The Horizon Oil Rig Explosion
The 2010 Horizon Oil Rig Explosion
On April 20th, 2010 an explosion occurred that would be considered one of the worst oil spills in
U.S. history. The explosion was cause by a surge of natural gas that made it way to the Horizon
rig s platform that ignited. This caused the rig to capsize and sink, thus breaking risers that were
being use to counter act the large amount of pressure from oil and natural gasses (Pallardy,
2015). The explosion killed 11 workers and injured 17 others. The explosion caused a massibe leak
in the oil wellhead. It took 87 days for the wellhead to be closed and it is estimated that over that
time around 210 million gallons of oil leaked into the gulf (Gulf Oil Spill, 2011). BP workers tried
to activate a blowout prevent that was part of the Horizon rig s design. This mechanism was
supposed to close off any way to draw out oil bu the mechanism malfunctioned due to the
pressure form the gas and oil that cause the explosion (Pallardy, 2015). The explosion happened
a few miles from the Loop Current which is a large current of warm water in the Gulf that
covers a massive amount of distance making it easy from the oil to spread (Treudaburg Gramling,
2010). Over the next couple of months they tried a variety of different caps to try to stem the flow
of oil but they were generally unsuccessful and oil still leaked through. It wasn t until July that the
flow was finally stopped by a functional blowout preventer cap (Pallardy, 2015).

Essay On Rural Areas
Defining Rural Areas for Statistical Purposes
The vagaries around the rural concept must yield to an objective form in order to have consistent
measurement. Since this chapter draws primarily on data from the National Center for Education
Statistics (NCES), their definition of rural is consistent and convenient. Since 2006, NCES has
used the same urban centric locale definitions used by the US Census Bureau. Fittingly, under this
urban centric definition, rural areas include all those located outside of places the Census calls
urban.
The urban umbrella term includes three locales: cities, suburbs, and towns. Each of these is broken
into three subtypes: large, midsize, and small. City locales include territories within an urbanized ...

For this reason, this chapter uses the entire rural locale instead of rural sublevels. One wrinkle in
NCES s classification system is that while every school can be specifically accounted for as
belonging to one locale, school districts can include schools from different locale classifications.
For example, a district classified as suburban might include a number of individual schools that are
classified as rural. Despite the partial mismatch between the locale of some schools and the
districts they belong to, there are valuable reasons to compare school districts by their predominant
locale. For instance, districts, rather than schools, are the ones that often deal with issues like
transportation or providing opportunities for advanced course taking, which pose unique challenges
in rural areas. In order to compare districts by locale, the chapter uses NCES district
categorizations which assign a locale based on the predominant locale the district s schools.
Of course, this classification system groups together a large number of schools into each locale
category that are far from homogeneous. To illustrate differences between locales and across rural
areas, select data points are broken out by locale

Nursing Shortage and Nurse Turnover
Nursing shortage and Nurse Turnover
The ongoing instability evidenced from the high mobility of qualified nurses in the nursing
workforce has raised many questions about the issue of nursing shortage and nurse turnover (Gates
Jones, 2007). The paper below discusses the issues of nursing shortage and nurse turnover. The
paper also describes how leaders as well as managers in the nursing fraternity and other leaders can
resolve those problems effectively and the different applicable principles, skills, roles of the leader,
and theories of leadership and management.
There are various factors that are contributing to the current nursing shortage and turnover.
Apparently the major contributing factors in the USA are a population of nurses that are getting
older without adequate replacement, there are fewer than expected faculties dedicated to nursing,
there are more career fields opening up particularly for women hence the alternative choices instead
of nursing, federal government s failure to fund the nursing education across the country, generally
unpleasant working conditions and terms, poor retention of the nurses as well as an overstretched
hence overworked nursing staff. According to Paller (2012), the nursing shortage in different
countries for example the United States tends not to be the only growing problem, but has also
become a complex one. Nursing shortage and nurse s turnover has become the worsening
predicament in the health care industry in the United

The researcher will attempt to develop a working hypothesis to generalize about the situation of
using nature therapy to heal from sexualized trauma and how that is achieved. Sample size and
type This study will include up to 10 women. Other details about participants include: women or
people who identify as female (transsexual woman will be invited); women aged 18 75, with
preference of mean age of under 45, assuming that mobility and time in nature will be reduced as
women age. Sexual orientation will not be an issue however asexual women may not be
included as the researcher is interested in improving sexual health including a preference to
being sexually active at least at some time in the future. Women will be recruited within Calgary
or within a 50 km radius in order to facilitate a face to face interview. Ethnic preference is for 6
European, 1 aboriginal, 3 visible minorities such as Asian, black, or Arab to reflect the
population mix of Calgary. Their religious affiliation information will be collected but it will not
be used as part of the selection criteria. Women who are already known to the researcher on a
personal relationship level will be excluded to avoid a dual relationship, however acquaintances

Peripheral Vascular Disease
Background
Peripheral vascular disease is a disease that affects the peripheral circulatory system. PVD is
also referred to as peripheral arterial disease. PVD includes both the veins and the arteries. In
PVD there is a problem with blood flow due to a narrowing of blood vessels which is occurring
from a different pathology. The most common cause of PVD is atherosclerosis. Patients with PVD
can range from asymptomatic to severe and require amputations (Giorgi 2015).
Etiology
Peripheral vascular disease is divided into subcategories of functional and organic. Functional PVD
does not involve physical problems in the blood vessels. It causes incidental or short term
symptoms. These are usually spasms that occur erratically. Organic PVD involves changes in
blood vessel structure. This type of PVD causes inflammation, tissue damage, and blockages
(Giorgi 2015). The number one leading cause of peripheral vascular disease is atherosclerosis. This
is a gradual process in which a fatty material builds up inside the arteries (emedicinehealth 2015).
Other contributing factors to PVD include smoking, inactivity, diabetes, obesity, high blood
cholesterol, hypertension, emboli from another location, inflammation of blood vessels, injury to
blood vessels, and stress. (Giorgi 2015)

Crafty Research Paper
This is the story of a twelve year old girl named Craftmatsu Matsuno or Crafty for short. She
loved watching the birds fly across the sky. She loved floating peacefully down the river on her
homemade raft. But most of all, she loved eating sweets with her parents and her sextuplets
older brothers. Crafty was usually happy and peaceful. But even so, she sometimes felt lonely.
The Gods of the Galaxy took pity on Crafty. They each created three beings and confined them
within star candies. The star candies were made from each god s favorite constellations and were
tossed down into Crafty s world. The Gods of the Galaxy believed each being would teach
something to Crafty. It was up to Crafty to find them. It was a brand new day and Crafty was...

The Importance Of Conservation During The Progressive Era
Conservation was the most important reform, from this time period, since it worked towards
protecting the United State s physical environment which leads to obtaining the essential
resources of nature, preserving the naturality of the planet, and living a higher quality of life.
During the Progressive Era the Second Industrial Revolution was in action, sprouting new
technological advancements and ground breaking creations or processes. During this era, new
inventions were being made and big monopolies were increasing their use of natural resources to
a point where it was becoming harmful. One of the areas of resources that was becoming
alarmingly low was forests and lumber, leading to the Forest Reserve Act of 1891. This act,
which occurred during the conservation reform, allowed the president to choose forests of
interests and claim them as reserves, protecting them from being harmed or negatively affected
by big businesses. With the Forest Act many other acts protecting the Earth s resources sprung up
as well. All of the acts that were passed restricted important resources from being wasted and
blatantly used for company production areas. These acts, enlisted in terms of the government,
would allow the president to choose areas in which resources could always exist and couldn t be
overused. The areas chosen would include places with plentiful natural assets and a large range of
land. This early protection against the act of overharvesting, lead to people being able to

Peter Unger s Argument Against Skepticism Analysis
Critique against Unger s Argument for Skepticism
Do you ever wonder if you know anything? In his argument for skepticism, Peter Unger, states
that nobody ever knows anything to be so (Unger, Pg. 42). If this were to be true, can one be
certain that one knows things about oneself, the world one lives in, and about others? In fact,
through the use of different methods, one can indeed know things about oneself, the world one
lives in, and about others, which is why Peter Unger s argument for skepticism can t be true.
In order to understand Unger s argument and why it can t be true, one must first understand what
knowledge, skepticism, and Unger s argument and reasons for skepticism. According to the justified
true belief, knowledge is something ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Utilizing the five senses in order to know something about oneself, the world one lives in, and
others usually works, but our senses sometimes deceive us. For example, when light is refracted
in a certain way, our brain leads us to believe that the thing such as a pencil is bent. Once we take
the object out of the water, however, we can clearly see that it was not bent. Additionally, one can
never be absolutely certain that what one knows about others is true. For example, one might think
that they know the favorite color of another individual to be blue, but be wrong as the other
individuals favorite color is actually green. Even though one cannot always know with certainty if
one know things to be so, one can always know some things to be

Why The Rise And Fall Of The Byzantine Empire

Why The Rise and Fall of The Byzantine Empire
The Byzantine Empire, or the Eastern Roman Empire, was one of the largest the world has ever
seen and it remained so powerful for many reasons but like every empire, it would fall. In 330 A.D.,
The Roman Emperor Constantine I chose Byzantium to become the new Roman Capitol, he named
it Constantinople. The site of Byzantium was originally created to serve as a trade point between
Europe and Asia Minor but it was very helpful because of its strategic location along the Bosporus
strait. A key significance of Byzantium is in the citizens of Constantinople and the rest of the
Eastern Roman Empire who identified strongly as Romans and Christians for the first time ever.
The Byzantine Empire would be able to last so long because the ineffective leadership and
barbarian attacks that plagued the Western Roman Empire, did not really harm the Byzantine
Empire due the west being a screener for the barbarians and the East having very strong leadership
through this time. Through this time period, the Byzantine s were able to develop technology such
as Greek fire and the counterweight trebuchet. The Byzantine Empire was one of longest lasting
empires ever because of its leadership and technology over the years but it would fall because of its
inability to maintain defenses against the crusades.
The Byzantine Empire started and lasted because of the Roman Emperor Constantine.

The Controversial Success of Richard Wagner
Richard Wagner remains one the most respected and controversial figures in the world of opera
and filmmaking. He was a genius of his time and his work has stood the test of time despite the
negative image of the composer due to his racist leanings. Richard Wagnerwas born in Germany on
May 22, 1813, to become one of the most popular artists of that time for his epic operas . Though
he was written off by his teachers as weak in music, he wrote his first drama when he was 11 years
of age and wrote his first musical composition when he was 16 years old proving how ambitious he
was at a young age in his career. Wagner is known to have been a witty and fun loving person who

He was also impressed by Mozart s Requiem and therefore started his early piano sonata.
Although in his childhood he had been dismissed as being no good at the piano his works
proved that he was indeed talented. In 1831 he enrolled at the Leipzig University becoming a
member of the Saxon student fraternity and taught by Thomas Kantor Theodor Weinlig who was
so impressed that he refused to be paid by him. Wagner started composing his symphonies the
first being in C major. His inspiration came from Beethoven especially the Ninth Symphony and
in 1834 he became the Wurzburg theater chorus master. It is at this time that he met the love of
his life singer and actress Minna Planer in 1836. They had a marriage that was complicated by
deceit and betrayal as due to his lifestyle as a womanizer making his wife run away. Though they
reconciled later, they ended up divorcing after Wagner decided to marry

The elephants once roamed around the continents of Africa and Asia in abundance. Growing
numbers of human population, environment and climate change has played vital role in the loss of
their natural habitat resulting in the decline of elephant population. At the beginning of the 20th
century, there were few million African elephants and over 100,000 Asian elephants. Today, their
estimated numbers range from 450,000 to 700,000 for African elephants and 35,000 to 40,000 for
Asian elephants.
Like most animals, elephants also play significant role in the ecosystem. The elephants help
maintain suitable habitats for other species. They pull down trees, clear out heavy bushes, dig
waterholes and create openings in the dense forests. Several tree species rely entirely upon elephant
droppings for seed dispersal and germination. Elephants require larger habitats to maintain food
supply that has brought them in direct competition with human race for living space. The ever
increasing human population has pushed elephants into smaller areas, exposing them to human
contact and hindering their freedom to roam. When humans and elephants live close together, the
herds of elephants crossing can damage crops and villages. Such incidents lead to conflicts with
humans in which elephants constantly lose and are killed.

Frankenstein Midpoint Assessment

Glory is coveted by most and the pursuit of it can cause untold changes within an individual s
character. In spite of this, glory in whatever field possesses the threat of becoming an obsession.
Thus, the increasing extent to which one pursues their passion through their journey will shift it to
obsession and rid the subject of innocence often through violence. Both Victor Frankenstein and R.
Walton attempt to take on such a quest, however, Frankensteindisplays the adverse effects of such
an obsession.
The desire to create and discover is one endured by both Walton and Frankenstein; each realizing
that in attaining such glory, one must sacrifice their innocence. Walton expresses his need to
ВЁaccomplish some great purposeВЁ, citing that, to him, glory was more valuable than the
pecuniary advantage he already possesses (Shelley, p. 3). Despite his own thinking, Walton s
own search is truly one for self knowledge and wisdom, as his own soul is overcome with a
ВЁlove for the marvellous, a belief in the marvellousВЁ (Shelley, p.6). Thus, Walton is still
seeking to fulfill the peregrination his passion has set him on, hoping that he will find answers to
his own true purpose, under the disguise of glory (Foster, Chapter 1). Walton has yet to experience
a shift from passion to obsession, and thus, his innocence and naivety is still secured to his psyche.
He believes that this search will only bring him

The Northern Hemisphere
Eighteen Hundred and Froze to Death
In 1816, sections of the northern hemisphere experienced a year without a summer. The average
summer temperatures across the northeastern United States, Canadian Maritime Provinces and
much of Europe were colder than any other year in the previous 600 years, with the exception of the
summer of 1601. The estimated mean surface temperature anomaly for the northern hemisphere in
1816 is 0.51 K. In Europe, temperatures averaged 1 2 C cooler than was typical of the surrounding
years, and there was also an increase in precipitation. The most common explanation for this climate
anomaly is that it was caused by the 1815 eruption in Indonesia of Tambora, the largest known
eruption in history. The summer of 1816 also occurred during a period of reduced solar activity,
known as the Dalton Minimum, which may have contributed as well.

Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas Utilitarianism
Could one give a justification for making an innocent individual suffer just to preserve the
happiness of the greater good? In the story The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas by Ursula
Le Guin, the life of a young child is ignored and imprisoned in order to make others happy.
However, the situation in Omelas can be approached in one or two ways, including either the
deontological view or the utilitarianism view. The city of Omelas is portrayed to individuals as a
welcoming place that is full of festivals and happiness. However, this is not the case since a young
child is forced into imprisonment. Without the suffrage of the young child who is living in a
basement under a beautiful building in Omelas, where all the doors are locked, has no... Show more

Related to the city of Omelas, the ones that believe in utilitarianism would view Omelas as a
good society and see nothing wrong in the actions and results being made. Their belief is in the
system that happiness is the ultimate goal and the actions are not as important as the overall
happiness of the general public. There were no rules set that hindered what the citizens could do
to make a majority of them happy, so imprisoning the child was not a significant issue to them. So
rather than making everyone suffer a little, the child will suffer forever so the rest do not. While
it in itself may be horrible, they view it as a way which increases the utility of the people which
makes the actions morally worthy. Additionally, their perspective is that the people that leave
Omelas due to not agreeing with the situation is good as well. The reason for that is because they
are making the overall happiness level stay the same because the people that are unhappy are
leaving the city all together. The deontological view is better than the utilitarianism view because
utilitarianism just worries about the greater good enjoying happiness, no matter the circumstances
that an individual suffers. While deontology views the incident as that no one should suffer to
make everyone happier, and everyone should be able to enjoy happiness without suffrage. Because

Porphyria s Lover is a poem during England s Victorian society about an adoring husband with
hopes of equality for women. According to Masterplots II, The title can be very misleading
causing one to expect a perfect love relationship, perhaps two lovers in a cozy cottage retreating
from the storm described in the opening lines. However, the perceptions reported by the lover
soon alert the reader to his unbalanced perspective (Dickinson 3068). A major theme occurring
in Porphyria s Lover is love. The poem is about a women who having an affair which appeals to
some people in Victorian society. Madness is a theme Browning uses in two of his works. The
lover s love makes him go crazy. He decides that in order to control what Porphyria does is to kill
her. He knows she will not stay so he kills her. After killing her he shows no emotion. According to
Dickinson, A possible additional thread of meaning may be derived from the knowledge that the
poem was first published with another poem, Johannes Agricola in Meditation and that the two
poems were later grouped under the heading Madhouse Cells (Dickinson

Halakha, Jewish Religious Law And Religious Commandments
Halakha by definition is Jewish religious law, encompassing both civil and religious
commandments and prohibitions. The word Halakha stems from the root meaning to walk.
Halakha involves the study of law and customs in the Jewish religion. According to rabbinic law it
must be performed to sanctify all life and attain redemption. This idea when introduced was a
collection of rabbinic commentaries from the Hebrew bible or the torah. The importance of halakha
among Judaismand its trends, ideas, theories etc. is the fact that halakha is trying to integrate itself
into the world and not just strictly deal with Jews but integrate itself into the world of non Jews.

Responsa are the answers to questions Jews posed in the ancient days, the questions not
addressed by halakhic law but questions posed in everyday life. The importance of responsa in
Judaism is the fact that we have a physical database so to speak on questions about Judaism or
about practices, we have somewhere where the rabbis answered questions posed by the gaon and
Jews of the era and even though they won t correlate with some questions and situations we go
through today as modern Jews in America, the basic questions of Judaism and basic concerns
would be covered by the rabbis of the ancient times. The Talmud has many response within it, they
cover business ethics, ethics, customs, etc. The most posed questions and answers to the responsa
would be rules about ordinary incidents of life.

How To Be Successful In My Beloved World By Sonia Sotomayor
Sonia Sotomayor is a women full of many talents and accomplishments. In her book, My Beloved
World, Sonia reveals many people, circumstances, hardships, and successfulness. Sonia has
embraces many characteristics in which I can relate. Successfulness, determination, and the
importance of learning are all crucial elements that make Sonia into the inspiring woman she is
today. Relating to Sonia Sotomayorthroughout her book allowed me to remain intrigued in the
book and helped apply concepts to my everyday life. We as human beings all strive for success. We
use success as a measure of everyday life.
After a time you may recognize the proper measure of success is not how much you ve closed
the distance to some far off goal but the quality of what you ve done today (Sotomayor Preface).
Every person has their definition and view of success, but I believe Sonia Sotomayor stated a
quality point in how we self reflect on our lives. I believe finding success in the little things will
push me farther along my path toward my ultimate goals. I also believe we all admire someone
who we perceive to be successful. Throughout Sonia Sotomayor s book there ... Show more content

This team is responsible for 1) the proper routing of calls to call center representatives based on
their skill set referred to skill set gating and 2) managing the call center employees phone and off

structures, and computers prevents the proper support of the call center employees, which results in
missed commitments with telephonic customers.
Functioning Electrical System
The electrical system is managed by the public utilities company of the local area. If a tornado
sufficiently damaged this entity to prevent the consistent delivery of electricity to the call center,
there may be a disruption to the ability to make and receive calls as well as process data. The call
center employs backup power generators in such an instance, but these generators provide eight
hours of power. In natural disasters, it is not unlikely that utilities companies will be able to restore
service within weeks.
For each of the communications components listed above, State Farm should establish a call
routing process to handle inbound and outbound calls in exigent situations. Call routing simply
means that a national Intra Day Management Team, a team that manages the overall statistics
generated from all State Farm s call centers and that supersedes the authority of local intra day

Epistemology And Belief Of Epistemology Essay
In this paper I will be writing about knowledge and belief referring to epistemology. I will be
answering questions such as, What is knowledge and What is belief . I will also answer other
questions related to the epistemology of knowledge and beliefs. Before we get into knowledge and
beliefs, we must define what epistemologyis and why epistemology is important. What is
epistemology? The word itself derives from two Greek words: Episteme meaning knowledge
and understanding and Logia meaning science of study. In philosophy, epistemology is the
study of knowledge, in general. Examples of epistemological questions would be; what does
knowledge mean, how does a person get to know something, and what is the basis for true
knowledge. Epistemology has to do with how people s minds are connected to reality, whether
invalid or valid. What is the importance of epistemology? Epistemology explains our way of
thinking. Through the correct use of evaluation, epistemology is necessary to be able to separate
what is true and what is false. We couldn t think if not for epistemology. In other words, we
wouldn t have a reason to trust our thinking was valid. We would anything we see or hear to be
true. An inaccurate epistemology would lead us to not know how to separate truthand mistaken
truth. Obviously, there are consequences to inaccurate epistemology. The level that our
epistemology is accurate is the level in which we grasp to concept of reality, and the level in which
we use

Determinism In Jack London s To Build A Fire
An Analytic Jack London s story named To Build a Fire has many themes attached to it. Through
this story, the author attempts to convey messages regarding man s mental makeup and process.
The overall theme is one of a battle between naturalism and determinism and various themes linking
the two.
Determinism argues that man does not have free will but rather their circumstances are shaped by
their environmental or biological makeup (which is out of their control). In the story, the concept of
determinism is what provides context to the fact that life is amoral; the man defines any negative
outcomes as a lack of luck or an accident which gives credence to the fact that the story starts out as
deterministic in nature. The concept of determinism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The man, although highly adept at the management of tools and processes to start a fire, was
clearly devoid of instinct when the need for the anticipation of a hazard arose (which is a key
component of survival). The man also did not have the ability to translate the effects of the cold, to
the hazard it posed to him; routinely shrugging off the cold and disregarding the advice given by
the man from Sulphur Creek. On the other hand, the story portrayed the dog as having great instinct
in that even though it does not have the intellectual ability to understand the cold; it instinctively
bites the ice forming between its toes. It is possible to glean from the story that the man is actually
fighting against nature to survive, but the environment does not have any link to the struggles of
the man. It is not nature s determination to hurt the man; rather that nature is indifferent to its
inhabitants. The relentless force of nature causes the man in the story to change his goal after a
couple of accidents . Initially, he started off with the aim of reaching the camp, then it changed to
fighting against the frostbite, and ultimately the instincts kicked in and he merely wanted to stay

Usually, these remaining uncertainties can be accounted for by estimating and recording
allowances for anticipated returns and bad debts, thus allowing revenue and related costs to be
recognized at point of delivery. But occasionally, an abnormal degree of uncertainty causes point of

appropriate for installment sales and when a right of return exists.
Judgment Case 5 3
Mega should recognize revenue for the initial fee equally over the estimated average period
members will continue to be members. Even though the fee is nonrefundable, it is not earned until
services are provided. Since there is no contractual period of service, it must be estimated. Mega
would be justified in recognizing only $3 of the initial fee immediately to offset the cost of the
membership card. The payment option chosen by members does not affect the revenue recognition
policy.
The monthly fee should be recognized as revenue upon billing, as long as adequate provision is
made for possible uncollectible amounts.
Judgment Case 5 4
The revenue recognition policy is questionable. The liberal trade in policy causes gross profit to be
overstated on the original sale and understated on the trade in sale. This results from the granting

SOLUTION EVALUATION
Excel s solver function was used to walk through all meaningful values for the resource constraint,
yielding a satisficing prioritized project schedule. The decrease in the objective function looks
approximately exponential, typical of a Pareto distribution. The formulation of the problem allows
low direct cost stations to be prioritized in the case that they lower the cost of adjacent stations. The
full prioritized schedule is shown in Table 2. These results show that improvements at
Islington, Coxwell, College, Sherbourne, Runnymede, and Rosedale would have indirect benefits
that make improvements more valuable than present day contributions to the objective function
suggest. Conversely, while those indirect benefits result in other improvements having lower than
expected utility. The stations affected are Royal York, Woodbine, Wellesley, High Park,
Greenwood, Castle
Frank, and Summerhill. Some of these stations are still high priority, such as Royal
York, but improvements will be less effective than expected based on ridership.
When comparing the plan the TTC currently has regarding the order of station to be upgraded with
accessible entrances is different when compared to the

have to work individually according to their own guidelines. Swan also emphasized the importance
of communication by leading bi monthly Update Meetings, rotating the meetings leadership based

Essay about Doubting Thomas
Doubting Thomas
According to Webster, Skepticism is the philosophical doctrine that the attainment of absolute
knowledge is impossible. It comes from the Greek word skeptesthai meaning to examine, and the
practice was brought about during the elementary stages of philosophy by Pyrrho sometime
between 360 270 b.c. Some other well known skeptics are Xenophanes, Gorgias, and Sextus
Empiricus. Skepticism is very common in today s society, and is practiced in some way by all. If

roots of skepticism are also believed to be accredited to Xenophanes, a philosopher and poet of
Asia Minor. He believed that if truth were stated. It could not be known In his writings
Xenophanes cleverly satirized the polytheistic beliefs of earlier Greek poets and of his own
contemporaries. He ridiculed their deities as gods created in the image of the mortals who

depict gods who resembled oxen. He felt that humans should reject polytheistic ascribing of human
motivation and characteristics to inanimate objects, animals, and phenomena and recognize instead
a single non human deity underlying and unifying all worldly phenomena. 117 A parallel to
Xenophanes philosophy is that which was expressed by Gorgias, a famous Sophist. The Sophists

philosophers; but based on their understanding of this prior philosophic thought, most of them

Rhetorical Analysis Of John F. Kennedy s Inaugural Address
John Fitzgerald Kennedy, also known as Jack, was an American statesman who served as the 35th

Kennedy is remembered for many things and one of those many things is inaugural address speech.
After being sworn into the office of presidency our 35th President of the United States of America,
John F. Kennedy, gave a much remembered inaugural address speech. On that cold January day as
thousands of people watched across the globe, President Kennedy used a good amount of rhetoric
devices in his speech to draw the audience s attention so they will listen to what points he was
trying to get across. Throughout the speech Kennedy used the rhetoric devices such as diction,
syntax, sentence structure, antithesis, and parallelism.
The Inaugural address, as it starts, Kennedy uses sturdy diction when he speaks about the world.
In paragraph three, For man holds in his mortal hands the power to eliminate all forms of human
property... the words are chosen that would best grasp the listeners. The way things are ran, or will

main subject yet expanding what should be said. When Kennedy uses syntax, he used short sayings
and lengthen vocabulary. In paragraph six, any is used repeatedly which takes the audience

Stereotypes Of The Traveler
TRAVELLER, TOURIST AND BACKPACKER The concept of the traveller is seen very
differently in comparrison to the tourist. Both have the same interest in being in another country
and experiencing another culture, but to what extent are they experiencing it in the same way?
The tourism industry has created these different types of categories of people who travel to
other countries that have evolved over hundreds of years. Modern travel has become more
affordable to people of all different backgrounds and with growing technology it has helped
create this booming economy that the whole world in some way benefits off of. In todays
society it is now more affordable and easier to reach another country compared to 100 years ago.
This has created both titles of the tourist and travller as the tourist has become a negative title to

talked about how the tourist and traveller have two different meanings, but are they really that
different? If so which title would fit the backpaper? As a traveller or tourist? This will be analysed

  • 2. The Horizon Oil Rig Explosion The 2010 Horizon Oil Rig Explosion On April 20th, 2010 an explosion occurred that would be considered one of the worst oil spills in U.S. history. The explosion was cause by a surge of natural gas that made it way to the Horizon rig s platform that ignited. This caused the rig to capsize and sink, thus breaking risers that were being use to counter act the large amount of pressure from oil and natural gasses (Pallardy, 2015). The explosion killed 11 workers and injured 17 others. The explosion caused a massibe leak in the oil wellhead. It took 87 days for the wellhead to be closed and it is estimated that over that time around 210 million gallons of oil leaked into the gulf (Gulf Oil Spill, 2011). BP workers tried to activate a blowout prevent that was part of the Horizon rig s design. This mechanism was supposed to close off any way to draw out oil bu the mechanism malfunctioned due to the pressure form the gas and oil that cause the explosion (Pallardy, 2015). The explosion happened a few miles from the Loop Current which is a large current of warm water in the Gulf that covers a massive amount of distance making it easy from the oil to spread (Treudaburg Gramling, 2010). Over the next couple of months they tried a variety of different caps to try to stem the flow of oil but they were generally unsuccessful and oil still leaked through. It wasn t until July that the flow was finally stopped by a functional blowout preventer cap (Pallardy, 2015). Impacts on Coral ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay On Rural Areas Defining Rural Areas for Statistical Purposes The vagaries around the rural concept must yield to an objective form in order to have consistent measurement. Since this chapter draws primarily on data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), their definition of rural is consistent and convenient. Since 2006, NCES has used the same urban centric locale definitions used by the US Census Bureau. Fittingly, under this urban centric definition, rural areas include all those located outside of places the Census calls urban. The urban umbrella term includes three locales: cities, suburbs, and towns. Each of these is broken into three subtypes: large, midsize, and small. City locales include territories within an urbanized ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For this reason, this chapter uses the entire rural locale instead of rural sublevels. One wrinkle in NCES s classification system is that while every school can be specifically accounted for as belonging to one locale, school districts can include schools from different locale classifications. For example, a district classified as suburban might include a number of individual schools that are classified as rural. Despite the partial mismatch between the locale of some schools and the districts they belong to, there are valuable reasons to compare school districts by their predominant locale. For instance, districts, rather than schools, are the ones that often deal with issues like transportation or providing opportunities for advanced course taking, which pose unique challenges in rural areas. In order to compare districts by locale, the chapter uses NCES district categorizations which assign a locale based on the predominant locale the district s schools. Of course, this classification system groups together a large number of schools into each locale category that are far from homogeneous. To illustrate differences between locales and across rural areas, select data points are broken out by locale ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Nursing Shortage and Nurse Turnover Nursing shortage and Nurse Turnover The ongoing instability evidenced from the high mobility of qualified nurses in the nursing workforce has raised many questions about the issue of nursing shortage and nurse turnover (Gates Jones, 2007). The paper below discusses the issues of nursing shortage and nurse turnover. The paper also describes how leaders as well as managers in the nursing fraternity and other leaders can resolve those problems effectively and the different applicable principles, skills, roles of the leader, and theories of leadership and management. There are various factors that are contributing to the current nursing shortage and turnover. Apparently the major contributing factors in the USA are a population of nurses that are getting older without adequate replacement, there are fewer than expected faculties dedicated to nursing, there are more career fields opening up particularly for women hence the alternative choices instead of nursing, federal government s failure to fund the nursing education across the country, generally unpleasant working conditions and terms, poor retention of the nurses as well as an overstretched hence overworked nursing staff. According to Paller (2012), the nursing shortage in different countries for example the United States tends not to be the only growing problem, but has also become a complex one. Nursing shortage and nurse s turnover has become the worsening predicament in the health care industry in the United ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

PVD includes both the veins and the arteries. In PVD there is a problem with blood flow due to a narrowing of blood vessels which is occurring from a different pathology. The most common cause of PVD is atherosclerosis. Patients with PVD can range from asymptomatic to severe and require amputations (Giorgi 2015). Etiology Peripheral vascular disease is divided into subcategories of functional and organic. Functional PVD does not involve physical problems in the blood vessels. It causes incidental or short term symptoms. These are usually spasms that occur erratically. Organic PVD involves changes in blood vessel structure. This type of PVD causes inflammation, tissue damage, and blockages (Giorgi 2015). The number one leading cause of peripheral vascular disease is atherosclerosis. This is a gradual process in which a fatty material builds up inside the arteries (emedicinehealth 2015). Other contributing factors to PVD include smoking, inactivity, diabetes, obesity, high blood cholesterol, hypertension, emboli from another location, inflammation of blood vessels, injury to blood vessels, and stress. The Importance Of Conservation During The Progressive Era Conservation was the most important reform, from this time period, since it worked towards protecting the United State s physical environment which leads to obtaining the essential resources of nature, preserving the naturality of the planet, and living a higher quality of life. During the Progressive Era the Second Industrial Revolution was in action, sprouting new technological advancements and ground breaking creations or processes. During this era, new inventions were being made and big monopolies were increasing their use of natural resources to a point where it was becoming harmful. One of the areas of resources that was becoming alarmingly low was forests and lumber, leading to the Forest Reserve Act of 1891. This act, which occurred during the conservation reform, allowed the president to choose forests of interests and claim them as reserves, protecting them from being harmed or negatively affected by big businesses. With the Forest Act many other acts protecting the Earth s resources sprung up as well. All of the acts that were passed restricted important resources from being wasted and blatantly used for company production areas. These acts, enlisted in terms of the government, would allow the president to choose areas in which resources could always exist and couldn t be overused. Why The Rise And Fall Of The Byzantine Empire Shepherd Warren HH 215 Major Mitchell 1 May 2015 Why The Rise and Fall of The Byzantine Empire The Byzantine Empire, or the Eastern Roman Empire, was one of the largest the world has ever seen and it remained so powerful for many reasons but like every empire, it would fall. In 330 A.D., The Roman Emperor Constantine I chose Byzantium to become the new Roman Capitol, he named it Constantinople. The site of Byzantium was originally created to serve as a trade point between Europe and Asia Minor but it was very helpful because of its strategic location along the Bosporus strait. A key significance of Byzantium is in the citizens of Constantinople and the rest of the Eastern Roman Empire who identified strongly as Romans and Christians for the first time ever. The Byzantine Empire would be able to last so long because the ineffective leadership and barbarian attacks that plagued the Western Roman Empire, did not really harm the Byzantine Empire due the west being a screener for the barbarians and the East having very strong leadership through this time. Through this time period, the Byzantine s were able to develop technology such as Greek fire and the counterweight trebuchet. The Byzantine Empire was one of longest lasting empires ever because of its leadership and technology over the years but it would fall because of its inability to maintain defenses against the crusades. Victor Frankenstein Analysis Raabia Cheema AP Literature Frankenstein Midpoint Assessment November 1, 2017 Glory is coveted by most and the pursuit of it can cause untold changes within an individual s character. In spite of this, glory in whatever field possesses the threat of becoming an obsession. Thus, the increasing extent to which one pursues their passion through their journey will shift it to obsession and rid the subject of innocence often through violence. Both Victor Frankenstein and R. Walton attempt to take on such a quest, however, Frankensteindisplays the adverse effects of such an obsession. The desire to create and discover is one endured by both Walton and Frankenstein; each realizing that in attaining such glory, one must sacrifice their innocence. Walton expresses his need to ВЁaccomplish some great purposeВЁ, citing that, to him, glory was more valuable than the pecuniary advantage he already possesses (Shelley, p. 3). Despite his own thinking, Walton s own search is truly one for self knowledge and wisdom, as his own soul is overcome with a ВЁlove for the marvellous, a belief in the marvellousВЁ (Shelley, p.6). Thus, Walton is still seeking to fulfill the peregrination his passion has set him on, hoping that he will find answers to his own true purpose, under the disguise of glory (Foster, Chapter 1). The average summer temperatures across the northeastern United States, Canadian Maritime Provinces and much of Europe were colder than any other year in the previous 600 years, with the exception of the summer of 1601. The estimated mean surface temperature anomaly for the northern hemisphere in 1816 is 0.51 K. In Europe, temperatures averaged 1 2 C cooler than was typical of the surrounding years, and there was also an increase in precipitation. The most common explanation for this climate anomaly is that it was caused by the 1815 eruption in Indonesia of Tambora, the largest known eruption in history. In the story The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas by Ursula Le Guin, the life of a young child is ignored and imprisoned in order to make others happy. However, the situation in Omelas can be approached in one or two ways, including either the deontological view or the utilitarianism view. The city of Omelas is portrayed to individuals as a welcoming place that is full of festivals and happiness. However, this is not the case since a young child is forced into imprisonment. Related to the city of Omelas, the ones that believe in utilitarianism would view Omelas as a good society and see nothing wrong in the actions and results being made. Their belief is in the system that happiness is the ultimate goal and the actions are not as important as the overall happiness of the general public. There were no rules set that hindered what the citizens could do to make a majority of them happy, so imprisoning the child was not a significant issue to them. So rather than making everyone suffer a little, the child will suffer forever so the rest do not. While it in itself may be horrible, they view it as a way which increases the utility of the people which makes the actions morally worthy. Additionally, their perspective is that the people that leave Omelas due to not agreeing with the situation is good as well. The reason for that is because they are making the overall happiness level stay the same because the people that are unhappy are leaving the city all together. The deontological view is better than the utilitarianism view because utilitarianism just worries about the greater good enjoying happiness, no matter the circumstances that an individual suffers. While deontology views the incident as that no one should suffer to make everyone happier, and everyone should be able to enjoy happiness without suffrage. Because if one ... • 26. Epistemology And Belief Of Epistemology Essay In this paper I will be writing about knowledge and belief referring to epistemology. I will be answering questions such as, What is knowledge and What is belief . I will also answer other questions related to the epistemology of knowledge and beliefs. Before we get into knowledge and beliefs, we must define what epistemologyis and why epistemology is important. What is epistemology? The word itself derives from two Greek words: Episteme meaning knowledge and understanding and Logia meaning science of study. In philosophy, epistemology is the study of knowledge, in general. Examples of epistemological questions would be; what does knowledge mean, how does a person get to know something, and what is the basis for true knowledge. Epistemology has to do with how people s minds are connected to reality, whether invalid or valid. What is the importance of epistemology? Epistemology explains our way of thinking. Through the correct use of evaluation, epistemology is necessary to be able to separate what is true and what is false. We couldn t think if not for epistemology. • 27. Determinism In Jack London s To Build A Fire An Analytic Jack London s story named To Build a Fire has many themes attached to it. Through this story, the author attempts to convey messages regarding man s mental makeup and process. The overall theme is one of a battle between naturalism and determinism and various themes linking the two. Determinism argues that man does not have free will but rather their circumstances are shaped by their environmental or biological makeup (which is out of their control). In the story, the concept of determinism is what provides context to the fact that life is amoral; the man defines any negative outcomes as a lack of luck or an accident which gives credence to the fact that the story starts out as deterministic in nature. The concept of determinism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The man, although highly adept at the management of tools and processes to start a fire, was clearly devoid of instinct when the need for the anticipation of a hazard arose (which is a key component of survival). The man also did not have the ability to translate the effects of the cold, to the hazard it posed to him; routinely shrugging off the cold and disregarding the advice given by the man from Sulphur Creek. On the other hand, the story portrayed the dog as having great instinct in that even though it does not have the intellectual ability to understand the cold; it instinctively bites the ice forming between its toes. It is possible to glean from the story that the man is actually fighting against nature to survive, but the environment does not have any link to the struggles of the man. It is not nature s determination to hurt the man; rather that nature is indifferent to its inhabitants. The relentless force of nature causes the man in the story to change his goal after a couple of accidents . Initially, he started off with the aim of reaching the camp, then it changed to fighting against the frostbite, and ultimately the instincts kicked in and he merely wanted to stay ... In this case, sales that would normally have occurred in 1998 were recorded in 1997. Assuming a positive gross profit on these sales, earnings in 1997 is inflated. Even though the fee is nonrefundable, it is not earned until services are provided. Since there is no contractual period of service, it must be estimated. Mega would be justified in recognizing only $3 of the initial fee immediately to offset the cost of the membership card. The payment option chosen by members does not affect the revenue recognition policy. The monthly fee should be recognized as revenue upon billing, as long as adequate provision is made for possible uncollectible amounts. The distance people with mobility challenges must travel to accessible stations was minimized during incremental system improvements using nonlinear programming with binary decision variables. The process was performed using Excel s Solver feature, and based on TTC data and distance data scraped from Google Maps using the gmapsdistance R package. SOLUTION EVALUATION Excel s solver function was used to walk through all meaningful values for the resource constraint, yielding a satisficing prioritized project schedule. The decrease in the objective function looks approximately exponential, typical of a Pareto distribution. The formulation of the problem allows low direct cost stations to be prioritized in the case that they lower the cost of adjacent stations. The full prioritized schedule is shown in Table 2. These results show that improvements at Islington, Coxwell, College, Sherbourne, Runnymede, and Rosedale would have indirect benefits that make improvements more valuable than present day contributions to the objective function suggest. Conversely, while those indirect benefits result in other improvements having lower than expected utility. The stations affected are Royal York, Woodbine, Wellesley, High Park, Greenwood, Castle Frank, and Summerhill. Some of these stations are still high priority, such as Royal York, but improvements will be less effective than expected based on ridership. He believed that if truth were stated. It could not be known In his writings Xenophanes cleverly satirized the polytheistic beliefs of earlier Greek poets and of his own contemporaries. He ridiculed their deities as gods created in the image of the mortals who worshiped them. In a famous passage he asserted that if oxen could paint and sculpt, they would depict gods who resembled oxen. He felt that humans should reject polytheistic ascribing of human motivation and characteristics to inanimate objects, animals, and phenomena and recognize instead a single non human deity underlying and unifying all worldly phenomena. 117 A parallel to Xenophanes philosophy is that which was expressed by Gorgias, a famous Sophist. Ordinarily no, but in certain circumstances committing a homicide can be excused due to insanity or be justified because the situation called for self defense or the defense of others. As with many aspects of the law, there can be ambiguity present about whether or not a crime meets the criteria of an excuse or justification, as we have seen in the State v. At issue in the case is whether the danger that the defendant, Judy Ann Laws Norman, felt was imminent in order to justify the homicide she committed when she shot her husband. The perception of the threat was reasonable since any reasonable person would feel in danger if someone brandished a gun at them. Finally, the store clerk was entitled to use deadly force to defend himself since the perpetrator was using deadly force as leverage in the situation.
