Columbia pictures
• Columbia pictures is an American film production and distribution studio, it is a division of Sony
pictures entertainment which is a Japanese conglomerate.
• It is one of the leading film studios in the world, and apart of the big 6. It was also apart of
Hollywood's Golden age.
• The studio began in 1918 as Cohn-Brandt-Cohn film sales by brothers called Jack Cohn, Harry Cohn
and Joe Brandt.
• The company released their first feature film in August 1922.
• The name changed to Columbia pictures in 1924 and went public two years later.
• The name stemmed from a national personification of the US, which is used as the company's logo.
• Columbia began to grow in the late 1920’s as it was associated with the director Frank Capra.
• With Frank Capra and others, Columbia became one of the major companies for comedy.
• In 1930’s, Columbia major contract stars were Jean Arthur and Cary Grant.
• In 1940s Rita Hayworth became the studios ‘big’ star and was successful until the late 1950’s.
• In 1982, the studio was purchased by the huge international brand; Coca-Cola. Also during that year it
launched Tri-Star pictures as a joint adventure.
• Five years after the purchase Coca-Cola sold the production company to Tri-Star as it latter become
Columbia Pictures Entertainment.
• After only a small amount of time being independent and Coca-Cola still having a finial interest in the
company, the Japanese company Sony bought Columbia in 1989.
Making it big!
• Joe Brandt sold his one-third of the company to Harry Cohn as he was tired of dealing with the Cohn
brothers. This meant that Harry Cohn was president of the company. The brothers wanted to improve
the image of their company and try to make it big with the film production companies. In their effort
they renamed the company to Columbia pictures corporation on January 10 1924.Harry Cohn stayed as
head of production for 34 year. Columbia had a reputation for being notorious as Robert Benchley a
famous comedian called it the Pine tree studio because it has so many Cohn's! Columbia production
company consisted mostly of budgeted movies, including comedies, sport films, various series and
cartoons. Columbia eventually moved up in the hierarchy eventually joining the second tier of
Hollywood's studios along with Universal. Similar to Universal, Columbia was a horizontally integrated
company that only controlled production and distribution. Frank Capra played a big part of the rise of
the company and from 1927 Capra constantly pushed Harry Cohn for better production and a bigger
budget. The film ‘It happened one night’ help put Columbia on the map as it went down well during the
1934 Oscars. Before that point, Columbia was very dependant on theatre owners willing to take its films
since they did not own any of their own theatres. Columbia pictures could not afford to keep a big
roster of stars so they usually borrowed them from other studios. After Harry Cohn's death on
February 1958, Columbia had ambiguous identity, as they produced old fashioned films and
contemporary films. By 1966, the studio was suffering from box office failures and take over had
suffered. In 1970, the company nearly went bankrupt until they tried every options available to branch
out such as arcade games. The 1980’s saw the brand Coca- Cola by into the company until Sony got
involved.
