I think it is very important to be a part of the decision when it comes to the technology that will be in my classroom. I think all teachers need to be knowledgeable about the technology in their classrooms so they can teach it appropriately to their students. It is not fair for students’ learning to suffer based on the fact that a teacher does not know what he/she is doing. I, as the teacher, should be included in the decision making process. I am the one true person who knows my students best as students. If I didn’t know what technology was being placed in my classroom, I wouldn’t be as knowledgeable as to how to use it or what its uses were. As the teacher, I am the one who needs to see my students succeed and strive within the classroom. I am the person who knows what technology my students need to learn how to use depending on their age, grade level and ability to understand. I placed many of the items I chose in my classrooms for particular reasons. For example, I bought software that was educational for elementary students. I would not have bought this for high school level or even middle school. The programs I bought were child friendly and fun to use, while being educational. I believe that if a teacher is not involved in the decision process it can make things more difficult on the teacher. They will have to teach themselves how to use technology that may be too advanced for them and their students. Also, a teacher not involved may feel bitter as though she/he was forced to have this technology in the classroom. As teachers, we are already forced to change so many of our habits that we know work to form to the government standards. There is no reason why we have to conform to what is in our classrooms to make others happy. Teachers should definitely be allowed to help make a decision on the technology being used in their classroom because technology is going to play a huge role in our students lives as they grow and learn.
