3. Introduction
Hong Kong is a special administrative region of
the People’s Republic of China. As such, it has a
special legal status, stemming from its history as a
former British colony until 1997 and the following
handover of sovereignty to China. After the shift of
sovereignty from England to China, Hong Kong
preserved its autonomy except in the areas of military
defense and diplomatic relations (CIA, 2014).
