The document discusses the 4th and 5th generations of computers. The 4th generation emerged in the 1970s using microprocessors and VLSI technology, making computers more powerful, compact and affordable. Examples included IBM 4143 and Apple II. The 5th generation is still in development and aims to develop true artificial intelligence using techniques like quantum computing and nanotechnology to give computers human-like intelligence and the ability to understand natural language.
2. 4th generation computer
After 1971 the fourth generation computers were built. The
fourth generation computers were the extension of third
generation technology. The fourth generation computers emerged
with development of the VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration). With
the help of VLSI technology microprocessor came into existence.
The computers were designed by using microprocessor, as
thousands of integrated circuits were built onto a single silicon
chip. What in the first generation filled an entire room could now
fit in the palm of the hand. The fourth generation computers
became more powerful, compact, reliable and affordable. As a
result, they give rise to personal computer (PC) revolution.
3. Characteristics of 4th gen
computer
1) The fourth generation computers have microprocessor-based
systems.
2) They are the cheapest among all the computer generation.
3) The speed, accuracy and reliability of the computers were improved
in fourth generation computers.
4) Many high-level languages were developed in the fourth generation
such as COBOL, FORTRAN, BASIC, PASCAL and C language.
5) A Further refinement of input/output devices was developed.
6) Networking between the systems was developed.
4. Examples of 4th gen.
computer
IBM 4143
STAR 1000
DEC 10
APPLE II
5. Advantages….
More powerful and reliable than previous generations.
Small in size
Fast processing power with less power consumption
Fan for heat discharging and thus to keep cold.
No air conditioning required.
Totally general purpose DO YOU KNOW ?
Microprocessors contain thousands
of integrated circuits on a single
chip.
6. Commercial production
Less need of repair.
Cheapest among all generations
All types of High level languages can be
used in this type of computers
7. Disadvantages…
The latest technology is required for manufacturing of
Microprocessors
The used softwares are very critical.
9. 5th generation computers
Fifth generation computers are in developmental stage
which is based on the artificial intelligence. The goal of
the fifth generation is to develop the device which could
respond to natural language input and are capable of
learning and self-organization. Quantum computation and
molecular and nanotechnology will be used in this
technology. So we can say that the fifth generation
computers will have the power of human intelligence.
10. CHARACTERISTICS
1) The fifth generation computers will use super large
scale integrated chips.
2) They will have artificial intelligence.
3) They will be able to recognize image and graphs.
4) Fifth generation computer aims to be able to solve highly
complex problem including decision making, logical reasoning.
5) They will be able to use more than one CPU for faster
processing speed.
6) Fifth generation computers are intended to work with
natural language.
11. Advantages of Fifth Gen. of Computer
1} These computers are much faster than other generation
computers.
2} It is easier to repair these computers.
3} These computers are much smaller in size than other
generation computers
4} They are portable and easy to handle.
5} Development of true artificial intelligence.
6} Advancement in Parallel Processing.
7} Advancement in Superconductor technology.
12. Disadvantages of Fifth Gen. of
Computer
1} They tend to be sophisticated and complex tools.
2} hey can give more power to companies to watch what you
are doing and even allow them to infect your computer.
DO YOU KNOW ?
In may 1977, an IBM super
computer called DEEP BLUE
defeated world chess
champion, Gary kasparov in a
chess match
13. Applications for Fifth-Generation
Computers
Intelligent robots that could ‘see’ their environment (visual
input – for example, a video camera) and could be
programmed to carry out certain tasks without step-by-
step instructions. The robot should be able to decide for
itself how the task should be accomplished, based on the
observations it made of its environment.
DO YOU KNOW ?
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE is
a branch of computer science
that show human intelligence and
behavior. It includes self learning
robots, voice recognition and art
of making decision.
14. 4th gen vs 5th gen computer
4th gen computer 5th gen computer
Fourth generation programming
languages are designed for a specific
application domain
fifth generation programming languages
are deigned to allow computers to solve
problems by themselves.
4GL programmers need to specify the
algorithm in order to solve a problem
5GL programmers only need to define
the problem and constraints that need
to be satisfied.
4GL are mainly used in data processing
and database handling applications
5GL are mostly used for problem solving
in all field.
4th generation of computers are acts
as user define computers
5th generation computers are act as
automatic computers by means it doing
its works automatically
15. These computers use LSI and VLSI
technologies.
These computers will be using Ultra
Large Scale Integration (ULSI)
technology.
Example - Apple Macintosh,
IBM PC
Example- Voice Recognition
