Coco Chanel was a French fashion designer born in 1883. She was orphaned at a young age and spent six years in an orphanage where she learned to sew. She went on to open her first hat shop in 1909 with financing from her lover Étienne Balsan. Her career flourished and she opened her first boutique in Paris in 1910. Some of her most famous designs included the "little black dress" and introducing pants for women. However, she also faced controversy for her reported collaboration with German intelligence during World War II. Chanel died alone in her Paris apartment in 1971 at age 87.
