COMPUTER SOFTWARE
• Software is a generic term for organized collections of
computer data and instructions, often broken into two
major categories: system software that provides the
basic non-task-specific functions of the computer, and
application software which is used by users to
accomplish specific tasks.
TYPES OF
SOFTWARE
•SYSTEM SOFTWARE
•APPLICATION SOFTWARE
SYSTEM
SOFTWARE
•System software is a type of computer program
that is designed to run a computer's hardware
and application programs. If we think of the
computer system as a layered model, the system
software is the interface between the hardware
and user applications.
SYSTEM SOFTWARE EXAMPLES
Microsoft window
It consists of several families of operating systems, each of which cater to a
certain sector of the computing industry with the OS typically associated with IBM PC
compatible architecture.
DOS (Disk Operating System)
can refer to any operating system, but it is most often used as a shorthand for
MS-DOS (Microsoft disk operating system). Originally developed by Microsoft for IBM,
MS-DOS was the standard operating system for IBM-compatible personal computers.
BIOS (Basic Input / Output System)
is a regular, free software only available for Windows, belonging to the category
Software utilities with subcategory Analysis & Optimization (more specifically BIOS)
and has been created by Matthias Bockelkamp .
Linker Software
a linker or link editor is a computer program that takes one or more object files
generated by a compiler and combines them into a single executable file, library file, or
another object file.
HD sector boot software
A boot sector is a region of a hard disk, floppy disk, optical disc, or other
data storage device that contains machine code to be loaded into random-access
memory (RAM) by a computer system's built-in firmware.
APPLICATION SOFTWARE
• Applications software (also called end-user programs) include
such things as database programs, word processors, Web
browsers and spreadsheets . Applications software is a computer
program designed to perform a group of coordinated functions,
tasks, or activities for the benefit of the user . Applications may
be bundled with the computer and its system software or
published separately, and may be coded as proprietary, open-
source or university projects .
APPLICATION SOFTWARE EXAMPLES
Microsoft Office Suite
is a package of office productivity software released by Microsoft and is
available for Microsoft Windows and Macintosh operating systems. Current versions for
Windows and Macintosh is Office 2016.
Inventory management software
is a software system for tracking inventory levels, orders, sales and deliveries. It
can also be used in the manufacturing industry to create a work order, bill of
materials and other production-related documents.
Microsoft word
is a word processor developed by Microsoft. It was first released
October 25, 1983[4] under the name Multi-Tool Word for Xenix
systems.
Google Chrome
is a freeware web browser developed by Google. It was first released in
2008, for Microsoft Windows, and was later ported to Linux, macOS, iOS and
Android.
Firefox
is available for Windows, macOS and Linux operating systems, with its Firefox for
Android available for Android (formerly Firefox for mobile, it also ran on the
discontinued Firefox OS), and uses the Gecko layout engine to render web pages,
which implements current and anticipated web standards.
