Codes & Conventions
Used for “Romance” genre with examples!
Romantic drama has some certain codes and conventions, through
which the makers of films falling in this category convey certain
meaning to the targeted audience. These conventions are further
divided into categories. For example: symbols (costumes, setting,
locations, colours, and etc), written and audio (dialogues, music and
etc), technical (high, low and other angle shots used, editing,
composition, and etc) and so on.
Cute little romantic things, romantic atmosphere (mis-en-scenes)
contribute a lot. The typical props used in romantic drama are: cake,
chocolates, candles, flowers (mostly roses), gifts and etc.
Then, different types of locations are used in such types of films.
Some examples of these stereotypical places could be gardens,
beaches, restaurants and etc. Then, there are stock situations, like boy
and girl meet each other accidently, both fall in love with each other
and are betrayed by their destiny, one suffers from unrequited love,
boy and girl spend most of the time mourning the loss of other, and
etc. Most of the times, the endings are also melancholic and very
typical.
Particular style of music is also used, following the pop genre. Romantic
and soft violin or piano tunes, light romantic songs with romantic lyrics
and beautiful guitar strokes, at times narrations to add beauty,
philosophical dialogues and many other conventions like this are
commonly used.
Through cinematography, like through the use of high and
low angles special codes and conventions for romantic
drama are produced. Highly special effects are not used in
films falling in this genre , as the focus is on reality. However,
the technique of sharp cuts and flashbacks is usually used.
The elements of codes and conventions are further divided
into an extensive and large range, but I have covered all the
major forms which are mostly used and are considered
necessary by some of the perfectionists. I will be using some
of these codes and conventions, which I will find important for
my final product.
