• Vision allows humans to perceive and understand the world surrounding them.
• Computer vision aims to duplicate the effect of human vision by electronically
Perceiving and understanding an image.
• Image capture, early processing, region extraction, region labelling, high level
identification, qualitative/quantitative conclusion is characteristics of image
understanding and computer vision problems.
• Low level image processing.
• High level image processing.
LOW LEVEL METHOD INCLUDES
• Low level methods usually use very little knowledge about the content of images.
• Low level computer vision techniques overlap almost completely with digital image
processing, which has been practiced for decades.
• Data in use : original images represented by matrices composed of brightness values
• The following sequence of processing steps is commonly recognized:
• Image Acquisition: An image is captured by a sensor (such as aTV camera) and digitized;
• Preprocessing: computer suppresses noise (image pre-processing) and maybe enhances some
object features which are relevant to understanding the image. Edge extraction is an example of
processing carried out at this stage.
• Image segmentation: computer tries to separate objects from the image background.
• Object description and classification in a totally segmented image is also understood as part of low
level image processing.
• Others: Image compression and techniques to extract information from moving scenes.
HIGH LEVEL PROCESSING
• High level processing is based on knowledge, goals, and plans of how to achieve those goals.
• pattern recognition and Artificial intelligence (AI) methods are used in many cases.
• High level computer vision tries to imitate human cognition and the ability to make decisions
according to the information contained in the image.
• Data in use: knowledge about image content - for example, object size, shape, and mutual relations
between objects in the image. High level data originate in images, but only those data which are
relevant to high-level goals are extracted, reducing the data quantity considerably
• some important concepts
• heuristic : knowledge need not be a set of defined assertions with precisely specified
domains; it may be both empirical and very vague in nature, and artifificial intelligence
calls this vague knowledge 'heuristic'. A heuristic solution might be found more quickly
than by precise and exhaustive methods, and it is ofteen the case that a good but sub-
optimal solution is adequate.
• A priori knowledge : knowledge available before the search for a problem solution starts (
for example, in analysis of music scores we have foreknowledge of the existence of sets
of five long parallel lines). A priori knowledge may ease the image understanding task.
• syntactic and semantic : come from the theory of formal languages and logic
syntax - a set of rules that enable formula to be created from symbols
semantics - concerned with formulae interpretation, i.e. finding a mapping from
formulae to some model.
THE DIGITIZED IMAGE AND ITS PROPERTIES

Basic Concepts
• A signal is a function depending on some variable with physical meaning. Signals
can be
• one-dimensional (e.g., dependent on time), two-dimensional (e.g., images
dependent on two co-ordinates in a plane), three-dimensional (e.g., describing an
object in space), higher-dimensional. A scalar function may be sufficient to
describe a monochromatic image, while vector
functions represent, for example, color images consisting of three component
colors.
• The image can be modeled by a continuous function of two or three
variables; arguments are coordinates x, y in a plane. If images change in time, a third
variable t might be added.
• The image function values correspond to the brightness at image points.The function
value can express other physical quantities as well (temperature, pressure
distribution, distance from the observer, etc.).
• The brightness integrates different optical quantities – using brightness as a basic
quantity allows us to avoid the description of the very complicated process of image
formation.
• The image on the human eye retina or on aTV camera sensor is intrinsically 2D. We
shall call such a 2D image bearing information about brightness points anintensity
image.

When 3D objects are mapped into the camera plane by perspective projection
a lot of information disappears, as such a transformation is not one-to-
one. Recognizing or reconstructing objects in a 3D scene from one image is an
ill-posed problem.Recovering information lost by perspective projection is only
one, mainly geometric, problem of computer vision.
• The second problem is how to understand image brightness. The only
information available in an intensity image is brightness of the appropriate
pixel, which is dependent on a number of independent factors such as
• object surface reflectance properties (given by the surface material,
microstructure
and marking), illumination properties, object surface orientation with respect
to a viewer and light source.

LOW LEVEL METHOD INCLUDES • Low level methods usually use very little knowledge about the content of images. • Low level computer vision techniques overlap almost completely with digital image processing, which has been practiced for decades. • Data in use : original images represented by matrices composed of brightness values • The following sequence of processing steps is commonly recognized: • Image Acquisition: An image is captured by a sensor (such as aTV camera) and digitized; • Preprocessing: computer suppresses noise (image pre-processing) and maybe enhances some object features which are relevant to understanding the image. Edge extraction is an example of processing carried out at this stage. • Image segmentation: computer tries to separate objects from the image background. • Object description and classification in a totally segmented image is also understood as part of low level image processing. • Others: Image compression and techniques to extract information from moving scenes.

HIGH LEVEL PROCESSING • High level processing is based on knowledge, goals, and plans of how to achieve those goals. • pattern recognition and Artificial intelligence (AI) methods are used in many cases. • High level computer vision tries to imitate human cognition and the ability to make decisions according to the information contained in the image. • Data in use: knowledge about image content - for example, object size, shape, and mutual relations between objects in the image. High level data originate in images, but only those data which are relevant to high-level goals are extracted, reducing the data quantity considerably
  • 5. • some important concepts • heuristic : knowledge need not be a set of defined assertions with precisely specified domains; it may be both empirical and very vague in nature, and artifificial intelligence calls this vague knowledge 'heuristic'. A heuristic solution might be found more quickly than by precise and exhaustive methods, and it is ofteen the case that a good but sub- optimal solution is adequate. • A priori knowledge : knowledge available before the search for a problem solution starts ( for example, in analysis of music scores we have foreknowledge of the existence of sets of five long parallel lines). A priori knowledge may ease the image understanding task. • syntactic and semantic : come from the theory of formal languages and logic syntax - a set of rules that enable formula to be created from symbols semantics - concerned with formulae interpretation, i.e. finding a mapping from formulae to some model.

  • 7. Basic Concepts • A signal is a function depending on some variable with physical meaning. Signals can be • one-dimensional (e.g., dependent on time), two-dimensional (e.g., images dependent on two co-ordinates in a plane), three-dimensional (e.g., describing an object in space), higher-dimensional. A scalar function may be sufficient to describe a monochromatic image, while vector functions represent, for example, color images consisting of three component colors.
  • 8. • The image can be modeled by a continuous function of two or three variables; arguments are coordinates x, y in a plane. If images change in time, a third variable t might be added. • The image function values correspond to the brightness at image points.The function value can express other physical quantities as well (temperature, pressure distribution, distance from the observer, etc.). • The brightness integrates different optical quantities – using brightness as a basic quantity allows us to avoid the description of the very complicated process of image formation. • The image on the human eye retina or on aTV camera sensor is intrinsically 2D. We shall call such a 2D image bearing information about brightness points anintensity image.
  • 9. • When 3D objects are mapped into the camera plane by perspective projection a lot of information disappears, as such a transformation is not one-to- one. Recognizing or reconstructing objects in a 3D scene from one image is an ill-posed problem.Recovering information lost by perspective projection is only one, mainly geometric, problem of computer vision. • The second problem is how to understand image brightness. The only information available in an intensity image is brightness of the appropriate pixel, which is dependent on a number of independent factors such as • object surface reflectance properties (given by the surface material, microstructure and marking), illumination properties, object surface orientation with respect to a viewer and light source.
