Connect-Ability
Charlotte Self, Digital Engagement Librarian
Leeds Library and Information Service
• We were awarded £10,000 to support 200 learners.
• Engage housebound and disabled people in Leeds with ICT.
• Buy tablets with 3G/4G connectivity and use these to provide training and
support for people with disabilities, their carers, volunteers and staff from
other organisations that work with people with disabilities.
• Introduce a lending scheme to enable our target audience to borrow the
tablets to use outside of the supported sessions.
• We approached Library At Home Service users and their
volunteers for the loaning scheme. Staff and volunteers
delivered learning sessions.
• We worked with different groups of people with disabilities
across Leeds to deliver group sessions e.g. Paperworks,
Health for All, DREAM.
• Started off using Learn My Way but switched to different
approach following feedback from learners.
…
Molly
• Molly is 90 years old and lives alone in Bramley since her husband died.
• Only this year her health has meant she’s unable to walk the mile uphill to
Bramley library.
• She learnt how to use a laptop several years ago but hardly used it.
Molly
• She quickly took to the iPad and used it for reading eBooks, playing
solitaire, searching the internet and watching iPlayer.
• Her favourite thing was using FaceTime to speak to her granddaughter in
Australia.
Learning and outcomes
• Challenging delivery model.
• Further strengthened our relationship with Tinder Foundation.
• Other library authorities interested in the project.
• Raised our profile within the council.
What next?
• 100% Digital Leeds.
• Wider tablet lending scheme.
• Age UK Leeds Digital Angels project.
• Google Digital Garage project - BIPC.

Data Collection
● Learner Management will be created and accessed in the same way:
○ All FDI course completions will be captured automatically
○ CaptureIT will be available to add skills development manually
○ ULN will be created/retrieved at registration
● Future developments:
○ CaptureIT will become more flexible so it will be easier to log digital skills learning for an
individual (currently by project) along with other support provided e.g. access to HMRC
services, online health information.
○ A very short learner confidence survey will be made available to all learners to allow us to find
out their response shortly after they’ve completed learning - this will allow us to manage
individual course impact.
It’s just the beginning so what next………...
● New courses
● Improvements to existing courses
● Learner Management
● Help others section - new courses and
resources for UK online centre partners
● And more……..
