Dear Sir/Madam,
Please, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Viviana K. Haon. I am a Teacher.
Teaching is my passion.
Today we have a more diverse and multicultural student body than ever before on
our nation’s history. This is obvious not only in the infinite number of skin tones or in the
exposure to all the languages of the world that echo around us, but also in the life
experiences and traditions that our children are exposed to in today’s classrooms. This is at
the same time an opportunity to enrich our understanding of the world around us and the
people that we call our neighbors and sometimes, our friends. But, it is also a challenging
time, to tear down the walls that seem to separate us from each other. Ignorance and fear
have always made us stay away from and sometimes reject those who do not identify with
our traditions, languages, customs and cultures.
Many of these barriers can begin to be torn down by first, teaching our children how
important it is to appreciate and understand our own culture, our own language and that of
our predecessors, our own heritage, our own history and our own art. Only by creating t his
awareness of ourselves will we then learn to respect and value those differences that make
us all so unique. This will inevitably teach us, to our very own surprise, that there are as
many things that we have in common, as things that distinguish us. T his can only be taught
through language… and art.
This is why I specialize in Art and Spanish Language Education, because this presents us
with a unique opportunity to achieve this and so much more. Those early formative years
can have such a great positive impact on the minds of our children, one that will last
throughout a whole lifetime. Art teaches the use of our imagination, and by applying
learned skills and techniques, we can enrich our own abilities to create, as we delight
ourselves with the discovery of our own history, our own language, self worth and our own
heritage. Art is more than just being able to draw or paint or sculpt or sing or dance. Art is
what we all have in common. Art is what can keep us together.
Learning a second language is an important element of the cognitive development of a
young child’s mind. This is why I chose to teach the Spanish Language. Not only because it
is my original and mother tongue, but also because, today, it has become a very important
language for culture, history and commerce. The major universities in the United States
recognize this fact, making it almost a requirement of their many considerations for
admission. Businesses across the industries demand it from their management and from
their new hires. My goal is to prepare our children for the future demands on their
employment or place of business, in order to give them an edge, an advantage, in this
dynamic and highly competitive world of ours.
2. To me, being a teacher is more than just a profession, it is a mission. It is my way to
contribute and give back to society. It is the way for me to positively influence the lives of
scores of future adults that will grow up much more balanced, wiser, understanding,
tolerable and highly appreciative of their environment and able to live more enriched lives.
Discovering the many wonders of learning Art, as well as Spanish as a Second Language,
can do this and so much more. All everyone needs is a chance, an opportunity to discover
and understand. We all need a little taste of what life is all about.
This is why I am committed to teaching. This is why I love teaching so much. I had the
chance to discover something wonderful, about myself, about others and about life itself.
Since January of 2008 I have been working first, as a Full Time Substitute Teacher for the
Board of Education of the township of North Bergen, NJ, and since September 2011, as a
Certified Art Teacher. (Also, certified as a Spanish Language Teacher.) This has been a
great opportunity to enter the teaching field head on and to experience firsthand what my
contributions can mean to so many children that I’ve had the great privilege to teach.
What a great opportunity! All this time I was practicing and learning and also expanding my
horizons on teaching, while at the same time preparing and researching what needs to be
done to really get all these children on board on a trip to discovery of the fine arts and
lifelong learning. It is so rewarding to see how they begin to use everything they have
learned before to start to, this time, use their creative imagination and inspirations to create
something so unique to themselves and so original. The best reward is to see in the faces of
these seven, nine, eleven year old children light up and want to take their art work home,
to proudly show their parents at home.
To me, nothing compares to teaching. Nothing perhaps more valuable a lesson than to see
oneself capable of creating something that comes deep from within our own selves. This is
more than just a hobby or a pastime or entertainment. I truly believe it to be the foundation
to values and to character and to respect and appreciation for others. Starting with a deep
self respect and appreciation for where we come from and more importantly, for ourselves.
That is what teaching is all about.
I ask you for the opportunity to meet you personally to elaborate further on my
qualifications, as well as on my personal reasons to join you in your mission and become an
integral part of the success of the Educational team in your District. You will not be
disappointed.
Please, do not hesitate to call me right now, to set up an interview date and time that is
most convenient for you.
Most sincerely,
Viviana K. Haon
