India is an agricultural-based economy and is the largest producer of fruits and vegetables in the world. Fruits & vegetables, being perishable in nature require certain techniques of preservation for retaining the quality and extend the self-life of the production. The estimated annual production of fruits and vegetables in the country is about 130 million tonnes. The cold storage & cold chain facilities are the prime infrastructural component for such perishable commodities.
Cold storage is a temperature – controlled supply chain network, with storage and distribution activities carried out in a manner such that the temperature of a product is maintained in a specified range, needed to keep it fresh and edible for a much longer period than in normal ambient conditions.

Masters seminar on Privatization of Agricultural Extension Services.Ayush Mishra
Privatization of Agricultural Extension Services.
Extension services have been traditionally funded, managed and delivered by government all over the world. The Monopoly of public sector extension has been challenged since 1980 with the emergence of many private players, who also fund and deliver extension services. This process of funding and delivering the extension services by private individual or organization is called Private extension. The primary reason behind the agricultural extension privatization is declining trend in government expenditure for extension in several countries, including India over the last few decades. With an increase in commercialized farming in the developing countries during 21st century, production system is shifting to demand driven from supply driven that demands a technically sound & client accountable extension service which is not just limited to input supply and advisory services but also seek processing and marketing of the produce. Challenges and opportunities possessed by globalization & liberalization era calls for structural and functional adjustment with cost effective & need based extension service. The public extension, facing financial & technical constraints has disappointing performance & the need for private extension service becomes even more important in these changing times. Decentralization, cost sharing, cost recovery withdrawal from selected services, and contracting are some of the options exercised by various governments in privatizing extension services.
Keywords: Agricultural extension, private extension service, privatization.

Hamdard Laboratories (India), is a Unani pharmaceutical company in India (following the independence of India from Britain, "Hamdard" Unani branches were established in Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan) and Pakistan). It was established in 1906 by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed in Delhi, and became
a waqf (non-profitable trust) in 1948. It is associated with Hamdard Foundation, a charitable educational trust.
Hamdard' is a compound word derived from Persian, which combines the words 'hum' (used in the sense of 'companion') and 'dard' (meaning 'pain'). 'Hamdard' thus means 'a companion in pain' and 'sympathizer in suffering'.
The goals of Hamdard were lofty; easing the suffering of the sick with healing herbs. With a simple tenet that no one has ever become poor by giving, Hakeem Abdul Majeed let the whole world find compassion in him.
They had always maintained that working in old, traditional ways would not be entirely fruitful. A broader outlook was essential for a continued and meaningful existence. their effective team at Hamdard helped the system gain its pride of place and thus they made an entry into an expansive world of discovery and research.
Hamdard Laboratories was founded in 1906 in Delhi by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed and Ansarullah Tabani, a Unani practitioner. The name Hamdard means "companion in suffering" in Urdu language.(itself borrowed from Persian) Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed was born in Pilibhit City UP, India in 1883 to Sheikh Rahim Bakhsh. He is said to have learnt the complete Quran Sharif by heart. He also studied the origin of Urdu and Persian languages. Subsequently, he acquired the highest degree in the unani system of medicine.
Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed got in touch with Hakim Zamal Khan, who had a keen interest in herbs and was famous for identifying medicinal plants. Having consulted with his wife, Abdul Majeed set up a herbal shop at Hauz Qazi in Delhi in 1906 and started to produce herbal medicine there. In 1920 the small herbal shop turned into a full-fledged production house.
Hamdard Foundation was created in 1964 to disburse the profits of the company to promote the interests of the society. All the profits of the company go to the foundation.
After Abdul Majeed's death, his son Hakeem Abdul Hameed took over the administration of Hamdard Laboratories at the age of fourteen.
Even with humble beginnings, the goals of Hamdard were lofty; easing the suffering of the sick with healing herbs. With a simple tenet that no one has ever become poor by giving, Hakeem Abdul Majeed let the whole world find compassion in him. Unfortunately, he passed away quite early but his wife, Rabia Begum, with the support of her son, Hakeem Abdul Hameed, not only kept the institution in existence but also expanded it. As he grew up, Hakeem Abdul Hameed took on all responsibilities. After helping with his younger brother's upbringing and education, he included him in running the institution. Both brothers Hakeem Abdul Hameed and Hakim Mohammed

COLD STORAHE AND COLD SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT OF HORTICULTURAL CROPS
1. COLD STORAGE AND COLD SUPPLY
CHAIN MANAGEMENT OF
HORTICULTURAL CROPS(FRUITS
AND VEGETABLES)
BY :- AYUSH MISHRA
2. INTRODUCTION
Cold Chain is a logistic system that provides a
series of facilities for maintaining ideal storage
conditions for perishable products from point of
origin to the point of consumption.
It extend and ensure the self life of products such
as fresh agriculture produce, seafood, frozen
food etc.
Cold chain retains the longevity of product
characteristics, active ingredients, freshness &
nutritive value.
3. India is 2nd largest producer of fruits and
vegetables in World. 70-75% of these fruits and
vegetables are consumed fresh while 20-30% are
wasted and only 2-3% is processed.
The major reason for low processing and high loss
of fruits and vegetables is the lack of proper cold
supply chain management (including cold
storages).
The total value of post harvest loss of fruits and
vegetables is estimated to be over Rs 40000
crore.
4.
5.
6. At present The Cold chain market in India is only
around $13 Billion.
Currently there are roughly 7000 Cold storages in
India with capacity of around 32 million tonnes, out of
which 80% is used exclusively for Potato and
remaining 20% is used for fruits, other vegetables,
processed foods etc.
There are around 30000 refrigerated vehicles in India
out of which 80% are used only for transporting milk
and milk based products.
Due to poor cold supply chain management the share
of India in global market is only around 1% which is
insignificant, despite being the 2nd largest producer.
7. Reduce Costs
Improve Product Integrity
Increase Customer Satisfaction
Reduce wastage and returns of
expired stock
8. Storage Surface
-Refrigerated warehouses for storage
of temperature sensitive products.
Refrigerated Transportation
- Reefer trucks, Containers, ships and
Trains for transporting temperature
sensitive products.
11. 1) Refrigerated Containers:- They are portable and can
be safely used to transport goods over long distances.
The temperature ranges from -40⁰C to 10⁰C.
2) Blast Freezers :- They are used in storing and
supplying frozen fruits and vegetables. Temperature in
blast freezers can be very low at -40⁰C .
3) Cold Rooms :- They are used as hygienic good
processing areas and in storage of fresh fruits and
vegetables.
12.
13.
14.
15.
16.
17. Growth in retail sector
Shift towards horticultural crops
Growth in processed food sectors
Changing consumption pattern
Demand from pharmaceutical sector
18. Rising real-estate cost
Location for cold storage
Lack of proper Infrastructure
High energy cost & power cuts
Commodity specialization (capability of storing
single commodity only)
Low awareness of labor in handling temperature
sensitive products.
19. Cold Chain is supposed to be a major part
of an effective supply chain infrastructure
dealing with fruits and vegetables but its
capacity is quite less than the demand.
Practically Cold Chain management is not
just about storage but it includes
temperature monitoring at each step from
production to the consumption.
20. The availability of highly developed cold supply
chain infrastructure has done wonders in countries
like US, China & UK. It has not just helped in
increasing the income of farmers but also increased
their net output and changed the consumption
pattern.
A well organized and managed cold chain reduces
spoilage, retains quality & flavour and guarantees a
cost efficient delivery to the consumers.
A significant aspect of the system is that if any of the
link is missing or weak the whole system might fail.
