We use comparative to compare two things or people which are different. E.g: An elephant is bigger than a mouse .
1-syllable adjectives: add -er to the adjective My sister is much tall er than me. It's cold er today than it was yesterday. Note : If the word ends: consonant-vowel-consonant , then the last consonant is usually doubled in the comparative. Examples: big-bi gg er, fat-fa tt er, hot-ho tt er .
2 or more syllable adjectives: use “ more” with the unchanged adjective . The shops are always more crowded just before Christmas. Is there anything more boring than watching a bad movie? My sister is more careful with her writing than I am with mine.
We use superlative to say that something or someone in a group is unique. EXAMPLE: The Ferrari Sports Car is the fastest car in the world.
1-syllable adjectives: add -est to the adjective (plus the ) My sister is the tallest in our family. Yesterday was the coldest day of the year so far. Note: If the word ends: consonant-vowel-consonant , then the last consonant is usually doubled in the superlative. Examples: big-bi gg est, fat-fa tt est, hot-ho tt est .
Adjectives with 3 or more syllables : use the most with the unchanged adjective Some people think that Russian is the most difficult language. Albert Einstein was the most intelligent person in history. My most enjoyable class is English. You are the most irritating person I have ever met!
EXCEPTIONS SPELLING USE YOUR MEMORY !! One-syllable Adjectives One single vowel One single consonant E.g : fat- fa tt er-fattest / thin-thi nn er-thi nn est ADJECTIVES COMPARATIVE SUPERLATIVE Two-syllable adjectives ending with: -Y, -LE, -ER, -OW ADJ+-ER + THAN Eg: happy- happ i er * simple-simpler narrow-narrower * In adj. ending with –Y , the –Y changes to –I .
