This is a student-centered project, which allowed student to explore an area of interest such as: ecology, tourism, economy, fauna, drug issues, etc. Students researched the area of interest and incorporated the information from the sources into their own article.
1. National Geographic “en español”
What’s up group
National Geographic “en español” has offered you a “once in a lifetime” opportunity to
participate as a writer in a “special issue” featuring “Colombia”. National Geographic is a
leading magazine and hires only the cream of the crop. You are an expert in your area and you
are thrilled with the offering! National Geographic “en español” allows you to choose one area
of choice and expects you to compose a 400/450-word article in Spanish, which should be
published in 2018.
National Geographic requires that you:
● Select an area of choice. (Read the list provided or discuss with Sr. Miguez other options)
● Come up with 3 “open-ended” original questions that you would like to answer in your
article. ( If the answer to the question is yes or no, then the question is not valid)
● Conduct research using trusted sources in the internet/magazines/ people. However,
WIKIPEDIA is not a trusted source.
● The article should include photographs, graphs, and visual aids to help the reader
understand the content. Each visual should have a short description on the margin.
● The purpose of this article is to conduct research and push you out of your comfort zone.
It is a project, which encourages you to go in depth into an area of choice. The idea of the
project is NOT to write a few random lines about something you already know.
For instance if you are trying to talk about a tourist landmark in Colombia, a question you
could ask yourself is “how does tourism contribute to the local economy of Cartagena”? or
In visual arts: In a world, which values and emphasizes the idea of being fit and
athletic, how did Botero succeed with his art?
● Sr. Miguez has been to Colombia a few times; besides, he has Colombian friends and
reads a lot about Latin America. So, he knows quite a lot about Colombia! However,
there are many areas, which present opportunities for you to challenge and expand his
knowledge. You need to blow his mind with your article! He wants to learn from you!
2. As you embark on this writing journey:
● Please, remember to conduct yourself as an honors student, what we as a
community of learners value, and the rules we establish to accomplish the highest of
our potentials.
Cada persona puede seleccionar un tema cultural para investigar:

13. Gastronomía
14. Ciencia y tecnología
15. Artes plásticas: pintura, escultura, etc.

19. La literatura colombiana
20. El cultivo de flores (como producto de exportación)
21. Tratado de Libre Comercio entre Colombia y Estados Unidos (TLC). Relaciones
internacionales.
22. Los derechos humanos
IDEAS para ayudarte:
● Trata de buscar artículos en español. (Reading in English and translating takes too much
time!)
● Copia palabras (lift words) de los artículos que leas y que puedes usar en tu artículo.
● Escribe frases simples en español. No necesitas frases largas o complicadas.
3. ● Demuestra (show) que entiendes lo que escribes. (Careful about tense choice, do not use
tenses that you have not learned). USE PRETERITO, IMPERFECTO, SUBJUNTIVO.
● Piensa tres preguntas que quieras responder. Preguntas generales, grandes. No pueden
ser preguntas de tipo si, no.
Examples of good questions: (The questions should be in Spanish)
● Based on Colombia’s geographical position, what is it possible to grow there?
● How does Colombia’s weather affect agriculture?
● What led “El pibe Valderrama” to become the best Colombian soccer player?
● Why did many people celebrate while other cry on the day Pablo Escobar died?
● Why is Colombian coffee so appreciated in the world?
Timeline: Failure to follow this timeline will result in delays in the process. I will not allow
for late submission of work without point deductions. You have two full weeks to work on
it.
