Abstract
Metamaterials have been a subject of increasing interest due to their ability to
manipulate the flow of EM waves. We analyse the mechanism by which
metamaterials are able to exhibit this property which is exploited to develop the
Harry Potter esque invisibility cloaks. We briefly discuss the whole new branch of
optics called Transformation Optics developed for this purpose, and comment on the
extent to which these materials can cloak.
Introduction
Metamaterials are artificially designed materials which have properties that cannot
be found in natural materials.[1] They were first theoretically proposed by
Veselago in 1968 as materials having negative permeability and permittivity. This
is why these are also known as Left Handed Materials (LHM) or Negative Refractive
Index materials (NIM). The first discovery in this domain was done by Sir Pendry
et al in 1996, who discovered a wire medium with negative permittivity. This was
followed by other significant discoveries like negative permeability by Pendry in
1999 and LHM by Sir Smith in 2001.
Metamaterial structures can either be periodic (homogenous) or non periodic
(inhomogenous). Their properties depend on the construction and arrangement of

In 1781, while the countries were still independent, the first constitution, the Articles
of
Confederation, was made officially valid. From this the Congress of Confederation
was formed, where there was a single legislature and no president or judicial branch.
Though these powers were very limited Congress, with the forming of the Articles of
Confederation, now held the power to manage wars and govern foreign affairs.
In 1786 a Constitution convention was called by Alexander Hamilton to discuss the
need for a stronger central government in America to remain stable. After the
Confederation
Congress endorsed the idea of a stronger government in 1787, an invite was sent to all
thirteen states to send delegates to a meeting held in Philadelphia to discuss the
matter of a stronger government. There fifty five delegates attended, representing all
thirteen states except
Rhode Island for they did not agree with the idea. After this, Congress gave the
delegates the task of amending the Articles of Confederation. After trying to figure
out the many different proposals, they began to deliberate proposals for a whole new
form of government.
Throughout the summer of 1787 intense debates went on threatening to throw off
the proceedings, but in the end a plan was developed establishing three branches of
national government executive, legislative and judicial. With this, checks and
balances were put in place and specific powers and responsibilities were distributed.
Out of all the delegates that attended James Madison was the only one who attended
every meeting taking note of the debates and discussions. His journal in which he
kept these notes were secret until after his death. In 1837 his journal and several
other papers of his were bought by the government for
30,000 dollars. It was not until 1840 when it was published. The final text of the
Constitution was drafted in September of 1787 by the Convention s five member
Committee of Style, consisting of Alexander Hamilton, James, William Samuel
Johnson, Governor Morris, and Rufus King. On September 17, thirty nine of the fifty
three delegates signed the final text of the Constitution, the first being George
Washington.

Coming Into The Math Activity Essay
Coming into the math activity, I was expecting the activity to go smoothly. I
figured the students would be able to solve multiplication problems easily and
would need very little, if any help. I figured they would be able to follow
instructions. That s exactly what happened for the third graders, but for the
younger ones we had to switch to addition instead of multiplication. Overall, it was
a very pleasant activity and it taught me a lot about how children today are learning
when it comes to mathematics. Kids Count threw us a big curveball when they told
us we wouldn t be getting only third graders because after all, our activity was
designed for third graders. We decided to do addition for younger students instead.
For one group, we had to implement that. For another group, we had all third graders

world to believe that a nuclear war was soon on its way. The evolution of nuclear
testing and the Cuban missile crisis indicated how far each state was ready to go to

Unfulfilled Dreams and Deferring Closure
In her critical essay, Dream, Deferral and Closure in The Women of Brewster Place
Jill Matus writes about the theme of unfulfilled dreams as it is portrayed in Gloria
Naylor s The Women of Brewster Place. Matus s main argument about this theme can
be summarized as her belief that Naylor uses the dream described at the end of the
novel as an out an end that allows her to not commit to one conclusion or other; a
deferral of closure, if you will. A reader might ask what the purpose of such a
noncommittal ending is as it relates to the novel as a whole. Matus offers some
answers to this question by claiming that the text and, more symbolically, the lives
of the characters and setting of the novel are prolonged by the deferred ending
because of the presentation of dream and in turn the dream affirms and perpetuates
the life of the street and characters. In other words, Matus argument could be
interpreted as the belief that the dream as it is presented in the end of the novel
leaves a sense of hope for an otherwise decaying setting and lives.
Personally, I agree with Matus s conclusions about how the ending works for the
novel even though it is not really an ending at all. I was convinced of this
argument based on how she uses Langston Hughes s poem Harlem about deferred
dreams to illustrate how the end of the novel is Naylor s way of reimagining the
same message of the poem. In the poem, Hughes writes about the fate of dreams
that are deferred or unfulfilled. He writes that these dreams dry up like raisins in
the sun, fester like sores, stink like rotten meat, crust over like a syrupy sweet.
Matus writes that she is interested in looking at the way in which Naylor rethinks the
poem in her novel s attention to dreams and desires and deferral, and then to consider
the implications of her vision in terms of the novel s sensitivity to history and social
context (50). The unfulfillment of dreams and desires are two major recurring themes
in the novel and what makes the ending of the novel so interesting is that it is a
narrative illustration of these themes. The unassuming reader is actually left
unfulfilled because the seeming conclusion to the novel is taken away
