a symbol of integration and

4. History
o The massive structure was first commissioned by
German Muslims who belonged to the Turkish-
Islamic Union for Religious Affairs.
o A controversy surrounded the development of
the mosque as protesters opposed its
development.
o The construction was funded by hundreds of
Muslim associations, but also bank loans and
donations from the Turkish government's religious
affairs authority in Germany, DITIB.
o Cologne city council approved the plans in
2008, despite the conservative Christian
Democrats voting against it.
o The mosque first opened for prayer during
Ramadan in 2017, but was officially opened by
Turkish President during his visit to Germany in
September 2018.

o The mosque is designed with similar
elements as the Ottoman
architectural style, mainly
characterized by the large dome.

The mosque most appealing features include glass
walls which allow visitors to feel an impression of
openness and a 35 m high (glass and concrete)
dome and two 55 m minarets.

The feeling of openness is
reinforced by a welcoming

oIt features a Turkish-Ottoman roof and
is designed to be transparent by using
glass that features natural lighting
which creates a transparent structure.
oModern atmosphere can be seen
through the design of the glass that
blends on the wall.
oPeople inside can look out, and those
outside can look in, an invitation for
open interfaith dialogue.

materials create a
homogenous environment.

solitary within the ensemble,

The interior design combines oriental
elements with contemporary Islam, which
is reflected in the ceiling medallions with
Arabic inscriptions in gold leaf.
These feature the names of all the great
prophets who play an important role in
Jewish, Christian and Islamic history.

1) Ceramic arts: Geometric patterns and gold
calligraphy all over the prayer hall, in which the spirit of
prayer runs through the entire space.
