creating, and innovating.

of contribution. Characterized by highly
diversified teams working together.
Collaborative Problem-Solving

engage in a process whereby two or more agents
attempt to solve a problem by sharing the
understanding and effort required to come to a
solution and pooling their knowledge, skills and
efforts to reach that solution.”

6-D Model of
Culture
Hofstede's 6-D
Model of Culture
Philippines UK (Britain) US (United States)
·The degree to which less powerful
members of a country's
institutions and organizations
expect and accept unequal power
distribution.
Power
Distance
Philippines
The Philippines, with a ranking of 94, is a hierarchical
society.
UK (Britain)
At 35, the United Kingdom is a society that believes
in minimizing differences amongst people.
US (United States)
A fairly low score on Power Distance (40) which implies that:
• “liberty and justice for all.”
• Managers and staff both anticipate consultation, and information is
constantly exchanged.
• contact is casual, straightforward, and participatory to a certain
extent
·The degree of interdependence a
society maintains among its
members.
Individualism
Philippines
The Philippines, with a score of 32, is considered a
collectivistic society.
• Long-term commitment to a member's group.
UK (Britain)
With an Individualist ranking of 89, the British are an
extremely private and individualistic people.
• children are encouraged to think for themselves
• Personal satisfaction is the path to happiness
US (United States)
With a score of 91, the US is one of the most individualist
society in the world.
• society is loosely-knit
• expectation is that people look after themselves and
their immediate families only
The fundamental issue here is whether
people are motivated by a desire to be
the best (Masculine) or by a desire to
enjoy what they do (Feminine).
Masculinity
Philippines
With a score of 64, it is expected that this society “live in
order to work”
• managers are expected to be decisive and assertive
• performance and conflicts are resolved by fighting
them out
UK (Britain)
With a score of 66, Britain is a Masculine society which
implies that they are highly success oriented and driven.
• children are encouraged to think for themselves
• Personal satisfaction is the path to happiness
US (United States)
At 62, the US is ranked as a masculine society which can be
seen in a typical American behavioral pattern
• “strive to be the best they can be” and that “the winner
takes all”
• display and talk freely about their “successes” and
achievements in life.
The way a society deals with the fact
that the future can never be known:
should we try to control the future or
just let it happen?
Uncertainty
Avoidance
Philippines
The Philippines scores a 44 on this dimension and thus has
a low preference for avoiding uncertainty
• a more relaxed attitude
• low UAI, people believe there should be no more rules
than are necessary
UK (Britain)
At 35, the UK shows a low score on UA.
• 'make it up as they go along’ changing plans as new
information comes to light
• In work terms this results in planning that is not detail
oriented – the end goal will be clear (due to high MAS)
US (United States)
With a low score of 46, the US falls below average.
• fair amount of support for novel concepts and goods
• Americans are more accepting of anyone's views or
viewpoints and allow for freedom of speech
Deals with how every society has to maintain some
links with its own past while dealing with the
challenges of the present and future, and societies
prioritize these two existential goals differently.
Long-term
Orientation
Philippines
With a score of 27, the Philippines are more Normative than
pragmatic
• strong concern with establishing the absolute Truth
• exhibit great respect for traditions
• a focus on achieving quick results
UK (Britain)
With an intermediate score of 51 in this dimension, a
dominant preference in British culture cannot be
determined.
US (United States)
The United States scores normative on the fifth dimension
with a low score of 26
• prone to scrutinize new knowledge
• evaluate their results on a short-term basis
• motivates individuals to seek immediate results in the
workplace
This dimension is defined as the extent to which
people try to control their desires and impulses,
based on the way they were raised.
A tendency toward a relatively weak control over
their impulses is called “Indulgence”, whereas a
relatively strong control over their urges is called
“Restraint”.
Indulgence
Philippines
With a score of 42, the Philippines' culture is one of restraint.
• tend toward negativity and pessimism
• place a lower premium on leisure time
• decisions are constrained by societal expectations and that
indulging is somewhat wrong.
UK (Britain)
A score of 69 means that the British society is Indulgent.
• a tendency to act on their urges and desires related to
enjoying life
• put a higher premium on leisure time
US (United States)
The United States scores as an Indulgent (68) society on the
sixth dimension.
• Work hard and play hard.
Have a great day ahead.
Thank you!
