What is meant by context?
In education, the context is the study of a specific school or class in order to
design an appropriate structure for the context object of study about what and
how to teach in an effective way.
To prepare the design, we need to check the following aspects:
People (students and stakeholders), physical setting, teaching resources nature of
the course and institution, teaching resources and time.
Why is important to define
one’s context?
Defining the context is important because if the teacher has knowledge of the
context and identify the needs of a group, is going to be able to design and
prepare an effective syllabus in order to provide accurate input for students
according to their needs.

Comparisons
Los Medios
 Localization: Rural area
 English is not an important subject
because children are farmers.
 The majority of the parents are
illiterate due to their agricultural
duties.
El Arca
 Urban area
 English is important because San
Andres is a touristic island.
 The majority of the parents are
professionals.
After analyzing your context does anything stand out that will be a
major source or constraint in developing your course?
 According to the classes observed, the teacher give the lessons
using the school text which is an evidence that there is not a
previous planning of the class. Is a reason to suggest the
importance of planning a lesson showing her different options
of activities according to the context to extend her way to
teach English.

major source or constraint in developing your course?

 English language teaching process doesn’t include techniques such as role play,
storytelling through games and good relation to elicit student’s participation
in class.
Los Medios
Can you identify particular challenges that you will need to address
in order to design a successful course?
 The modification of the curriculum including audiovisual support and
internet access to complement the course with different activities.
 Having into account the Coordinator declarations, it will be necessary to
make an investment in suitable furniture which facilitate working in group.
 To increase the amount of hours per week having into consideration that the
Common European Framework of Reference for Languages suggest five
to eight hours per week.
 The teacher should star to elicit students to speak English in class.

Can you identify particular challenges that you will need to address
in order to design a successful course?

and spatiotemporal organization in spite of the lack of resources and preparation in
this language.

process is inserted.
