Computer numerical control (CNC) systems use a computer to store and perform numerical control (NC) functions with stored programs, rather than physical hardware. CNC systems can be hybrid, using computers for some functions while retaining hard-wired logic for others like feed rate generation, or straight CNC where computers perform all NC functions. Distributed numerical control (DNC) connects multiple CNC machines to a central computer through direct connections, allowing the sharing and real-time distribution of part programs between machines from a common memory.
