The document discusses the IUCN Red List categories for classifying species based on extinction risk. It outlines the categories of Extinct, Endangered, Vulnerable and Threatened. Species listed as Extinct no longer exist, Endangered species are at very high risk of extinction, Vulnerable species are at high risk of extinction without intervention, and Threatened species are likely to become endangered. Examples of endangered species in India include the Asiatic Lion, Bengal Tiger, and Snow Leopard. Vulnerable Indian species mentioned are the Barasingha, Blackbuck, Nilgiri Langur, and One Horned Rhinoceros.

2. Red Data Categories
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of
Threatened Species (also known as the IUCN Red List or Red Data Book),
founded in 1964, is the world’s most comprehensive inventory of the global
conservation status of biological species.
They are of 9 categories.
Extinct (EX) – beyond reasonable doubt that the species is no longer extant.
Extinct in the wild (EW) – survives only in captivity, cultivation and/or outside
native range, as presumed after exhaustive surveys.
Critically endangered (CR) – in a particularly and extremely critical state
Endangered (EN) – very high risk of extinction in the wild, meets any of criteria
A to E for Endangered.
Vulnerable (VU) – meets one of the 5 red list criteria and thus considered to
be at high risk of unnatural (human-caused) extinction without further human
intervention.
3. Contd.
Near threatened (NT) – close to being endangered in the near future.
Least concern (LC) – unlikely to become endangered or extinct in the near
future.
Data deficient (DD)
Not evaluated (NE)
With its strong scientific base, the IUCN Red List is recognized as the most
authoritative guide to the status of biological diversity.
A series of Regional Red Lists are produced by countries or organizations,
which assess the risk of extinction to species within a political management
unit.
4. Extinct
Extinction is the termination of a kind of organism or of a group of kinds
(taxon), usually a species. The moment of extinction is generally considered
to be the death of the last individual of the species.
5. Endangered
Endangered species as classified by the International Union for Conservation
of Nature (IUCN), are species which have been categorized as very likely to
become extinct in their known native ranges in the near future. On the IUCN
Red List, endangered is the second most severe conservation status for wild
populations in the IUCN’s schema after critically endangered.
The endangered species in India are
Asiatic Lion
Bengal Tiger
Snow Leopard
Nilgiri Tahr
Kashmiri Red Stag
Blackbuck
One- horned rhinoceros.
6. Vulnerable
A vulnerable species is a species which has been categorized by the International
Union for Conservation of Nature that is threatened with extinction unless the
circumstances that are threatening its survival and reproduction improve.
Vulnerable species in India are:-
Barasingha
Blackbuck.
Nilgiri Langur.
Yak.
One Horned Rhinoceros.
Olive Ridley Turtle.
Red Panda.
Sloth Bear.
