Compare Plato and Aristotle\'s philosophies of mathematics and relate their views to their understanding of form. Locate a weakness of each view. Solution Plato and Aristotle are both great philosophers in their own regard. Both agree that the world has a purpose, and that it’s not just an accident. Even though Aristotle was a student of Plato, each philosopher develops his own view on things and a specific way of solving a particular problem. For example, Plato and Aristotle have quite different views regarding life. Plato thinks that we are able to obtain the same kind of certainty in rules of behavior as with mathematics. According to him the ultimate vision of the Form of the Good will provide a single standard for deciding practical questions. Unfortunately only the few individuals who can make the hard journey through the Cave will be able to give a solution for all questions of value. Aristotle does not have the same view – according to him, we should not ask for more certainty than the subject matter allows. A normal person is able to make good decisions and to live a good life; one need not be an expert in ethical knowledge to practice it. Although the two philosophers are quite similar in the problems they deal with, they go about doing it in a very separate and distinguished manner. Most of Plato’s philosophy is centered on the Forms, which is his solution for pretty much everything. Aristotle, on the other hand, does not have one unifying solution. He prefers to tackle each problem separately, work it out as best as he can, and give an answer. And yet both of them deserve utmost credit for at least one thing: making people think. That is very important, especially in today’s society where people prefer to reason things out with guns and fighting instead of thinking of a solution.

Well, what do you think philosophy is? Most people can’t answer this question. It’s too abstract. It’s also controversial. Philosophers themselves can’t agree on any answer. Sure, the name “philosophy” derives from the Greek for “love of wisdom”, but what’s that? There has been a long and glorious history of people called philosophers, but they talk about all kinds of topics in all kinds of ways. It is not clear what, if anything, they have in common that makes them all philosophers.
Still, though many philosophers would dispute what I say, I will give you one model of philosophy. For me, philosophy is defined by a goal and a method.
Philosophy’s goal is nothing less than a systematic world view. Other fields study particular kinds of things. Philosophy asks how it all fits together. For example, if you want to learn about bodies, take a course in physics or biology. If you want to learn about minds, take a course in psychology. But if you want to learn about how minds are related to bodies, or how physics is related to psychology, then philosophy (of mind) is for you. Similarly, economics, political science, and art and music courses study different values (welfare, justice, and beauty). Then moral philosophers ask how these values are similar or different, when one may be traded off against another, and where any of these values fit into the physical world. Again, historians try to discover knowledge of the past and astronomers try to discover knowledge of stars and planets, but only philosophers ask what makes any of these beliefs knowledge, and how (or whether) we can have any knowledge at all. Such philosophical questions are very abstract, but that is what enables them to cover so many different fields at once.
This goal also means that you can study anything under the name of philosophy. Philosophy encompasses subfields called philosophy of religion, of law, of economics, of biology, of physics, of mathematics, of computers, of psychology, of art, of music, of literature, and so on. Any and all of these topics can be studied in a philosophical way when one asks how they are related to each other in an overall world view.
When such disparate topics are raised, conflicts and paradoxes are bound to arise. One famous example is the paradox of freedom: Science, including psychology, leads us to believe that (1) Every act is determined by a prior cause. Law and common practices of blaming and punishing wrongdoers then lead us to believe that (2) Some acts are free. But the very definition of “free” suggests that (3) Nothing that is determined is free. Unfortunately, (1)-(3) cannot all be true, so any world view that includes all three of these claims is incoherent.
Paradoxes like this are both loved and hated by philosophers. Philosophers love them for their stimulation but hate them for their incoherence, so philosophers try hard to get rid of paradoxes. One prevalent way to resolve paradox.

Ethics is the study of the good life. There are two components of this study.
1. What does it mean to live a good life in the realm of human activity, thought, and action?
2. What does it mean to have a good life? What do I desire, and how can I bring that
ultimately good life about in my own life?
The responses to these aspects of life are numerous throughout the history of philosophy. Some philosophers
have focused on the actual aspects of life that relate to these questions and how you can attain a high level of
ethicality. Others have attempted to ground ethics in something universal that would make demands on all
humans. Finally, some hav e taken up a specific ethical viewpoint and then used that viewpoint to analyze the
goodness or badness of ethical issues in various fields of study and social life.
Most ethical philosophers believ e that there is, or are, universal ethical principles that make demands on all
humans. This is extremely important and it is where we will begin. It is common folk wisdom that there are no
universal ethical standards. It is puzzling for many philosophers to hear students claim that there are “no
universal truths” or that you cannot judge the practices of another culture because “what they do is right for
them.” Hopefully as you hav e engaged this course you have been exposed to the fallacious nature of this
thinking. If you were to consistently hold this position, it could lead to horrible outcomes for the individual. What
is more, it is often impossible for those students to avoid their own ethical universals when they feel they have
been treated unfairly or violently.
For example, if you were to be robbed at gunpoint, and you were an ethical relativist, you would not be able to
fundamentally justify calling the police for help. Of course, you might say that it was his ethical truth to rely on
the police when someone tries to rob another person. Howev er, the person doing the robbing would be making
the ethical claim that it is acceptable to steal from others using violent means. The pure relativist would have to
say that the ethical truth for the thief has just as much reality and import as the truth of the person being
robbed. Should the person being robbed then not call the police because robbery is truth for the robber?
Almost all humans feel a deep sense of violation and injustice when they undergo a traumatic robbery. They

Step 1 The longest continuous chain of carbon atoms is the parent chain. If there is no longest
chain because two or more chains are the same longest length, then the parent chain is defined as

Piaget\'s Theory of Moral Development
Piaget (1932) was principally interested not in what children do (i.e. in whether they break rules
or not) but in what they think. In other words he was interested in children’s moral reasoning.
Piaget was interested in three main aspects of children’s understanding of moral issues. They

suggested two main types of moral thinking:
Heteronomous morality (moral realism)
Autonomous morality (moral relativism)
Heteronomous Morality (5-9yrs)
The stage of heteronomous morality is also known asmoral realism– morality imposed from the
outside. Children regard morality as obeying other people\'s rules and laws, which cannot be
changed. They accept that all rules are made by some authority figure (e.g. parents, teacher,
God), and that breaking the rules will lead to immediate and severe punishment (immanent
justice). The function of any punishment is to make the guilty suffer in that the severity of the
punishment should be related to severity of wrong-doing (expiatory punishment).
During this stage children consider rules as being absolute and unchanging, i.e. \'divine like\'.
They think that rules cannot be changed and have always been the same as they are now.
Behaviour is judged as “bad\" in terms of the observable consequences, regardless on the
intentions or reasons for that behaviour. Therefore, a large amount of accidental damage is
viewed as worse than a small amount of deliberate damage.
Research Findings
Piaget (1932) told the children stories that embodied a moral theme and then asked for their
opinion. Here are two examples:

Ethics is the study of the good life. There are two components of this study.
1. What does it mean to live a good life in the realm of human activity, thought, and action?
2. What does it mean to have a good life? What do I desire, and how can I bring that
ultimately good life about in my own life?
The responses to these aspects of life are numerous throughout the history of philosophy. Some philosophers
have focused on the actual aspects of life that relate to these questions and how you can attain a high level of
ethicality. Others have attempted to ground ethics in something universal that would make demands on all
humans. Finally, some hav e taken up a specific ethical viewpoint and then used that viewpoint to analyze the
goodness or badness of ethical issues in various fields of study and social life.
Most ethical philosophers believ e that there is, or are, universal ethical principles that make demands on all
humans. This is extremely important and it is where we will begin. It is common folk wisdom that there are no
universal ethical standards. It is puzzling for many philosophers to hear students claim that there are “no
universal truths” or that you cannot judge the practices of another culture because “what they do is right for
them.” Hopefully as you hav e engaged this course you have been exposed to the fallacious nature of this
thinking. If you were to consistently hold this position, it could lead to horrible outcomes for the individual. What
is more, it is often impossible for those students to avoid their own ethical universals when they feel they have
been treated unfairly or violently.
For example, if you were to be robbed at gunpoint, and you were an ethical relativist, you would not be able to
fundamentally justify calling the police for help. Of course, you might say that it was his ethical truth to rely on
the police when someone tries to rob another person. Howev er, the person doing the robbing would be making
the ethical claim that it is acceptable to steal from others using violent means. The pure relativist would have to
say that the ethical truth for the thief has just as much reality and import as the truth of the person being
robbed. Should the person being robbed then not call the police because robbery is truth for the robber?
Almost all humans feel a deep sense of violation and injustice when they undergo a traumatic robbery. They

Heteronomous morality (moral realism)
Autonomous morality (moral relativism)
Heteronomous Morality (5-9yrs)
The stage of heteronomous morality is also known asmoral realism– morality imposed from the
outside. Children regard morality as obeying other people\'s rules and laws, which cannot be
changed. They accept that all rules are made by some authority figure (e.g. parents, teacher,
God), and that breaking the rules will lead to immediate and severe punishment (immanent
justice). The function of any punishment is to make the guilty suffer in that the severity of the
punishment should be related to severity of wrong-doing (expiatory punishment).
During this stage children consider rules as being absolute and unchanging, i.e. \'divine like\'.
They think that rules cannot be changed and have always been the same as they are now.
Behaviour is judged as “bad\" in terms of the observable consequences, regardless on the
intentions or reasons for that behaviour. Therefore, a large amount of accidental damage is
viewed as worse than a small amount of deliberate damage.
Research Findings
Piaget (1932) told the children stories that embodied a moral theme and then asked for their
opinion. Here are two examples:

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Solution Plato and Aristotle are both great philosophers in their own regard. Both agree that the world has a purpose, and that it’s not just an accident. Even though Aristotle was a student of Plato, each philosopher develops his own view on things and a specific way of solving a particular problem. For example, Plato and Aristotle have quite different views regarding life. Plato thinks that we are able to obtain the same kind of certainty in rules of behavior as with mathematics. According to him the ultimate vision of the Form of the Good will provide a single standard for deciding practical questions. Unfortunately only the few individuals who can make the hard journey through the Cave will be able to give a solution for all questions of value. Aristotle does not have the same view – according to him, we should not ask for more certainty than the subject matter allows. A normal person is able to make good decisions and to live a good life; one need not be an expert in ethical knowledge to practice it. Although the two philosophers are quite similar in the problems they deal with, they go about doing it in a very separate and distinguished manner. Most of Plato’s philosophy is centered on the Forms, which is his solution for pretty much everything. Aristotle, on the other hand, does not have one unifying solution. He prefers to tackle each problem separately, work it out as best as he can, and give an answer. And yet both of them deserve utmost credit for at least one thing: making people think. That is very important, especially in today’s society where people prefer to reason things out with guns and fighting instead of thinking of a solution
