In this hands-on workshop, Justin Lamb will demonstrate how the Guidebook's platform is helping higher education institutions around the world to increase student engagement by deploying apps for events ranging from orientation and graduation, to departmental meetings and alumni events. In addition, each attendee will be able to create their own mobile guide which can be downloaded directly to their personal device.
Opening keynote
Speaker: Simon Barrable, deputy principal - innovations, operational and strategic planning, Portsmouth College.
This session will give delegates a brief overview of Portsmouth College and the journey we have been on. It will explain how the introduction of 1-2-1 devices for all staff and students drove a transformation in our use of technology in teaching and learning.
It will show how staff (and students) have been digitally upskilled through this change and the way we defined and treated it as a whole college learning journey.
Twitter is widely used by undergraduate students, and this presentation offers a case study of its adoption to support students on three undergraduate modules. It considers the use of Twitter in-class to facilitate discussion, feedback and collaboration, particularly in large-group teaching, where discussion can be difficult to initiate and make inclusive. It also shows how Twitter provides great opportunities to extend traditional classroom boundaries, considering two ways in which this is so. First, it offers a replacement to email communication that promotes more collaborative, dialogue-based interaction, closer to that which occurs within the face-to-face classroom environment. Second, in so doing, it provides enhanced opportunities for continuous student feedback and intervention-based support. In short, we will see how Twitter encourages student engagement within and between classes, promoting students’ self-led, peer-supported learning.

How National Wildlife Federation Uses Online Community to Drive Offline ActionSmall World Labs
Confronting today’s environmental challenges, such as climate change and water sustainability, requires the environmental movement to respond with an unprecedented level of creativity and energy. However, command and control campaigns that are centrally-organized and pushed via grassroot methods, are not sufficient to unleash the scale of response needed to be successful.
In this webinar (http://www.smallworldlabs.com/learn/webinars/nwf) we took a look into a focused NWF online community that allows members to connect with one another and take action on campaigns and local environmental sustainability projects. Courtney Cochran from NWF and Lindsay Razzaz from Small World Labs walked through what was learned during the buildout of this community, as well as some of the technological tools introduced and measurable results achieved throughout the process.
Queensland Speaking Tour: Learnings from the UKHelen Milner
Slides from speaking tour of Queensland in partnership with the Queensland Government. Digital exclusion denies people access to services, communication, savings, and inclusion in today's society. Tinder Foundation has supported almost 2 million people to cross the digital divide. These slides are a collection of various slides presented at a number of different speeches - so it's not one presentation, it's many.

The digital divide and civic tech (TICTec 2016, Helen Milner)Helen Milner
Civic tech can't make the impact it needs to if those working in the sector don't understand that more than half of the world's population doesn't use the internet. Blending my knowledge of digital exclusion, digital inclusion and the digital divide, and my time on the Speaker's Commission for Digital Democracy, this speech asks some difficult questions about how we can work in partnership to make real impact for the people who need better democracies and better lives.
Australia: Leave Nobody Behind: speaking tour oct nov 2015Helen Milner
In Oct and November 2015 I spend 5 days speaking in 4 Australian cities (Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, and Brisbane) and gave 7 speeches. I helped launched the Australian National Year of Digital Inclusion. This slide deck brings together the best slides from the tour so that people can see them and enjoy them.
Digital inclusion, housing technology & innovation (July 2015)Helen Milner
With over 4m people who live in social housing also lacking the basic digital skills to live well in today's society, we really do need to work together to do something about it. Closing the digital divide will help people gain jobs, save money, and to feel more connected with family, friends and with their community. Tinder Foundation has over 5 years experience of working with the housing sector and this presentation pulls together key insight as well as examples of good practice.
Democracy & inclusion (copenhagen) may 2015 (helen milner)Helen Milner
Digital democracy is the new kind of digital exclusion. At Tinder Foundation we have helped over 1.3 million people to gain basic digital skills and to close a bit more of the digital divide. Invited to speak at this conference in Copenhagen to share global lessons in digital inclusion, digital democracy and helping civic society and Governments to empower more people to take part in their services.
“Digital democracy” helen milner digital leaders annual lecture 24 february 2015Helen Milner
My speech at the Digital Leaders Annual Lecture in February 2015 about Digital Democracy. Slides have notes of the full speech. This is about people and democracy more than technology. I talk about social media, the Arab Spring, the crowdsourced constitution in Iceland, and the Net Party in Argentina. I talk about the findings of the UK House of Common's Speaker's Commission on Digital Democracy - as a Commissioner. Not radical but perhaps a very quiet and polite revolution.
Evaluation Findings from Digital Deal Challenge Fund - Social Housing & Digit...Helen Milner
The UK Government invested over £400,000 on 12 Digital Deal Challenge Fund projects to establish best practice and lessons for social/public housing providers looking to introduce digital inclusion programmes. Our ambition is to help 100% of the UK population to use the internet to benefit their lives; 9.5 million people don't have basic internet skills in the UK and around 4 million of these people live in social housing. This presentation was first done for the Social Digital Research Symposium in London 22nd October 2014

Measuring the impact of digital inclusion at scale (SHLB May 2014)Helen Milner
My presentation at SHLB May 2014, describing the evaluation metrics and methodologies we use at TInder Foundation and UK online centres. Ranging from: large scale data collection from our MOOC Learn My Way; online and telephone surveys (in the field 52 weeks a year); and deep dive evaluation and volumetrics. Using these three methodologies we've proven that we've saved the UK Government at least £232.4m (more than $1bn) in the past three years - proving digital inclusion does help the bottom line for countries struggling with recession.
Business Case for Digital Inclusion & Social Housing 8 Feb 2014Helen Milner

Showing the massive impact of putting services online as well as making sure customers and citizens can use them through local action & elearning/online learning or MOOCs. World class solutions for a hyper local problem.
Getting Tenants Online: Digital Inclusion & Social HousingHelen Milner
Many people who live in social housing (public housing) are on low income or older making them much more likely to lack basic online skills. They are also likely to benefit from online savings, and will need to interact with Government online too. I've been working with Housing Associations for three years advising on how to help tenants to get those digital skills they need. Some information about the Digital Deal programme - £400,000 grants for social housing. And Stats and facts about Housing & Digital Inclusion.
Tackling Health Inequalities and Digital ExclusionHelen Milner
As more and more health information and health services go online it is important to focus on making sure people who suffer from health inequalities, and who are also digitally excluded, don't get left behind. With a £1m programme from NHS Englamd, we're at the start of a programme to join the dots.

• Surveys – online and phone
• Impact measures – local evaluation and
nationally assessed/replicated
13. Top down: Can we help drive
more general informal learning?
Bottom up: Our learners want to
learn more, can you help us?
14. eReading Rooms Pilot
September 2012 – February 2013
• To bring informal learning to those who
wouldn’t normally access it
• Making learning available in friendly, familiar
locations in communities
• Using new technology to open up the whole
world of learning both in community venues
and beyond
• Not a good name, and only a little bit about
‘reading’
17. Findings
• Learner-led approaches
• Hyper-local community partners and places
• Role of volunteers
• Technology is important
• The Networked Effect
18. Learner-led Approaches
• All pilot partners used learner-led approaches to
make learning relevant to non-traditional learners
• For some, learners led the creation of the whole
curriculum
– “How to pack a suitcase”
• For others, tutors designed the curriculum around
learner interests:
– Internet classes based on exploring the local area
– Reading via a Newspaper Club
• Ablended learningmix of practical demonstrations,
one-to-one tuition, online resources and group
sessions to ensure learning was exciting and
relevant
19. Hyper-local community partners/places
• Friendly, hyper-local and welcoming places
was vital to the success of all the projects
• Places where people already are: day service
centres, mosques, cafes, Children Centres,
village halls
• Places where the learning topic is more
relevant: kitchen, gardens, parks, local streets
21. Technology is important
• Technology is still motivating as a subject to learn:
– 16m lack basic internet skills, 72% from C2DE
– Makes learning attractive for some who have resisted all
adult learning in the past
• Mobile devices take relevant learning resources into
the learning location: kitchen (soup), allotment
(gardening), Children’s Centre (family literacy learning),
Traveler’s Homes
• Mobile devices disguise more frightening subjects:
Reading ‘by stealth’ at newspaper club, family learning
• Curated web content brings the world of learning into
the learning location: MyLearningZone, as well as
YouTube, VideoJug, partners’ own content
23. National Co-ordination:
the OCF Networked Effect
• Beyond just sharing good practice, we:
– discoverinnovation happening at a local level
– seed it, by helping local partners to evolve, share
and shape their ideas
– and scale it, by amplifying it across the network of
partners to deliver more, with faster adoption of
new methods, and deeper impact.
• A three times multiplier on what would have
happened without the OCF Support
• It’s a way of working
24. We began by helping:
• Learning in community places about how
to use technology and the internet
We piloted:
• Learning in community places about
anything via the internet
