Use cases
19. Use Cases
Broadcast classes/lessons – streaming
»Lecturer wishes to provide a live stream of a workshop
or presentation to multiple students over multiple
courses.
»Lecturer has found expert speaker and they are
agreeable to provide a presentation online.
»Organisation wishes to broadcast free content
externally to participants without them having to
register
»Similar to ustream/livestream
20. Use Cases
Recording of sessions/lessons
» Lecturer wishes to record online workshop/presentation to upload
or link to theirVLE. This will allow students to reinforce the topic
or catch up.
» Lecturer conducts online feedback to individual students or
groups. They wish this to be recorded as evidence and record of
feedback.
» Lecturer has an assignment that requires groups to participate and
hold regular group meetings. This is to be recorded so that the
lecturer can ensure that these meetings happen and are
conducted appropriately.
21. Use Cases
Student group work – collaboration
»Lecturer sets an assignment to students that requires
collaboration, group/team work.
»Some students will not be able to make face to face
meetings but can make online meetings.
»Some students don't have PC’s at home but have tablet
or smartphone devices.
22. Use Cases
Student presentations
»A lecturer may wish to set an assignment which has an
element of presentation.
»This may also require peer review
»This presentation will be recorded as form part of an
assessment/portfolio
23. Use Cases
Feedback
»A lecturer may wish to provide feedback to a student or
student group using an online tool.
»This can involve screen sharing so the lecturer can
highlight specific areas of concern or point the students
towards resources.
»This will allow the feedback to be recorded and the
student(s) can be clear of any follow up actions.
24. Use cases
Collaboration projects between external partners
»Lecturing staff may wish to collaborate with external
commercial companies or with other
educational/research bodies.
»This collaboration might be international
»Participants might be restricted to use traditionalVC
including ISDNVC
25. Use Cases
Course planning
»It is required for course teams to meet on a regular
basis to plan and review courses
»It is not always possible for everyone to be in the one
site for these meetings.
»Organisation wishes to save money on staff travelling
between sites
26. Use Cases
Subject experts (eg Janet content providers)
»Lecturing staff may find subject experts that can add
value to a lesson.
»This expert may only have access to traditionalVC
systems and can not get approval for desktop client
install
27. Why not use....?
Pros:
» Free
» Multiple participants
» Video/Audio
Cons:
» Forces skype client
» Not standards based

Editor's Notes
In Northern Ireland The terms collaboration and Shared Services can be interchangeable. We typically think of collaboration in terms of individuals such as students or teachers. The enterprise in involved in collaboration also. Today we will be looking at all forms of collaboration although the focus will be fixed on how it affects you.
Jisc was created from UK collaboration…. And still IS a massive shared services/collaborative organisation.
We do 3 things…
Operate a
Shared Infrastructure – The network… allows you to use our collaboration services, cloud services in a high speed, low latency network
We utilised shared purchasing volume to negotiate deals on your behalf – examples: ecollection, journals, ebooks for FE
And of course we provide impartial advice and guidance and can support collaboration in your organisation.
In a user context description of the types of collaborative interaction.
Student groups/groupwork
Instructor lead group activities/ distance mentoring
Course teams/distance sharing expertise and material
External commercials or experts providing content or help
Enterprise shared services were major facilities or functions are shared between partners
Vscene
Live streaming and Capture developments
The Janet network
Janet txt
Underpins everything you do with collaboration and technology delivery
Low latency connections for real time collaboration
Research unimpeded access(Big data / Gnome projects)
Cloud computing such as office 365 – email an applications
Distance learning – home learning , anytime anywhere via campus VLE
Use this slide to discuss how having loads of peering points on the network brings them closer to the cloud and online products.
Low Latency – what do we mean and how it makes a difference to the end user experience
How its better to keep the number of “hops” as low as possible by bringing providers to your back door.
Any brokered/framework services we offer insist on Janet connected status. You have assurance when you buy off Jisc!
Office 365
Azure
BBC
Google
Collaboration with UK, European and international
Research partnerships with UK, European and international made easier (big data examples)
Particular emphasis on NI FE colleges using Slough Datacentre for their enterprise shared services for finance.
Vscene acts like a bridge or gateway between all these devices.
We are improving and updating all the time…
Retiring redundant systems: ISDN is not called for anymore and will be removed in the next few months
Implementing the new: We are progressing Lync/Skype access into the system
Vscene is the Jisc videoconference service.
Including the previous incarnation of JVCS it has been in service for 21 years!
It enables education and research to coordinate all their videoconferences and interoperate between hardware systems and browser conferencing.
Obviously this is the login page, and you can see that as well as native accounts we allow you to link your account to your Institutional Login, using the uk federation.
From the main page (admin screen shot so busy example) explain top two box areas.
2 major modes of use – scheduled conferences and Virtual Rooms
The scheduled conferences appear on the left and the Virtual rooms on the right
Clicking the little cameras anywhere left you launch a conference or join a room.
Talk about Schudled conferences first.
Guest can be anyone and have a number of ways to be added.
Can be sent a number to dial from their VC system
Can be emailed a URL and added on their browser
Telephone guests also possible in VCs
Once all the people are added click scheudle or launch now.
Application Sharing
You can see that the service is used for a rough third for admin/project meetings and anotjer third for education delivery, the combined lecture, tutorial, teaching.
Slide probably needs updated… Skype for business etc…
The new Vidyo infrastructure provides some immediate and longer term benefits
The items in blue are just some of the benefits that will be integrated and launched in August 2016
The items in orange are our medium term plans for new features that we can now deliver.
The ideas currently under discussion in Ideascale, in no particular order.
It can be used as a notification tool (like reminders you get from doctors, delivery confirmations etc)
Can also be used as a promotional tool for e.g. events, guest speakers, social gatherings
Recently we've been approached by customers to see what we were doing in this space
We previously ran some focus groups to understand what customers were using and how they were using it
Currently scoping the idea of a framework agreement with the top suppliers
We would like to know from customers if this would be of use to you all (maybe a show of hands?)
And if those in room would be interested in helping us to scope main features that must be included by an framework supplier
An anchor tenant is an institution willing to be named on our procurement exercise, as a potential first customer via the framework.
No financial commitment necessary
An institution can choose not to use the framework in future should they wish.
We have had positive interest from suppliers to be a part of a framework, and would like to show them a list of specific institutions interested in this area.
In developing the projects within the programme – we look at the at the key elements that comprise a typical College operating model.
At the heart of the model is the Curriculum – the product that we offer – which requires special attention to develop
Key contributors to that are people – the workforce within the College which needs to be developed and supported appropriately.
Students are our customers – feedback and potentially input to curriculum design should be increased
Our outputs are influenced by Business & industry – this is a critical link – between FE and the economy that it supports.
Underpinning and supporting this front line work are the Governance approaches and the Systems (incl NICI2) that measure performance and seek to add value to the model.
Technology:
Different systems for authentication
Communication – telephone, email
Network connections, technologies and designs different ways of approaching technical solutions

There are a number of areas that staff members identified feelings of loss in:
Status
Role
Identity
Quality
Collaboration
Time
Communication
Motivation
Certainty, and Knowledge.
Communicating positively during a time when many are feeling a loss is a real challenge during a merger situation
