The relationship between Britain and its American colonies deteriorated due to differences in views on taxation and government. After fighting alongside each other in the French and Indian War, Britain imposed taxes on the colonies to help pay off war debts. While colonists paid far less taxes than those in Britain, they objected to "taxation without representation." These tensions grew and ultimately led to the American Revolution and independence from Britain. Privilege and lack of privilege are important concepts for psychology and counseling to address in working with diverse populations. Focusing on privilege rather than just oppression can help increase awareness and potentially facilitate positive change.
