WHO DEFINITON OF HEALTH
“Health is a state of complete
physical, mental, spiritual and social
wellbeing and not merely an absence
of disease or infirmity.
CONCEPT OF HEALTH
 It is a comprehensive because it refers to wellbeing of
all the dimensions of life i.e. physical, mental and
social. A fourth dimension i.e. spiritual dimension is
added to this definition in recent years. It is positive
because it is not just the absence of disease but it refers
to complete state of wellbeing and reflect holistic
nature of human being. This definition does not permit
variations or degree of health. It denotes perfect health
which is an ideal goal. But this goal is unachievable
and hence not realistic

ECOLOGICAL CONCEPT
 It is a state of dynamic equilibrium between his man and his
environmental force , including specific agents.

ENVIRONMENT
CONTINUUM OF HEALTH
 Health not only fluctuates depending upon the health equilibrium but
also there are variations in the degree or level of health.
 It ranges from optimal health to total disability or death. This range of
health refers to continuum of health.
 This continuum also reflects time dimension from beginning of life to
death. As we move through various stages of life our health status
fluctuates from optimal level to state of various level of health and
degree of deviation at each stage of life, finally to death
CONTINUUM OF HEALTH
 There is a centre point which demarcates between health and diseases
sides of the continuum.
 There are different levels or degree of health like there are degree or
severity of disease.
 The health side of the continuum is known as health grid and disease
side of the continuum is known as disease grid.
 Primary level preventive measures which include health promotion
and specific protective measures are implemented to move towards
optimal health.
 Secondary and tertiary level of preventive measure which include
early diagnosis and treatment , prevention of disabilities and
rehabilitation measures are implemented to recover from disease
toward optimal health
WELLNESS CONCEPT OF HEALTH
According to Dunn, “Health is defined as a
dynamic state of wellness which exist on a
continuum and ranges from a high level of
wellness to high level of illness”.

 This concept is comparable to continuum of health which ranges from
optimum health or total disability or death
 There is increasing or decreasing level of wellness comparable to degree of
health or there is increasing or decreasing level of illness comparable to
extend of disease
RELATIVE CONCEPT OF HEALTH
 Health is relative and not absolute.
 It is related to one’s environment , lifestyle, physiological
changes that take place in various stages of life span and
resources etc.
HOLISTIC CONCEPT OF HEALTH
HOLISTIC CONCEPT OF HEALTH
 Person can perform various functions related to
physical, mental, social and spiritual aspects.
 William defined health as “ Health as a quality of life
that enables individuals to live and serve best”

 It is related to body structure and its physiology
 Refers to the normal functioning of the tissues, organs,
and system of body
 There is good appetite, sound sleep and regularity of
bowel and bladder
 Body movement are coordinated
 To know that person is fit vital signs and lab
investigations etc can be done

 Mental health is related to mind and refers to normal functioning
of mind and not merely, the absence of mental illness.

Characteristics of mentally healthy individual which are
identified are as follows:-
 He is free from internal conflict and tension
 He is self confident
 He is able to feel a part of others and harmonious
relation with others
 He is well adjusted and able to meet the demands of
life and able to solve problems intelligently

 It refers to ability that enables the individual to become
a whole person in the existing social structure
 He is able to make lasting friendships that is satisfying
 He learns from his society about socio cultural
 Social health of an individual is influenced by social
system of society

 It pertains to soul or spirit of man
 It refers to believe in super natural aspects of universe
which help individual to seek meaning and purpose in
life
 It is associated with the religious belief of an individual
 This gives strength and determination to face realities of
life

  • 3. WHO DEFINITON OF HEALTH “Health is a state of complete physical, mental, spiritual and social wellbeing and not merely an absence of disease or infirmity.
  • 4. CONCEPT OF HEALTH  It is a comprehensive because it refers to wellbeing of all the dimensions of life i.e. physical, mental and social. A fourth dimension i.e. spiritual dimension is added to this definition in recent years. It is positive because it is not just the absence of disease but it refers to complete state of wellbeing and reflect holistic nature of human being. This definition does not permit variations or degree of health. It denotes perfect health which is an ideal goal. But this goal is unachievable and hence not realistic

  • 6. ECOLOGICAL CONCEPT  It is a state of dynamic equilibrium between his man and his environmental force , including specific agents. AGENT HOST ENVIRONMENT

CONTINUUM OF HEALTH  Health not only fluctuates depending upon the health equilibrium but also there are variations in the degree or level of health.  It ranges from optimal health to total disability or death. This range of health refers to continuum of health.  This continuum also reflects time dimension from beginning of life to death. As we move through various stages of life our health status fluctuates from optimal level to state of various level of health and degree of deviation at each stage of life, finally to death

CONTINUUM OF HEALTH  There is a centre point which demarcates between health and diseases sides of the continuum.  There are different levels or degree of health like there are degree or severity of disease.  The health side of the continuum is known as health grid and disease side of the continuum is known as disease grid.  Primary level preventive measures which include health promotion and specific protective measures are implemented to move towards optimal health.  Secondary and tertiary level of preventive measure which include early diagnosis and treatment , prevention of disabilities and rehabilitation measures are implemented to recover from disease toward optimal health
  • 10. WELLNESS CONCEPT OF HEALTH According to Dunn, “Health is defined as a dynamic state of wellness which exist on a continuum and ranges from a high level of wellness to high level of illness”.

Contd…..  This concept is comparable to continuum of health which ranges from optimum health or total disability or death  There is increasing or decreasing level of wellness comparable to degree of health or there is increasing or decreasing level of illness comparable to extend of disease
  • 12. RELATIVE CONCEPT OF HEALTH  Health is relative and not absolute.  It is related to one’s environment , lifestyle, physiological changes that take place in various stages of life span and resources etc.
  • 14. HOLISTIC CONCEPT OF HEALTH  Person can perform various functions related to physical, mental, social and spiritual aspects.  William defined health as “ Health as a quality of life that enables individuals to live and serve best”

PHYSICAL WELLBEING  It is related to body structure and its physiology  Refers to the normal functioning of the tissues, organs, and system of body  There is good appetite, sound sleep and regularity of bowel and bladder  Body movement are coordinated  To know that person is fit vital signs and lab investigations etc can be done
  • 20. MENTAL WELLBEING  Mental health is related to mind and refers to normal functioning of mind and not merely, the absence of mental illness.

SOCIAL WELLBEING OR SOCIAL HEALTH  It refers to ability that enables the individual to become a whole person in the existing social structure  He is able to make lasting friendships that is satisfying  He learns from his society about socio cultural  Social health of an individual is influenced by social system of society

SPIRITUAL WELLBEING OR SPIRITUAL HEALTH  It pertains to soul or spirit of man  It refers to believe in super natural aspects of universe which help individual to seek meaning and purpose in life  It is associated with the religious belief of an individual  This gives strength and determination to face realities of life
