Communities of practice (CoPs) are groups of people who share a common interest and learn from each other through regular interaction. CoPs form naturally around shared activities and interests, and can be useful for sharing knowledge within organizations. At Holland College, CoPs could benefit departments by facilitating information sharing, collaborative projects, and access to expertise from numerous members of the college community. However, some risks include loss of interest over time and reluctance to share authority.

Overall, wikis enhance information literacy and learning through collaborative writing and peer review.

This paper argues for a consideration that is less determined by technology, positioning instead that it be used to describe a broad and deliberate approach to learning generally, with or without the aid of computing devices or digital media.
Based on a feed-back structure of ethics, principles, methods and outcomes used by David Holgrem to popularise Permaculture Design, an ethical framework for ubiquitous learning is put forward to guide considerations. It draws on the theories, critiques and proposals of Ivan Illich, Neil Postman, Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger, Christopher Alexander, Richard Stallman and others to form three primary ethics: That learning happens everywhere; that it be relevant and; that it is shared. These ethics are substantiated through a number of principles that guide methods and hold outcomes accountable. And finally, to illustrate methods through this framework a range of projects and initiatives are presented. Communes, Commonism and Co-ops: Rethinking the university as a hackerspace
My abstract for the British HCI conference 2015 at the University of Lincoln. I'm on the 'HCI, politics and activism' panel.
In this talk I reflect on the history of hacking and its origins in the 'commune' of the academy (Winn, 2013). I then discuss the role of Copyleft licenses (Stallman, 2010) as "the practical manifestation of a social structure" (Weber, 2004, 85; Winn, 2015); a form of administration for the production of 'commonism' (Dyer-Witheford, 2007; Neary and Winn, 2012). Finally, I argue that the emerging form of 'open co-operative' can be understood as a latent material response to Stallman's original predicament when Venture Capitalism took over his 'Garden of Eden': mutual ownership and control of knowledge production. Significantly, the "crucial innovation" for an emerging form of 'open co-operative' (Bauwens, 2014) is a further adaptation of Copyleft called Commons-Based Reciprocity Licenses, or 'Copyfarleft' (Kleiner, 2007), thereby uniting co-operative legal structures with subversive licensing contracts. To what extent can we reconstitute higher education and the idea of the university along the lines of an open co-operative, so that academic science can continue to contribute to the common good? The Co-operative University: Labour, Property and Pedagogy

We are witnessing an “assault” on universities (Bailey and Freedman, 2011) and the future of higher education and its institutions is being “gambled.” (McGettigan, 2013) For many years now, we have been warned that our institutions are in “ruins” (Readings, 1997). We campaign for the “public university” (Holmwood, 2011) but in the knowledge that we work for private corporations, where academic labour is increasingly subject to the regulation of performative technologies (Ball, 2003) and where the means of knowledge production is being consolidated under the control of an executive. We want the cops off our campus but lack a form of institutional governance that gives teachers and students a right to the university. (Bhandar, 2013)
Outside the university, there is an institutional form that attempts to address issues of ownership and control over the means of production and constitute a radical form of democracy among those involved. Worker co-operatives are a form of ‘producer co- operative’ constituted on the values of autonomy, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity. In most cases the assets (the ‘means of production’) of the co-operative are held under ‘common ownership’, a social form of property that goes beyond the distinction between private and public.
I begin this paper by discussing the recent work of academics and activists to identify the advantages and issues relating to co-operative forms of higher education. I then focus in particular on the ‘worker co-operative’ organisational form and discuss its applicability and suitability to the governance of and practices within higher educational institutions. Finally, I align the values and principles of worker co-ops with the critical pedagogic theory of ‘Student as Producer’.
Networked intelligence in EDs across Canada CAEP 2016
In this session, I will review the literature on virtual communities of practice and wikis in emergency medicine. I will propose a new model for knowledge translation to link emergency physicians from across Canada in the creation of a novel open-source and free database of shared resources that can be reused and adapted to local contexts. Finally, I will provide a glimpse of a new era in knowledge translation in the era of the Semantic Web.

Personal Information Management for Software Engineering Researchers
Living in the time of abundance of information, publications, and social networks is a great opportunity for software engineering researchers. They can find much information about many projects, various relevant publications, and other researchers who did a work on a related topic. Yet, availability of (open source) software freely/publicly available is a great convenience for many. All this definitely opens up many exciting opportunities for a higher-quality and more creative research. However, this wealth causes another (bigger) challenge– how to manage and comprehend all that data and interactions and be able to contextualize the data to the research needs at hand?
In this talk, we will discuss a need for the development of new-generation personal information management systems for software engineering research. The key requirement is ubiquitous access, delivery and publishing of research data from “anywhere and anytime.” Through a more organic integration of software engineering tools, publication sources, collaborative and community research tools, researchers should be able to able to build their own personal research environments, which satisfy their personal needs, preferences, formal obligations, and life-long objectives. To illustrate some promising directions for personal research environments, we will discuss different examples built on principles of the Social Web, the Semantic Web, technology-enhanced learning, and computer-supported cooperative work.
“Small” languages –big achievements: communities engaged in Open Educational...
This presentation discusses achievements in using small languages for open educational practices. It highlights teacher engagement, reuse of resources through localization, and community building through bottom-up and socially sustained open educational resources. The presentation questions how far open educational practices have progressed in content remix and user engagement. It provides examples of a Greek open educational resources aggregator and social networks to illustrate community location and building. It raises questions about balancing open licensing frameworks with grassroots user initiatives and embracing new modes of connectivity to further open educational practices.
A Critique of the Unbundling Movement: Challenges and Opportunities for Irish...
Professor Mark Brown, Director of the National Institute for Digital Learning, gave a presentation on the challenges and opportunities of the unbundling movement in Irish higher education. The presentation discussed two major perspectives on unbundling: seeing it as a threat or an opportunity for re-imagination. It outlined different ways higher education is being unbundled, such as through new learning modes, borderless education, varying content types, new educational services, and alternative credentials. The presentation concluded by asking what system-level and institutional responses are needed to harness opportunities and mitigate risks from the unbundling of higher education.

Distance learning involves transferring knowledge to learners separated from instructors by time and/or distance using technology. It has grown due to social changes increasing demand for flexible education. Virtual worlds like Second Life are increasingly used in education, allowing synchronous collaboration between geographically dispersed users. Educators use Second Life to hold classes, meetings, and experiences that can supplement traditional education.
The university as a hackerspace v2 March 2014

The Co-operative University: Labour, Property and Pedagogy

We are witnessing an “assault” on universities (Bailey and Freedman, 2011) and the future of higher education and its institutions is being “gambled.” (McGettigan, 2013) For many years now, we have been warned that our institutions are in “ruins” (Readings, 1997). We campaign for the “public university” (Holmwood, 2011) but in the knowledge that we work for private corporations, where academic labour is increasingly subject to the regulation of performative technologies (Ball, 2003) and where the means of knowledge production is being consolidated under the control of an executive. We want the cops off our campus but lack a form of institutional governance that gives teachers and students a right to the university. (Bhandar, 2013)
Outside the university, there is an institutional form that attempts to address issues of ownership and control over the means of production and constitute a radical form of democracy among those involved. Worker co-operatives are a form of ‘producer co- operative’ constituted on the values of autonomy, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity. In most cases the assets (the ‘means of production’) of the co-operative are held under ‘common ownership’, a social form of property that goes beyond the distinction between private and public.
I begin this paper by discussing the recent work of academics and activists to identify the advantages and issues relating to co-operative forms of higher education. I then focus in particular on the ‘worker co-operative’ organisational form and discuss its applicability and suitability to the governance of and practices within higher educational institutions. Finally, I align the values and principles of worker co-ops with the critical pedagogic theory of ‘Student as Producer’.
Networked intelligence in EDs across Canada CAEP 2016
In this session, I will review the literature on virtual communities of practice and wikis in emergency medicine. I will propose a new model for knowledge translation to link emergency physicians from across Canada in the creation of a novel open-source and free database of shared resources that can be reused and adapted to local contexts. Finally, I will provide a glimpse of a new era in knowledge translation in the era of the Semantic Web.

Personal Information Management for Software Engineering Researchers
Living in the time of abundance of information, publications, and social networks is a great opportunity for software engineering researchers. They can find much information about many projects, various relevant publications, and other researchers who did a work on a related topic. Yet, availability of (open source) software freely/publicly available is a great convenience for many. All this definitely opens up many exciting opportunities for a higher-quality and more creative research. However, this wealth causes another (bigger) challenge– how to manage and comprehend all that data and interactions and be able to contextualize the data to the research needs at hand?
In this talk, we will discuss a need for the development of new-generation personal information management systems for software engineering research. The key requirement is ubiquitous access, delivery and publishing of research data from “anywhere and anytime.” Through a more organic integration of software engineering tools, publication sources, collaborative and community research tools, researchers should be able to able to build their own personal research environments, which satisfy their personal needs, preferences, formal obligations, and life-long objectives. To illustrate some promising directions for personal research environments, we will discuss different examples built on principles of the Social Web, the Semantic Web, technology-enhanced learning, and computer-supported cooperative work.

It highlights teacher engagement, reuse of resources through localization, and community building through bottom-up and socially sustained open educational resources. The presentation questions how far open educational practices have progressed in content remix and user engagement. It provides examples of a Greek open educational resources aggregator and social networks to illustrate community location and building. It raises questions about balancing open licensing frameworks with grassroots user initiatives and embracing new modes of connectivity to further open educational practices.
A Critique of the Unbundling Movement: Challenges and Opportunities for Irish...
Professor Mark Brown, Director of the National Institute for Digital Learning, gave a presentation on the challenges and opportunities of the unbundling movement in Irish higher education. The presentation discussed two major perspectives on unbundling: seeing it as a threat or an opportunity for re-imagination. It outlined different ways higher education is being unbundled, such as through new learning modes, borderless education, varying content types, new educational services, and alternative credentials. The presentation concluded by asking what system-level and institutional responses are needed to harness opportunities and mitigate risks from the unbundling of higher education.

Many of the ways we have of talking about learning and
education are based on the assumption that learning is
something that individuals do. Furthermore, we often
assume that learning ‘has a beginning and an end; that it is
best separated from the rest of our activities; and that it is
the result of teaching’ (Wenger 1998: 3). But how would
things look if we took a different track? Supposing learning
is social and comes largely from of our experience of
participating in daily life? It was this thought that formed
the basis of a significant rethinking of learning theory in the
late 1980s and early 1990s by two researchers from very
different disciplines – Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger. Their
model of situated learning proposed that learning involved
a process of engagement in a ‘community of practice’.

land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and

- What it is… Demo with stickies: Bloggers - student services blog Perifieral role – reads Active role – comments Central Role – joins, helps create, shares… Have common language (captchas, analytics…) Have common passion – information technology, writing Have common goals – to provide unique student services information through blogging
- Information was once not so easily assessable. It took time for new ideas to get from someone’s head to the rest of the world. There had to be some exploration on the idea, peer review, validation, publication, distribution. It could take years to get new information to the public. Nowadays, we often use the disclaimer that as soon as something is published to paper is it outdated. We need to adopt it because knowledge as we know it is changing. New communication tools and technologies are changing the way the public gets information… Michael Jackson Who has the time to wait?? We are in a time when people expect quality information immediately. We could have a race…Lornie armed with a blackberry and Sue in the library. Assuming Sue used no technological aids, who could answer this question the fastest. What is John Travolta’s middle name?
- utility at Holland College: Programs: Distance/online education – ACP DL, CIS Distance Apprenticeship – learn by being a member of the community – “learning to be, not learning about” Hands on learning – ex. Journalism, photography = classroom is run like a news room, photo studio Graphic media – programs work together to create exhibits & projects Administration: Several people from several departments often work on the same thing, unknown to each other, potential to “team up” and collaborate Flow of information/communication between departments
- Post graduate level – often work in isolation – need to use community of practice. Distance learning uses social networking to keep in touch. Interesting to see if our cohort participates in this
