FEMINISM: THEN AND NOW
THEN:
 Social/Politically radical movement
 Women’s suffrage
 Forceful attempt to gain gender equality
 Involved violent activism
NOW:
 New individualist identity
 Woman liberating herself
 Disregards collective ambition
CONCEPTIONS OF FEMINISM
 Why do we still need Feminism?
 Aren’t women already liberated?
 Fear in being labelled a feminist in today’s
society
 Negative connotations
 Associated with violence and male-hatred
 General feminist stereotype:
An angry woman with hairy legs, ready to
blame men for everything
THE MODERN FEMINIST
 Modern public figures such
as Beyoncé glamourise
feminism.
 Feminism becomes linked to
women’s independence
and self-respect. As her
some of her hit songs
suggest:
Who run the world? (girls)
All the single ladies
Flawless
• Utilising an attractive, feisty
approach for young women.
SELLING FEMINISM
Feminism today appears to be mostly
associated with women finding confidence
within themselves, rather than being a
concern about social, political and economic
inequalities that continue to exist between the
sexes within society.
Modern day feminism addresses personal
issues that commonly face women
–such as body image and relationship status.
Feminism has become a reason to sell and
buy things
–such as Beyoncé's music and Jessica
Valenti’s book
“Capitalism, which in a
sense knows no morals,
couldn’t care less about
the positive, happy,
‘feminist’ reclaiming of
sex so long as it makes
a buck out of skimpy
nightwear and thongs”
(Power, 2009).
INTERSECTIONALITY
Intersectionality recognises the
varying, “multi-layered facets”
that exist in each, individual
woman's life.
Race, gender, class, ability and
ethnicity
Feminism as a collective
endeavour that recognises
women all face different
hurdles within life
–not all feminists are the same
“Today’s feminist
movement is said to
be in danger of
losing momentum
unless it recognises
that not every
feminist is white,
middle class, cis-
gendered and able
bodied”
(Vidal, 2014).

  • 5. Editor's Notes

  1. Initially, feminism was a socially and politically radical movement. After a long history of being held second to men, women struggled for equal treatment and respect. Suffrage thus marks the centrality of first wave feminism (Moynagh & Forestell, 2012). However, change was not to come easily. Early feminists intended to overturn existing norms by taking drastic measures. This included violent activism –which often lead to imprisonment- and hunger strikes. Jumping forward into the 21st century, feminism has taken on a new identity. This reinvention of feminism has led to an individualist approach –woman liberating herself- rather than the previous attitude of feminism being a collective ambition (Power, 2009). Image (left): http://people.howstuffworks.com/feminism2.htm (accessed 21/5/14). Image (right): http://www.theatlantic.com/sexes/archive/2013/07/selling-feminism-a-history/278010/ (accessed 21/5/14).
  2. The term ‘feminism’ has become so broad in today’s society that it is used to justify almost anything: to sell trainers…to ensure women have self-respect because they use a self-esteem-enhancing shampoo (Viner, 2002). Furthermore, feminism in the 21st century has been attached to an endless line of negative connotations. This commonly held position exists due to the stereotype of the feminist: an angry woman with hairy legs who is out to get men. Additionally, people assume that women have already been liberated. As Power (2009) points out, people will decline from claiming themselves to be feminists as they do not want to be “associated with its invocation by the bellicose” and are “worried about putting men off”. Image: http://snippits-and-slappits.blogspot.com.au/2013/03/saturday-cartoons-march-2-2013.html (accessed 19/5/14).
  3. World renowned performer Beyoncé is utilising her power and position to address feminism. However, she was reluctant to call herself a ‘feminist’ as she said “that word can be very extreme” (Selby, 2014). Beyoncé claims to be striving towards women’s equalities, especially by incorporating elements of modern day feminism into her work. Issues begin to arise here, as feminism becomes “stripped of any internationalist and political quality” (Power, 2009), as she has used a new, reinforcing and very appealing approach towards feminism in order to attract people to her music. Image (top): http://globalgrind.com/2013/12/17/proof-beyonce-has-always-been-a-feminist-list-songs/ (accessed 21/5/14). Image (bottom left): http://www.fanpop.com/clubs/beyonce/images/19652163/title/single-ladies-put-ring-on-music-video-screencap (accessed 21/5/14). Image (bottom right): http://www.sofeminine.co.uk/celebrities/beyonce-flawless-sp195765.html (accessed 21/5/14).
  4. Furthermore, feminism is fed through society in other ways. Unlike Beyoncé’s feisty approach, Jessica Valenti takes another, equally appealing approach toward feminism. Both advocate for female independence and stance, but Valenti organises feminism into being as feminine as one can be, or as Power (2009) puts it, “a desperate bid to sell feminism as the latest must-have accessory”. Feminism has become increasingly similar to capitalism in that feminism is used to endorse products, whether they be things that teach us how to be ‘feminists’ (books, films, music) or things that help us to be ‘feminists’ (food, shopping, chocolate).
  5. As most views toward feminism today have been bound up in negative stereotyping, it is evident that attempts to re-shape it into a more enticing phenomenon -by glamourising it with values regarding self-respect and self-esteem- have helped to sell feminism. However, this is problematic as feminism begins to categorise women, neglecting the “multi-layered facets” that exist within life. These vary from woman to woman and include such things as race, gender, class, ability and ethnicity (Vidal, 2014). Despite being around for decades, the concept of intersectionality in feminism has only reached mainstream debate recently (Vidal, 2014). It recognises these multi-layered facets which effect all women in different ways. It relates to all feminists, as its message is to start listening to and including various groups of women and their differentiating experiences of life into the overall debate (Vidal, 2014).
