3. Architect Oscar Niemeyer was born on
December 15, 1907, in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil.
Niemeyer came up with his first major
project in 1941, planning buildings for the
Pampulha Architectural Complex.
His designs were noted for their free-flowing
forms.
Other projects included working on the
United Nations building and designing the
Contemporary Art Museum in Niterói and
major buildings in the capital city of Brasília.

4. Oscar Niemeyer was born in a wealthy family without any aspirations toward
being an architect.
Though he started drawing at early age.
When he was very little he used to draw in the air with his fingers, and after he could
hold a pencil he never stopped drawing.
Niemeyer graduated from Barnabitas College in 1923 and received a degree in
architecture in 1934 from the National School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro.

• Niemeyer was hired by architect Lucio Costa shortly before he graduated
from the National School of Fine Arts.
• the young Niemeyer was brought to work on the designs of the Ministry of
Education and Health Building with Costa.
• Work on these buildings brought niemeyer in contact with LE CORBUSIER
,who was brought in to evaluate the designs.
• The team worked and developed the MINISTRY OF EDUCATION and
HEALTH BUILDING IN 1936.

6. Niemeyer worked with Costa on many major buildings between 1936 and
1943
In 1941, Niemeyer launched his solo career by designing a series of
buildings called the Pampulha Architectural Complex in the city of Belo
Horizonte.
Niemeyer started developing some of his design trademarks, including the
heavy use of concrete and a propensity toward curves.
As he said ,”I am attracted to free-flowing, sensual curves of mountains
,rivers and woman’s body.”,

8. The palace became symbol of the modern movement of Brazilian
architecture, of cultural and technical progress of the country.
ARCHITECTURE
Its columns became symbol of the city, and are present in the
flag and coat of arms of the capital of the Republic.

9. The symmetry of the marble columns combines with the reflex in the glass
facade and in the water mirror.
The columns touch the ground in one vortex, passing an impression of
lightness.
Niemeyer used a combination of marble, glass and water.
10. The basement level houses the movie theater, game room, kitchen, laundry,
medical center, and the building's administration.
The ground floor houses the state rooms used by the presidency for official
receptions. It is made up of the Entrance Hall, Waiting Room, State Room,
Library, Mezzanine, Dining Room, Noble Room, Music Room and Banquet
Room.
• The Entrance Hall is the main entrance area of the palace.
• The Waiting Room is decorated with tapestry made by Concessa Colaço
entitled Manhã de Cores.
• The State Room is furnished with a mixture of contemporary and antique
items.
• The Banquet Room was designed by Anna Maria Niemeyer, and features a
large dining table with fifty seats.
The second floor is the residential part of the palace, with the presidential
apartment consisting of four suites, two guest apartments and other private
rooms.

president of Brazil.
Standing at 40 stories tall.
The JK Building is the third tallest building in Brazil after the Itália Building (45
stories) and Mirante do Vale (51 stories).
13 kinds of apartments are found there (up to 3 or 4 bedrooms) and several kinds of
people and families live there, too
Shops on the first floor, with access from the streets, provide inhabitants with
everything they need without leaving the building.
