1. Srrishti 2k17 was an inter-college competition conducted by School
of Science on September 12th, 2017 in SSS Shasun Jain Col-
lege,T.Nagar. The events were Mobile App Development, Pot Pourri,
Treasure Hunt and Innovative Youth Talk. Nearly 80 students from
15 Colleges participated in the competition. The cash prize of
Rs.3000, Rs.2000 and Rs. 1000 was given to the winners. The stu-

Our oceans face a rising tide of threats to

Why Paper Publications?
Publications in reputed journals is one
of the criteria often used by research
and scientific organizations to evaluate
the potential and excellence of a re-
searcher in recruitment, promotions,
research fellowships, expert assign-
ments, awards, etc. In combination
with the number of publications
and the number of first author-
ships, the journal ranking is of-
ten used as a metric to evaluate
the merit of a researcher.
What is Citations?
Journals employ several methods
to increase its IF. One straight
forward way to increase JIF is by
publishing more of review articles
which are generally cited more than
research reports.
A "citation" is the way you tell your
readers that certain material in your
work came from another source. It
also gives your readers the information
necessary to find that source again,
including:
 information about the author
 the title of the work
 the name and location of the com-
pany that published your copy of the
source
 the date your copy was published
 the page numbers of the material
you are borrowing
Articles that address controversial
issues also get high citation, even
though they contribute little or noth-
ing to scientific progress. Hence, it is
highly controversial when the use of
JIF is extended to evaluate the merit of
papers therein and/or to assess an
individual researcher.
Where Impact Factors used?
Impact factor is commonly used to
evaluate the relative importance of a
journal within its field and to measure
the frequency with which the ―average
article‖ in a journal has been cited in a
particular time period. There are a
number of journal ranking systems
today, but the oldest and most influen-
tial is the Journal Impact Factor (JIF)
devised by Eugene Garfield, the foun-
der of the Institute for Scientific Infor-
mation which is now owned by Thom-
son Reuters
How it was calculated
IFs are calculated for those journals
that are indexed in the Journal Citation
Reports (JCR) of Thomson Reuters.
Most often, the 2-year IF is
used for journal ranking and it
is calculated annually. The IF of
a journal, in a given year, is the
average number of citations
received per paper published
in that journal during the pre-
ceding 2 years. For example, if
a journal has an IF of 3 in 2017,
then its papers published in
2016 and 2015 received three
citations each on an average in
2017. The 2017 IF of a journal
is calculated as follows:
JIF2017= A / B
where
 A = the number of times
the articles published in that
journal in 2015 and 2016,
were cited by articles in
indexed journals during
2017.
 B = the total number of
―citable items‖ published by
that journal in 2015 and
2016.
JIF2017 is calculated only after
all of the 2017 publications
have been processed by the
indexing agency. Hence, a new
journal will not get its IF until
it has been indexed for at least
3 years.
Since the 2-year citation win-
dow is often too short a pe-
riod for adequate citation, the
JCR also includes a 5-year IF.
The IF is highly discipline-
dependent and hence one
cannot compare journals
across disciplines on the basis
of their relative IFs.
Measuring instruments
There are various tools and
methods upon which to meas-
ure the impact of an individual
or their scholarship.
H-Index: The h-index is an
index to quantify an individual’s
scientific research output
There are several databases
(Web of Science, Scopus, and
Google Scholar) that will pro-
vide an h-index for an individ-
ual based on publications in-
dexed in the tools.
Citation Analysis: Is the
process whereby the impact or
"quality" of an article is as-
sessed by counting the number
of times other authors men-
tion it in their work.
UIC has access to a number
of resources that identify
cited works including: Web of
Science, Scopus, and Google
Scholar.
Altmetrics: is a quantitative
measure of the quality and
quantity of attention that a
scholarly work is receiving
through social media, cita-
tions, and article downloads.
Guidelines
Following are the guidelines
to help you in the writing
process:
 make sure your proposed
article matches the journal’s
scope
 read carefully the Guide-
lines for Authors provided
by the Journal
 familiarize yourself with the
specific requirements as to
length, formatting, referenc-
ing, etc., and follow them
meticulously
 Try to find a colleague who
has published in, or has
been a reviewer for, your
targeted journal. Their
experience may prove in-
valuable in assisting you
shape your article
 Read plenty of articles from
the journal you intend to
publish in and learn from
other people’s style.
Conclusion
A major problem is that the
IF is owned by a private com-
pany, that has strong financial
interests in keeping the IF
working as it is. In most part
of western countries, they
realized, journal impact fac-
tors cannot be used even for
an approximate estimate of
real article impact, and would
be unbelievably misleading as
evaluation parameters‖. But
our system, still strongly rely
on these metrics... it really
doesn’t matter for those
believe in themselves, as
Henry Ford says ―Quality
means doing it right when
no one is looking.‖
