COCONUT &
COCONUT BASED
PRODUCTS
FROM SRI LANKA
Coconut (Cocus nucifera) is one of the major plantation
crops in Sri Lanka, which accounts for approximately
12% of the country’s agricultural produce. The total land
area under cultivation is 395,000 hectares and about
2,500 million nuts are produced per year. Sri Lanka is in
the fourth position among the other coconut producing
countries in the world.
There are three different major product categories in this
sector made out of coconut nut.
	Coconut Kernel Products
	Coconut Fibre Products
	Coconut Shell Products
Coconut Development Authority, Coconut Cultivation
Board and Coconut Research Institute are three major
Government Institutions that are responsible for product &
quality improvement, management, supply development
and research respectively.
To ensure the quality of Desiccated Coconut exports, the
certificate issued by the Coconut Development Authority
should be accomplished with each and every shipment.
Coconut Kernel
Products
Desiccated Coconut
Sri Lanka is very popular in the
world market for Desiccated
Coconut (DC). Defatted DC,
Flavoured DC, and Roasted
DC are the main sub products
in the category, which have
been exported from Sri Lanka
for more than a century. The
distinguished white colour,
texture and characteristic taste
are unique to Sri Lankan DC,
unmatched by other suppliers.
Popular international chocolate
and biscuit brand manufactures
use Sri Lankan DC for their
products.
There are about 60 DC mills in
Sri Lanka and the approximate
total production per annum is
75,000 metric tons. All mills
have quality control laboratories
which are closely monitored by
the Government Authorities.
Major Markets:
Pakistan, USA,
Middle East, EU
Coconut Cream and
Milk/Milk Powder
One-hundred percent pure
concentrates of coconut kernel
extracts, with no added artificial
flavours or preservatives are
used to manufacture these
products. Coconut Milk Powder
is made out of coconut milk
extracts following a spray drying
process. The products, which are
popular in the confectionary and
bakery industries, are also used
in many types of cuisines across
the world, to obtain a unique
creamy texture and taste.
Major Markets:
Germany, UK, Australia, UAE,
Jamaica
Coconut Water
Coconut Water is an isotonic liquid, which can replace the fluids
and minerals of the human body. Therefore, this can be described
as a natural energy and health drink. It contains glucose as a main
ingredient and minerals such as Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium
and Phosphorus as trace elements. With growing health concerns
among people, this product shows an increase in demand.
Coconut Oil
Virgin Coconut Oil (VCNO) extracted from the Coconut Kernel is a
natural edible product rich with vitamin E commonly used in cooking
and to manufacture cosmetics. Due to the stability of coconut oil in
high temperatures, VCNO is known to be beneficial for health when
used to deep-fry food products, compared to other edible oils. The
product is available in bulk, consumer packs such as packets, jars
and bottles and also as capsules that can be directly taken as a
supplement.
Coconut Fibre Products
The fibre extracted from the “Mesocarp” the outer layer of the
coconut, Coir Fibre, enjoys the unique properties of being the
longest, natural fibre as well as the strongest in terms of twist
resistance. The supply of Coir Fibre and fibre-based products have
been a widespread cottage industry in Sri Lanka for centuries. The
unique technique known as ‘drum system’ is used to extract fibre,
producing long pure fibre, mostly suitable for the brush industry.
It falls into two main categories; brown and white fibre, which
contributes to 80% and 20% respectively of the world coir fibre
demand. There’s a range of products made of coconut fibre and its
by-products, available in Sri Lanka.
Doormats (Handmade/Machine made)
Using various types of coloured fibre and yarn with available
production facilities, different types of Door Mats are produced to
suit customer needs. The new doormats are produced using wired
– coir eliminates most of the inherent disadvantages of traditional
brush mats. These products are more suitable for the winter season.
Major Markets:
Germany, Australia, Netherland, UK, France
Coir Twine
The product is made out of bristle fibre (long fibre) or bristle
fibre mixed with omatt fibre (short fibre), according to buyer
specifications. These are mostly used in agriculture, horticulture and
aquaculture industries.
Major Markets:
USA, Korea, China, Japan, Netherlands
Geotextiles
This is a blanket made out of coir fibre, widely used to prevent
soil erosion on roads, railway sides, river banks, leisure grounds
and industrial areas. The product replaces synthetic materials such
as Polypropylene, Polyester and Nylon etc. due to environmental
concerns.
Major Markets:
South Korea, US, Netherlands, Germany, Spain
Rubberized Coir Products for
Horticultural and Agricultural Industry
Pots made out of natural coconut fibre and natural
rubber latex are used as plant pots. These pots
facilitate better aeration to the plant’s root zone
ensuring a high growth rate. It also allows the root
to grow out of the pot when free growth is required.
These products are available in various shapes and
sizes and can be purchased according to customer
needs.
Major Markets:
Korea, Japan, Netherlands and Germany
Rubberized Coir Mattresses
Mixture of coir fibre and latex are steam heated,
pressed and vulcanized to produce mattresses.
These mattresses are used in physiological therapy
for various kinds of bone diseases.
Major Markets:
Germany and Japan
Coco Peat Products
This is a by-product of the Brown Fibre extraction
process and is used widely as a growing medium
for plants in Horticultural/ Agricultural applications
known as coco peat and is used as a substitute for
peat moss in the Europe. The products are mainly
exported as compressed briquettes, blocks, disks or
grow bags.
Major Markets:
France, South Korea, Japan, Mexico, Netherland
Coconut Shell Products
The inner shell of the coconut is processed through
“waste heat recovery” to produce pure and clean
charcoal. These are available in Charcoal Briquettes,
widely used for outdoor and indoor barbeques
and domestic heating purposes. It is also used as
Activated Carbon ideally suited for food processing,
medicine manufacturing and various industrial
purifications.
Major Markets:
USA, Netherlands, Italy, Russia, Turkey, UK
