad: http://neatoday.org/2013/03/29/what-flipped-classrooms-can-and-cant-do-for-education/ http://www.teachhub.com/pros-and-cons-flipped-classroom Not all kids have access to internet at home. Flip teaching relies on lectures and those aren't as effective as hands on learning. Not all students will watch the videos and engage in class. Videos aren't entertaining and don't interest students. Some teachers depend on students facial expressions to gauge their understanding of topics, flip teaching stops this.
  9. Showing educational videos to get a different perspective on the lesson Using this website the teacher can pull it up on a smartboard to have games and challenges for the students, some links can be a brain break and some can be for educational purposes http://www.exchange.smarttech.com/#tab=0 Another fun and engaging website that is a big hit with videos games and more is the magic school bus website http://www.exchange.smarttech.com/#tab=0

  11. http://goformative.com/student/#/assignments/ANWZ994 GoFormative is a new style of quizzing that allows students to be creative as well as learn or check for comprehension. The best use for this resource is for online classes or small quizzes in class. The teacher can view the questions and their answers in live time as they come in. Students with any type of learning disability should focus on how to recognize what their disability inhibits them from doing and how they can communicate this to their teachers and peers Teachers should help their students assess their learning style and their strengths and weaknesses in a stress-free way so they can understand how this affects their learning Students should track their growth in each subject area and be able to recognize when they need help with a concept There should be adequate parent-teacher-student communication Websites listed in slides Teacher creates assignment, student works on it, teacher watched student work through app, student can ask private questions Go formative is free quiz website. Class kick is free non pro version app or computer site Self-advocacy skills can be taught in schools http://www.ou.edu/education/centers-and-partnerships/zarrow/trasition-education-materials/me-lessons-for-teaching-self-awareness-and-self-advocacy.html Students with learning challenges must learn self-advocacy and can teach it to other students http://www.wrightslaw.com/blog/anthony-true-trains-other-students-with-dyslexia-to-self-advocate/ Students can learn self-advocacy in school and can practice their skills outside the classroom https://www.understood.org/en/friends-feelings/empowering-your-child/self-advocacy/ Example of self-advocacy http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2016/09/01/what-students-wish-their-teachers-knew/89709076/ How to help students understand how to self-advocate http://canlearnsociety.ca/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/LC_Self-Advocacy_N2.pdf
  12. Daily starters- everyday the teacher will use this website to get the class started and review what they learned the day before http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/daily-starter/teacher Scholastic news is a great way for students without the resources to learn about what is going on in the world and knowing important current events http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/daily-starter/teacher Teachers should incorporate technology in the classroom but kids without access at home should not be required to use technology because it is not fair to the kid without the resources. The teacher needs to accommodate every kid. To have kids using technology in classroom with only one computer the teacher will have a student every day navigate the computer using websites that incorporate the daily lesson plan. Another source is having a group of kids use the computer to make a crossword puzzle out of vocab terms they are learning then project it up to the class and have the class do it together. Brainpop is also a great resource for teachers to play interactive learning games as a class. https://jr.brainpop.com/ Brain Breaks are a great way for kids to get up moving and the navigator can search the website for the activity they would like to show the class. https://www.gonoodle.com/ I will present this by talking about teachers showing kids how to use computers and the great resources that are available online. This is why each kid will have a day using the computer and explain how teachers can use these in their daily lessons. Having one computer per classroom limits the resources available to students and teachers. http://eduscapes.com/tap/topic84.htm Fakebook creates a profile for fictional or historical characters http://www.classtools.net/FB/home-page Flip Quiz Review game for educators https://flipquiz.me/ Tumble Books Online and interactive books for kids of all grade levels http://tumblebooks.com/ Discovery Education Online games and textbooks to reference for class http://www.discoveryeducation.com/teachers/ According to PBS in 2011, only 22 percent of teachers say they have the appropriate degree of technology in their classrooms. However, 91 percent says they have access to a computer in the classroom. Here, we have resources that create an interactive learning experience for the whole class, despite only having one computer. Resources we found include Brainpop: a site with interactive videos and games, Scholastic Daily Starter: launches the day with short, engaging questions and facts, Flip Quiz: a create your own jeopardy game to review lessons, Tumble Books: a site with eBook and audio books, and Discovery Education: which provides online textbooks with interactive content. 13. LEADERSHIP: Leadership roles should be implemented into classrooms so students can teach their peers as well as teaching themselves. It helps teach self advocacy skills while also learning the material for the class. Technology is a great way to do that. For example, a student could create a digital presentation to share with the class. That being said, No matter whether there is only one classroom computer, or a classroom with laptops and tablets for every student, there are enough resources to find online that can be useful for either of those circumstances. I think the most beneficial use of technology is for the teacher to at least have a computer and a way to project things onto the front of the classroom. If students also have their own computers, then that is only an extra benefit, but it is not imperative. Times are changing, and if classrooms have access to some type of technology, they are more likely to learn the material of the class quicker and more efficiently. Even just a single classroom computer can make a huge difference and can be very beneficial. Resources such as google drive, student emails, and prezi should always be available because these sites require students to be independent and keep up with their assignments on their own. If a classroom has the privilege of keeping technology inside of it that can be accessed by any student while they are in class, then I think that it should be used, but if teachers are assigning lessons that require technology usage at home, then some students may not have access to it depending on the area that they are from. HOW THIS TIES TO EQUITY
  14. There are many ways to have a productive classroom using only one computer. Technology is a tool to help achieve success in the classroom but is not necessary for learning. One way to incorporate technology into the classroom using just one computer is to do stations around the classroom with the computer as just one station for students. This could be accomplished in small groups. Activities: http://www.educationworld.com/a_tech/tech/tech092.shtml http://teaching.monster.com/benefits/articles/3210-5-fun-internet-activities-for-the-classroom http://tumblebooks.com/ Tumble Books are animated books that read aloud. It offers a after read quiz to check for comprehension. http://www.educational-freeware.com/online/kerpoof.aspx Kerpoof allows students to make pictures, stories, and movies. http://childtopia.com/ Chidtopia offers over 1400 games in 5 langueages for math, observation, memory, creativity, language and skill. https://www.befunky.com/ Be Funky lets the user take a picure and make it into a cartoon that you could even add a comic strip too. It doesn’t matter if you have 1 computer or 12, you can still integrate technology into your classroom. If you are in a one computer classroom, you can utilize 15 to 20 minute stations with your students. Around the classroom you can have 4 stations, one being a computer station. Split your classroom up evenly and have everyone visit each station at least once. The computer should be located at a central location so you as the teacher can easily monitor, and provide assistance. You can use websites and apps like tumble books, kerpoof, and Chidtopia as examples of a computer station. If you are able to utilize these resources, then integrating technology into your room can be a breeze.

  20. STEM Lesson: We did this this spring semester virtually with Spring Hill via Skype and Manhattan-Ogden School district via double robot Double Robot: Basically an ipad on a robot that we can drive around the classroom as we wish via a computer on our side. We designed a lesson over oil spills and oil spill clean up using the 5th grade standards that we taught virtually We skyped with Dr. Shivers, Director of Elementary Education in the Manhattan-Ogden school district weekly to plan this lesson from the ground up We threw ideas at him and he threw some at us, but we designed the whole lesson on our own The students worked in groups to clean up a mock oil spill that they had to clean up with only 3 supplies.
