Title: International system for conservation status assesment
2. International system:
for conservation status assessment.
IUCN red list of threatened species
The best known worldwide conservation status listing and ranking system.
3. IUCN:
IUCN: International Union for Conservation of Nature.
The most authentic conservation status system
Founded on 5th October 1948.
In France, currently based in Switzerland
11k scientist working voluntarily
1k working staff
4. IUCN red list of threatened species:
Also called IUCN red list or red data list
The best known worldwide conservation status listing and ranking system.
Last released was on 9th July 2012
Classified species into 9 categories on the basis of
Rate of decline
Population size
Area of geographic distribution
And degree of population fragmentation
5. IUCN red list of threatened species:
Also include species that have been extinct since 500AD.
6. Categories
Extinct (EX):No known individuals remaining
Extinct in the wild (EW):Known only to survive in captivity.
7. categories
Critically endangered (CR): Extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.
criteria:
when a specie covering area is only 100 km square.
Mature specie less then 50
In 2012, 2466 animals spps and 2104 plant spps are citically endangered
Endangered (EN): High risk of extinction in the wild.
Criteria:
70 percent reduction occure in population in last 10 years
When a specie cover only 500km square area.
Mature members less then 280
8. categories
Vulnerable (VU): High risk of endangerment in the wild
Criteria:
When 20 percent reduction occur in population in past 10 years
When a specie cover only or less then 2000 km square.
According to IUCN in 2012,7428 animals spp and 4914 plant spps are vulnerable.
9. categories
Near threatened (NT): Likely to become endangered in the near future.
Least concern (LC):Lowest risk; does not qualify for a higher risk category.
Data deficient (DD):Not enough data to make an assessment of its risk of
extinction
Not evaluated (NE):Has not yet been evaluated against the criteria.
10. Aims:
To help the international community to try to reduce species extinction
To draw attention to the importance of threatened biodiversity
To influence national and international policy and decision-making,
and to provide information to guide actions to conserve biological diversity.
