1. Compare two or more things, people or places.

2.  Form of comparatives:
 We use –er for comparative of one- syllable
adjectives.
Small smaller
High higher
Young younger
Cold colder

3.  If a word ends in one –e, we normally drop the –e
before –er.
White whiter
Large larger

4.  If a word end-s in a consonant + -y, we change
the –y to –i before –er.
Happy happier
Easy easier
Carry carrier

5.  We do not change –y to –i after a vowel.
Pray prayer
Grey greyer

6.  If a one-syllable word ends in one vowel + one
consonant, we double the final consonant before
–er.
Sit sitter
Drop dropper
Big bigger
Fat fatter

7.  But we don’t double –y, -w or –x at the end of
words.

8.  Adjectives of 3 or more syllables take MORE in
the comparative.
Exciting more exciting

9.  A few other two sillables adjectives also take –er.
