3. INTRODUCTION
CHF occurs when the heart fails to sustain an adequate
delivery of blood and therefore oxygen and nutrients to
tissues.
It is associated with number of symptoms arising from
defect in left ventricular filling and /or emptying, including
shortness of breath and exertional fatigue.
symptoms are due to inadequate perfusion, venous
congestion and disturbed water and electrolyte balance.

4. EPIDERMIOLOGY
With prevalence ranging from
• 0.3% to 2% in population at large
• 3-5% in population over 65 year old
• 8% & 16% over 75 year old
Loss of cardiac reserve with age and heart failure may often
complicate presence of other condition elderly.
More than 10% of patients with heart failure have atrial
fibrillation as contributory factor.
Main causes of death are progressive pump failure, sudden
cardiac death & recurrent myocardial infarction. 4
