Coffee is prepared from roasted coffee beans that come from the seeds of Coffea species berries, native to Africa and Madagascar. Coffee plants are now cultivated in over 70 countries in tropical regions. The two most commonly grown species are Coffea arabica and Coffea robusta. Once picked, coffee berries are processed, dried, and the beans are roasted and brewed with hot water to produce coffee. While the earliest credible evidence of coffee drinking was in 15th century Yemen, according to legend Ethiopians were the first to recognize coffee's energizing effects.
