Emerging technologies for teaching and learning: a tour of the 2010 horizon
How is the landscape for teaching and learning with technology changing this year? We begin with an overview of current methods for apprehending emergent technologies, including Delphi, futures markets, networks, and scenarios. Drawing on those methods we identify a series of emerging trends, from interface changes to open content to gaming. Next we delve into several high-impact fields. Social media has already transformed the general cybercultural world, and is reshaping the academy. Mobile devices have begun to revolutionize many levels of our technological interactions.
I research and develop programs on the advanced uses of information technology in liberal arts colleges. My specialties include digital writing, weblogs, copyright and intellectual property, information literacy, wireless culture and teaching, project management, information design, and interdisciplinary collaboration. I contribute to a series of weblogs, including NITLE Tech News, MANE IT leaders, and Smartmobs, when not creating digital learning objects (like Gormenghast). I’ve taught English and information technology studies at the University of Michigan and Centenary College.

It's hardly easy to be softly hard: freedom and control in learning spacesjondron
The document discusses different generations of distance learning pedagogies and how they align with different structures. The first generation used instructivist pedagogies focused on individual learning. The technologies of this generation included CAI, textbooks, and one-way broadcasts. The second generation used social constructivist pedagogies centered around groups and collaboration. However, groups have limitations in terms of openness, scale, and preparation for lifelong learning. The document then examines how different structures like groups, networks, and collectives relate to different levels of freedom and control in learning.
The document discusses how new social media and Web 2.0 technologies are impacting education by changing learner and teacher roles and requiring new digital literacies, and both positively enabling greater access to resources and participation, but also risking social exclusion for those without access or skills; it examines case studies of using technologies for social inclusion and combating exclusion; and promotes the open sharing of practices on the Cloudworks site to transfer knowledge and philosophies around open and accessible education for all.

Journal club 1- Randomized trial of Hyperglycemic control in PICUZaheen Zehra
This randomized controlled trial involved 1369 children admitted to pediatric ICUs in England to assess if tight glycemic control using insulin reduces mortality and morbidity compared to conventional control. Children were randomly assigned to tight control (72-126 mg/dL blood glucose) or conventional control (>216 mg/dL). The primary outcome was days alive and free from ventilation at 30 days. Secondary outcomes assessed morbidity and costs at ICU discharge and 12 months. Tight control did not increase days free from ventilation but was associated with less renal replacement therapy, shorter hospital stays, and lower costs, especially in non-cardiac patients. Leadership Driven Innovation: The Role of the Engineer in Our FutureWaqas Tariq
The development of new technologies, particularly those identified as advanced and/or disruptive, rely on two individual but highly interrelated competencies, leadership and innovation. These two are the basis for the successful development of most of the major technologies in production, today. At their best they are also the genesis for most of the large commercial and industrial organizations currently operating in the global marketplace. More importantly, it is the state of health of these two competencies that determines the longevity and profitability of these organizations. This paper tracks a hypothetical progression from inception to integrated production for what can be idealized as a maturation process of a new company/technology. While it is directed to represent most any type of new technology it is particularly suited to advance technologies and those organizations dealing in products for accelerating markets, such as for the aerospace and advance communications arenas.

The library of today and the future is about online resources and bringing the information to the consumer not waiting for the consumer to come to the information. How can libraries use these technologies to find the potential online user and give them information while still serving the traditional in-person library user?
Globally-minded educators are needed to develop global projects that connect students internationally. Global projects help students develop important skills like digital literacy, cross-cultural communication, and collaboration. Educators should consider tools like wikis, Skype, and blogs that facilitate online collaboration and shared learning spaces between students in different countries. Successful global projects have won awards while also engaging students' minds and helping them learn to appreciate different perspectives.
