The Latin prefix "psych" is translated into "mind or soul". The suffix "ology" means the "study of". Therefore, the study of behavior and mental
processes is known as psychology. This field of study deals with animal and human behavior to the environment to which they are exposed.
The purpose of psychologists studying the behavior of their "subjects", or the people or animals being observed or tested, is to find four main things.
These goals are to describe, explain, predict, and/or influence the subject's behavior.
Contemporary psychologists go about their research with six main methods of study. These contemporary methods of study are Psychoanalytic

A problem included with this method is the fact that not everything in behavioral psychology is observable. Many aspects of psychology are mental not
behavioral.
The Humanistic approach to psychology is the approach that focuses on humans' personal growth. Humanists, or psychologists who use the humanistic
method, believe that the stimuli a human is exposed to is just the background of their actions. The human's internal growth drives his/her actions. A
problem with this method is that it is impossible to quantify the emotions on how a person handles an experience.
Cognitive psychology is the study of how a person comprehends and stores information. The researchers who study cognitive psychology are known as
Cognitivists. These psychologists focus on the habits that subjects use to remember information and then later retrieve the information. Using the
scientific method, Cognitivists go through a series of steps to test our thinking, language, problem solving, and creativity. They then take the results of
their studies and make conclusions on how information is processed, stored, and used. Problems associated with this method are the chance that
subjects might have already learned the information earlier in life.
Another viewpoint of psychologists is Biological psychology. This is a mix of psychology and biology. Psychobiologists who study this are more
scientist than psychologist. They believe that genetics, the nervous system, the brain,

Reflection About Contemporary Literature
There are many concepts and new information that I learned from this course. The aspect that I enjoyed the most about contemporary literature was
the advantage of reading short stories over novels. Short stories are more interesting to me because they tell so much in just a few pages. The genre
of contemporary literature was also captivating because of the realness and depth of the characters. The themes of the stories also covered a great

Abraham Maslow, an American psychologist and a founder of humanistic psychology who developed the Hierarchy of needs. Maslow's hierarchy of
needs is a description of the needs that motivate human behaviour. In 1943, Abraham Maslow proposed five different kinds of human needs,
beginning with the most basic: survival. Physiological needs, such as food and shelter, are followed by needs related to safety. Next, there are needs
of love and belonging. Fourth, humans have needs of esteem, such as the need for being respected. The final need in the hierarchy is the need for

What is Modern Art? Modern Art was created roughly during the 1800s to the 1900s. Before this period, art depicted religious or mythological scenes
that told stories and guided the audience through art. "Modern Art denotes the style and philosophy of the art produced during that era."(Arnason)
This time was usually connected with art that threw the old traditions aside in a spirit of experimentation. This doesn't mean that modern art pieces
don't have a story or a meaning behind them. To break out of the tradition, artists had to have courage to do what they loved. In Basic Writings of
Kant, Wood states, "Have courage to use your own reason." Modern art can range from paintings to sculptures. Some artists experimented with the
expressive use of color, non–traditional materials, new techniques, and new mediums. Two of the most popular modern works, currently presented at
Los Angeles County Museum of Art, were "The Jewel" by Jay DeFeo and "Irregular Forms: Creation" by Frantisek Kupka . Both of these paintings
were expressed with oil paint on canvas. However, despite the same mediums used in their works, these two have very opposing feeling from each other.
"The Jewel" by Jay DeFeo was started in 1958 and was finished in 1959. This is a gorgeous giant piece which measures up to 120" by 57.5". The
