Presentation to in-service leadership conferenceMount Vernon Presbyterian School, Atlanta, GeorgiaAugust 18, 2009
What we tell ourselves about the challenge at hand and our willingness and ability to address it is everything! What do we tell ourselves? What is the pervasive talk in our culture? Will the two above get us where we need to go?
“The greatest challenge we face today is leading into uncertainty: we’re not sure we know how.” This is what a school head recently told me as we discussed her strategic objectives over the next school year. Our conversation centered around preparing kids for their futures, meeting a vast array of parent needs, and leading her teachers and staff to make tremendous adaptive changes in all aspects of their practice. “Our position must be embracing the new, being relevant and aligned to the culture. Or, we risk facing futures like those of the auto industry and print media.”It is essential to be relevant to the lives of our students and their parents. And, schools must work to own and maintain their position as trusted, knowledgeable teaching and learning experts, helping prepare students for higher education and for life. The pace of technological innovation is changing the way the world communicates. It is changing traditional power structures. It is changing consumer and customer expectations. Is is changing traditionally successful economic models. It is changing our respect for authority. It is changing everything. Are we denying, coping, or adapting? How are we surveying this changing landscape? What realities exist on the marketplace curve? What is the risk of extending the status quo? What opportunities lie in the relevance gap?How can we extend the lens of our mission to generating innovation to traverse the gap? What internal and external hurdles are to be expected? What would be your list of strategic questions?
Another key element in creating sustainable culture change is to align the need to change with the right motivating factor. The need to change is not created at the whim of the leader. The current marketplace/culture conditions are causing this great disruption is what has been an extremely complacent and stable environment. The needs of our learners are markedly different.Tony Wagner, The Global Achievement Gap“Rigor Redefined” articleWe need to develop these needs in ourselves in order to develop them in our learners.
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall….What do we tell ourselves about the critical nature of adapting our pedagogy and knowledge to meet the current demands of our students, their parents, the needs of their future employers? What do we tell ourselves about the ability to grow and learn and evolve our practice? What do we tell ourselves about working together to accomplish this big task? Autonomy v. entrepreneurialism and an independent spirit. What is the true essence of servant leadership- who are we to serve?
Why take the chance? As a faculty body, as a school, what is your story in answering this question? It matters. Is your story: we shall, we must?Is your story, why bother? Is your story, she might but I don’t feel like it?
Pretty typcial traditional view of Story
Blooms 3.0The world has changed – totally need to incorporate these changes into teaching and learning. Not really a choice if we want to do what we have always done: make a difference in the lives of children, prepared them with skills, knowledge, perspective, values. They speak a new language
Storyboards:Writing, visual thinking, critical thinking, sequencing, language, character development, structure, arc,….It is writing, communicating a message. Actually could argue that it is better writing instruction because of the deconstructive nature than the 5 paragraph theme!
Famous picture from National Geographic.Every picture tells a story – what would we hers. Very low tech writing prompt but better than a lot of writing instruction in the past.Opens up visual thinking and creativity. Kids needs an opportunity for work that is expressive and thinking but has not right and wrong answers.
AnotherOwnership of the ideas and the workAbout the possibilitiesGood for workshopping
Identity.Even older elementary school students are creatures of the culture and starting to ask who they are and where their place in the world is. This is a great assignment that will reveal many writing topics and possibilities for a student.Identity is created from culture. Can’t talk about identity and ignore the culture. In the spaces are the learning discussions and opportunities
