Coaching Log – Athlete Observation
Date 11/12/2014
Location Long room 183
Strengths The video footage that I observed was taken throughout the South East
tournament and therefore there was clips of different matches. This means
that I could observe Caroline’s play against different forms of defense and also
more experienced teams. I also stopped the video after every strength and
weakness shown to record what I saw.
Improvement
Areas
The actual footage was not a good quality, as the it would not zoom in close
enough to the action. But was good enough to see overall tactical awareness
and 1 on 1 tackles. I didn’t have the list of the 20 factors written down in front
of me, so was doing it from memory which would have impacted my analysis
skills.
Points for
future
discussion
During the athlete’s observation, I could ask Caroline to join me so that she
can observe her own performance and then complete the API/ASA. This
means that the results would be more accurate and therefore the
triangulation of data will be easier to establish strength and weaknesses.
Possible
actions arising
In the future, I will video the matches or training myself and then will be able
to focus the attention on Caroline. This will mean that my analysis will be
entirely on her and how she performs.
Coaching Log – Athlete Profiling
Meeting
Date 11/12/2014
Location Sport learning zone
Discussion
points
In the meeting, I asked Caroline to complete a API/ASA profile on herself. This
included a scale which ranged from foundation level to TDG standard. I arranged
the meeting so that Caroline had enough time to fill out the sheets to good quality
without rushing. This means that the result will truly reflect her opinions.
Concerns The location for the meeting was not the best option as a number of students
were out of class meaning I had to keep repeating the questions for Caroline to
hear. At first I relied too much on Caroline already understanding the API/ASA
from previous tasks.
Points for
future
discussion
From looking at the completed sheets and also her coaches and my assessment,
strengths and weaknesses will be highlighted. A training programme will then be
created.
Possible
actions
arising
A few minutes into the meeting, I realised that I needed to refresh Caroline’s
knowledge, and be clearer in my instructions. Therefore from now on, I will plan
the meeting so I know what should be said at which point of the meeting.
Coaching Log – Coach Profile Meeting
Date 11/12/2014
Location Room G40
Discussion
points
After contacting Mark during the week, we set up a meeting during one of his
lessons. After showing him the marking scales, he was able to score Caroline on
each of the 20 excellence traits.
Concerns The meeting was a bit rushed as other students wanted to have their coach profile
meeting as well. Although, as Mark has been coaching Caroline for a few months
now, I am sure his marking were an accurate reflection of Caroline as a player.
Points for
future
discussion
For future discussions, I would like to ask Mark the reasons in which Caroline was
scored low or high. This will secure my understanding of his opinions and also help
with the triangulation of the results.
Possible
actions
arising
Another location could be found to enable sufficient time with Mark to discuss
Caroline’s performance. Also, as other students wanted to speak with Mark,
organise a different time to meet so that the meeting wasn’t rushed.
